We introduce DJ# - a language that can be used to program a Peer-to-Peer network using object-oriented techniques and Join methods. the object creation primitive of DJ# has two parameters, a class name and a peer name, allowing the programmer to create instances of any class on any node of the network. In the object-oriented programming spirit, DJ# objects can communicate by sending and receiving messages. As in Join Java or Polyphonic C#, both synchronous and asynchronous messages can be transmitted between distributed objects. the DJ# model provides a form of dynamic connectivity of interacting objects that can use Join methods to implement various communication mechanisms. the paper presents the design rationales and a formal operational semantics for DJ#.

this study designs and implements an embedded system-based distributed private cloud (EBDPC), which is a real-time analyzing device used in a wireless sensor network (WSN) monitoring system application. the proposed system consists of several low-cost embedded systems for the detection, classification, and measurement of six types of power quality events, including impulse, voltage sag, voltage swell, interruption, harmonics, and flicker. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) methods are used for automatic signal classification and characterization, and real-time notification for disturbance detection. A light-weighted load balance algorithm is also included in the proposed system for handling a great amount of data collected from electric sensors. the system has been successfully applied to detecting, classifying, and measuring disturbances in a power quality monitoring WSN.

the development of cloud technologies, miniaturization of computing and sensor devices has led to an explosive growth in the field of the Internet of things. One of the promising research areas within the framework of this concept is smart homes, and, more broadly, smart cities, associated with increasing the values of such parameters of housing and utility services as energy efficiency, resistance to failures, failing and efficiency in general. this article is devoted to the development of an information system for monitoring, remote management and maintenance of engineering systems at the housing infrastructure facilities. the functions of information system include the operational status control of engineering systems on housing infrastructure objects, support, maintenance, repair, prediction and alerts on routine, unplanned and critical situations. this system is based on the concept of "Dew computing - Fog computing - Cloud computing" and is designed to collect and process Big Data, collected via the Internet of things.

this paper proposes a remote monitoring and decision-making system for intelligent ships based on edge computing and distributed algorithms. Relying on the high bandwidth and low latency characteristics of 5 G communication, real-time data processing and remote monitoring of ship operation status are realized. the system localizes a large amount of sensor data through edge computing, and combines distributed algorithms to improve data fusion and decisionmaking efficiency. Data transmission supported by 5G communication provides technical guarantee for seamless connection between ships and shore-based monitoring centers. through real-time analysis of ship sensor data, the system can predict potential faults and optimize navigation strategies. Model simulation results show that the distributed algorithm based on edge computing has significant advantages in improving data processing speed, reducing decision response time by 15% and improving monitoring accuracy by 8.5%. this study provides technical support for remote monitoring and autonomous decision-making of intelligent ships, and verifies the broad application prospects of $\mathbf{5 G}$ communication in the field of maritime communications.

In distributed WiMAX Mesh Networks (DWMN), a joint solution with FEBA (Fair End-to-end Bandwidth Allocation) and DRR (Deficit Round Robin) can be used to achieve high end-to-end throughput fairness. Even then, the higher the number of hops a traffic flow traverses, the longer becomes the end-to-end delay of the traffic flow. this will result in serious unfairness of service quality among real-time traffic flows with different path length since they are delay-sensitive. In this paper, an improved fair scheduling mechanism based on the previous joint solution is proposed to deal with the above-mentioned problem by assigning a greater scheduling weight to the relayed traffic flows. Moreover, a new fairness index is defined to evaluate the service quality fairness of traffic flows. the proposed mechanism is compared with the previous joint solution by simulation. the results indicate that our proposed mechanism can provide better service quality fairness among real-time traffic flows without decreasing their throughput fairness. And it is also effective to improve the service quality fairness and throughput fairness of non-real-time traffic flows when the network is under a certain load.

Multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) technique is considered as one of the most promising wireless technologies that can significantly improve transmission capacity and reliability. Many emerging mobile wireless applications require peer-to-peer transmissions over an ad hoc network, where the nodes often have different number of antennas, and the channel condition and network topology vary over time. It is important and challenging to develop efficient schemes to distributively coordinate transmission resource sharing among a heterogeneous group of nodes over an infrastructure-free mobile ad hoc network. In this work, we propose a holistic distributed scheduling algorithm that can adaptively select different transmission strategies based on the node types and channel conditions to effectively relieve the bottleneck effect caused by nodes with smaller antenna arrays, and avoid transmission failure due to violation of channel constraint. the algorithm also takes advantage of channel information to opportunistically schedule cooperative spatial multiplexed transmissions between nodes and provide special transmission support for higher priority nodes with weak channels, so that the data rate of the network can be maximized while user transmission quality requirement is supported. the performance of our algorithm is studied through extensive simulations and the results demonstrate that our algorithm is very effective in handling node heterogeneity and channel constraint, and can significantly increase the throughput while reducing the transmission delay.

Live monitoring of athletes during sporting events can help maximise performance while preventing injury, and enable new applications such as referee-assist and enhanced television broadcast services. A major challenge is the extraction of athlete physiological data in real-time, since the radio range of body-worn sensor devices is limited, necessitating multi-hop routing mechanisms. However, little is known about the highly dynamic operating conditions on a soccer field under which communication protocols need to operate. In this work we conduct field experiments in which we outfit first-division soccer players with sensor devices and record their inter-connectivity during a real game. Our first contribution profiles the key properties of the dynamic wireless topologies arising in the soccer field, and highlights the consequences for routing mechanisms. We show that the topology is in general sparse, with short encounters and power-law distributed inter-encounters. Importantly, the co-ordinated movement of players in the field gives rise to significant correlations amongst links, an aspect that can potentially be exploited by routing. Our second contribution develops a model for generating synthetic topologies that mirror connectivity in a real soccer game, and can be used for simulation studies of routing mechanisms. Its novelty lies in explicitly modelling the underlying auto-correlation and cross-correlation properties of the links, from which derived measures such as inter-encounter times and neighbourhood distributions follow. Our study is an important first step towards understanding and modelling dynamic topologies associated with sports monitoring, and paves the way for the design of real-time routing algorithms for such environments.

In this paper, the use of a centralized server to assist cognitive radio users in accessing bands in licensed spectrums is proposed. Typical cognitive radios are opportunistic users of spectrum bands. therefore, they must scan the spectrum to detect existing users in order to avoid interference. the use of a centralized server can remove the need for spectrum scanning if all users inform the server about their presence. the server will coordinate and distribute channels to cognitive radio users using auctioning mechanisms. Our approach removes the need for cognitive radio users to spectrum scan. Scanning can be costly in terms of time and power consumption. In addition, collisions between users due to hidden node problem can be removed. the use of a centralized server allows for higher layer solution that would allow users of different wireless technologies to communicate. Due to its flexibility of use across different wireless networks, SIP is adopted as the communication protocol between the central server and the primary and secondary users of the licensed spectrum. Using a SIP server to coordinate channel allocation through auctioning approach can generate revenue for the incumbent network. Results show that revenue can be generated while still meeting the goal of efficient spectrum utilization.

this paper describes an architecture for real-time environmental modeling. It consists of a wireless mesh network equipped with sensors and a cloud-based infrastructure to perform real-time environmental simulations using a physics-based model combined with an Ensemble Kalman Filter. the purpose of the system is to optimize groundwater abstraction close to a river. these initial studies demonstrate that the cloud infrastructure can simultaneously compute a large number of simulations, thus allowing for the implementation of Ensemble Kalman Filters in real-time.

Mesh router (MR) placement is one of the fundamental issues that need to be addressed carefully to achieve a desired performance of a wireless mesh network (WMN). the objective of the MR placement schemes is to systematically determine the minimal number of MRs and their positions while satisfying various constraints, such as coverage, connectivity, traffic demand, etc. this paper explores the solution for placing the MRs with multiple transmission rates, which influence both transmission range and wireless link capacity. In the paper, we first formulate the problem with a mixed integer programming model. We then present a heuristic placement algorithm called ILSearch which takes into account both multiple transmission rates and co-channel interference. the ILSearch consists of two components: (1) Coverage MR determination which greedily exploits the capability of each selected MR to cover mesh clients (MCs); and (2) Relay MR determination that incrementally chooses the additional MRs for traffic relaying through the local search. Our simulation has not only shown that ILSearch can effectively obtain the MR placement that meets all the constraints, but also demonstrated that a MR placement which considers the variable transmission rates outperforms those don't.
