We present an effective deformable part model for face detection in the wild. Compared with previous systems on face detection, there are mainly three contributions. the first is an efficient method for calculating histogram of oriented gradients by pre-calculated lookup tables, which only has read and write memory operations and the feature pyramid can be calculated in real-time. the second is a Sparse Constrained Latent Bilinear Model to simultaneously learn the discriminative deformable part model, and reduce the feature dimension by sparse transformations for efficient inference. the third contribution is a deformable part based cascade, where every stage is a deformable part in the discriminatively learned model. By integrating the three techniques, we demonstrate noticeable improvements over previous state-of-the-art on FDDB with real-time speed, under widely comparisons with both academic and commercial detectors.

this paper introduces a method for spotted tongue recognition via cascade filtering. the original image is preprocessed and filtered through four characteristics of spot, respectively in position, color, gray and shape. then, every spotted region is marked with circle using above filter and is used to judge whether a tongue is spotted according to the number of detected spot regions. Experimental results in datasets collected by tongue acquisition system demonstrated that this method has a good performance in identifying both spotted tongue and non-spotted tongue.

A challenge in using myoelectric signals in control of motorised prostheses is achieving effective signal patternrecognition and robust classification of intended motions. In this paper, the performance of Matlab's Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP) backpropogation training algorithms in motion classification were assessed. the test and evaluation platform used was "BioPatRec", a Matlab-based open-source prosthetic control development environment, together with algorithms sourced from Matlab's neural network toolbox. the algorithms were used to interpret multielectrode myoelectric signals for motion classification, withthe aim of finding the best performing algorithm and network model. the results showed that Matlab's trainlm and trainrp algorithms could achieve a higher accuracy than other tested MLP training algorithms (94.13 +/- 0.037% and 91.09 +/- 0.047%, respectively). Discussion of these results investigates significant features to obtain the highest performance.

As the oscillatory brain activity varies with different individuals, the prior experience is not enough to select the optimal channels for patternrecognition. Most channel selections are based on amplitude features. In this paper, an approach for channel selection that combines amplitude and phase features is proposed. Applied to the data set IIb of BCI Competition 2003, the method for channel selection achieved an satisfying accuracy that only one letter was predicted as wrong among thirty-one letters.

A fingerprint orientation field has distinct characteristics which can differentiate fingerprints from any other flow patterns: it has a specific number of singular points (cores and deltas), the configuration of singular points follows a certain spatial distribution, and its global shape is like an arch. In this paper, we propose a global fingerprint orientation field model, represented in terms of ordinary differential equations, which does not require any prior information such as singular points or orientation of a fingerprint. Further, the model requires only a small number of polynomial terms to represent the global fingerprint orientation field. the coefficients of the model are found subject to the constraints on the total number of singular points (i. e., 0, 2, or 4) in a fingerprint. the proposed model is used to distinguish fingerprint images from non-fingerprint images and altered fingerprints by measuring the abnormality in the orientation field of the image.
