this study provides a description of the properties of the intramuscular electromyogram (imEMG) after targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) surgery, and a preliminary comparison of pattern recognition myoelectric prosthesis control between surface EMG (sEMG) and imEMG in TMR muscle. Fine wire imEMG and sEMG were simultaneously recorded from reinnervated sites in 5 subjects who had TMR surgery. Subjects trained a 7-motion-class linear discriminant classifier, and provided visually-guided ramped contractions to evaluate mean absolute value (MAV) as a measure for proportional velocity control. Characteristics of imEMG in TMR muscle varied with reinnervation site and the contractions' motion class. Signals with large, sparse motor units and signals resembling normal muscle were both observed. For each subject evaluated, use of imEMG provided no substantial change in classification error than when using sEMG signals. However, at TMR sites with large, sparse motor unit action potentials, the recruitment of such motor units may limit the controllability of mid-range speeds using MAV.

We propose a domain adaptation method for sequential decision-making process. While most of the state-of-the-art approaches focus on SVM detectors, we propose the domain adaptation method for the sequential detector similar to WaldBoost, which is suitable for real-time processing. the work is motivated by applications in surveillance, where detectors must be adapted to new observation conditions. We address the situation, where the new observation is related to the previous observation by a parametric transformation. We propose a learning procedure, which reveals the hidden transformation between the old and new data. the transformation essentially allows to transfer the knowledge from the old data to the new one. We show that our method can achieve a 60% speedup in the training w.r.t. the baseline WaldBoost algorithm while outperforming it in precision. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Individual identification in pigs is a key point for management. Many behaviors such as resting, activity, feeding and drinking are better to be monitored individually. the purpose of this work was to investigate feasibility of an automated method to identify marked pigs in a pen in experimental conditions and for behavior-related research by using image processing. First, ellipse fitting algorithms were employed to localize pigs. Second, individual pigs could be identified by their respective paint pattern using pattern recognition techniques. In total, pigs could be identified with an average accuracy of 89.4%. It was also shown that behaviors such as resting can be monitored using the presented technique. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Independent Component Analysis (ICA) is a promising tool for brain-computer interface (BCI). But most of ICA-based BCI researches only used batch ICA algorithm as the offline preprocessing step for EEG artifact removal and pattern enhancement. this paper explored a new approach of applying online ICA based on sliding window Infomax algorithm for BCI implementation. In addition to having good performance of blind source separation as traditional ICA, the proposed method has the characteristics that can synchronously realize the online envelope detection of multi-channel signals, which is that other methods do not have, such as Hilbert transform. then the online ICA is applied to the envelope detection of mu rhythm evoked by motor imagery and good classification results of imagining left and right hand movement are achieved on real-life data.

A new method for action modelling is proposed, which combines the trajectory beam obtained by semi-dense point tracking and a local binary trend description inspired from the Local Binary patterns (LBP). the semi dense trajectory approach represents a good trade-off between reliability and density of the motion field, whereas the LBP component allows to capture relevant elementary motion elements along each trajectory, which are encoded into mixed descriptors called Motion Trend patterns (MTP). the combination of those two fast operators allows a real-time, on line computation of the action descriptors, composed of space-time blockwise histograms of MTP values, which are classified using a fast SVM classifier. An encoding scheme is proposed and compared with the state-of-the-art through an evaluation performed on two academic action video datasets. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

We propose mutational genomics as an approach for identifying putative cancer pathways. this approach relies on expression profiling tumors that are induced by retroviral insertional mutagenesis. Akin to genetical genomics, this provides the opportunity to search for associations between tumor-initiating events (the viral insertion sites) and the consequent transcription changes, thus revealing putative regulatory interactions. An important advantage is that in mutational genomics the selective pressure exerted by the tumor growth is exploited to yield a relatively small number of loci that are likely to be causal for tumor formation. this is unlike genetical genomics which relies on the natural occurring genetic variation between samples to reveal the effects of a locus on gene expression. We performed mutational genomics using a set of 97 lymphoma from mice presenting with splenomegaly. this identified several known as well as novel interactions, including many known targets of Notch1 and Gfi1. In addition to direct one-to-one associations, many multilocus networks of association were found. this is indicative of the fact that a cell has many parallel possibilities in which it can reach a state of uncontrolled proliferation. One of the identified networks suggests that Zmiz1 functions upstream of Notch1. Taken together, our results illustrate the potential of mutational genomics as a powerful approach to dissect the regulatory pathways of cancer. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

In biology, similarity in structure or sequence between molecules is often used as evidence of functional similarity. In protein interaction networks, structural similarity of nodes (i.e., proteins) is often captured by comparing node signatures (vectors of topological properties of neighborhoods surrounding the nodes). In this paper, we ask how well such topological signatures predict protein function, using protein interaction networks of the organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae. To this end, we compare two node signatures from the literature - the graphlet degree vector and a signature based on the graph spectrum - and our own simple node signature based on basic topological properties. We find the connection between topology and protein function to be weak but statistically significant. Surprisingly, our node signature, despite its simplicity, performs on par with the other more sophisticated node signatures. In fact, we show that just two metrics, the link count and transitivity, are enough to classify protein function at a level on par with the other signatures suggesting that detailed topological characteristics are unlikely to aid in protein function prediction based on protein interaction networks. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a serious psychological disease that might be affiliated with abnormal resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) in default mode network (DMN) of brain. In this study it is aimed to discriminate patients with OCD from healthy individuals by employing pattern recognition methods on resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) data. For this purpose, two different feature extraction approaches were implemented. In the first approach the rs-FC fMRI data were subsampled and then the dimensionality of the subsampled data was reduced using subspace transforms. In the second approach, feature vectors having already low dimensions were obtained by measuring similarities of the rs-FC data of subjects to the separate means in OCD and healthy groups. Afterwards the healthy and OCD groups were classified using Support Vector Machine (SVM). In order to obtain more reliable performance results, the Double LOO-CV method that we proposed as a version of Leave-One-Out Cross Validation (LOO-CV) was used. Quite encouraging results are obtained when the features extracted using similarity measures are classified by SVM.

Transient biometrics, a new concept for biometric recognition, is introduced in this paper A traditional perspective of biometric recognition systems concentrates on biometric characteristics that are as constant as possible (such as the eye retina), giving accuracy over time hut at the same time resulting in resistance to their use for non-critical applications due to the possibility of misuse. In contrast, transient biometrics is based on biometric characteristics that do change over time aiming at increased acceptance in non-critical applications. We show that the fingernail is a transient biometric with a lifetime of approximately two months. Our evaluation datasets are available to the research community.
