In this paper we consider a wireless sensor network (WSN) deployed to monitor a set of targets with known positions. Each target has an associated desired level of coverage by its neighbouring sensor nodes. the network deployment process introduces node placement uncertainty described by known probability distributions. Consequently, deficiency in achieving the desired coverage levels occurs with certain probabilities. To estimate such probabilities, we formalize a target coverage deficiency (TCD) problem. We show that the TCD problem is #P-hard even when restricted to grid WSNs. We then consider networks where node transmission ranges guarantee that the network after deployment has the same connectivity as the planned network. For such networks, we devise a dynamic programming algorithm that can solve a discrete version of the problem exactly and can produce lower bounds on the solution of any arbitrary given instance of the problem. We present simulation results that investigate the accuracy of the algorithm, and illustrate its usefulness in evaluating performance of any given node deployment scheme.

ieee 802.15.4 standard specifies a beacon-enabled mode which provides a synchronization environment using beacon transmissions. However, this mode is designed for single hop networks and its use in multi-hop networks is not straightforward. the main challenges of using beacon-enabled mode in multi-hop networks are how to efficiently schedule beacon transmissions to avoid direct and indirect beacon collisions and how to make a schedule tolerant to the clock drifts due to the low cost components. In this paper, we present TBoPS, a novel technique for scheduling beacons in the cluster tree topology. TBoPS uses a dedicated period called beacon only period (BOP) to schedule beacons at the beginning of ieee 802.15.4 superframe. the advantages of TBoPS is that every beacon-enabled node selects a beacon schedule distributively during association. We analysed the robustness of TBoPS to clock drifts. We also show through simulations that all nodes in the network are synchronized and follow the same superframe structure.

CNS: a new energy efficient transmission scheme for wireless sensor networks

We present in this paper a new energy-efficient communication scheme called CNS (Compression with Null Symbol) that combines the power of data compression and communication through silent symbol. the concept of communication through silent symbol is borrowed from the energy efficient schemes proposed in Sinha (Proceedings of 6th ieee consumer communications and networking conference (CCNC), Las Vegas, pp. 1-5, 2009), Ghosh et al. (Proceedings of 27th ieee international performance computing and communications conference (IPCCC), USA, pp. 85-92, 2008), and Sinha and Sinha (Proceedings of international conference on distributed computing and internet technologies (ICDCIT), LNCS, pp. 139-144, 2008). We show that the average theoretical energy saving at the transmitter by CNS is 62.5%, assuming an ideal channel and for equal likelihood of all possible binary strings of a given length. Next, we propose a transceiver design that uses a hybrid modulation scheme utilizing FSK and ASK so as to keep the cost/complexity of the radio devices low. Considering an additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and a non-coherent detection based receiver, CNS shows a saving in transmitter energy by 30% when compared to binary FSK, for equal likelihood of all possible binary strings of a given length. Simultaneously, there is a saving of 50% at the receiver for all types of data modulation due to halving of the transmitted data duration, compared to binary encoding. In contrast, RBNSiZeComm proposed in Sinha (Proceedings of 6th ieee consumer communications and networking conference (CCNC), Las Vegas, pp. 1-5, 2009), TSS proposed in Ghosh et al. (Proceedings of 27th ieee international performance computing and communications conference (IPCCC), USA, pp. 85-92, 2008) and RZE proposed in Sinha and Sinha (Proceedings of international conference on distributed computing and internet technologies (ICDCIT), LNCS, pp. 139-144, 2008) generate average transmitter energy savings of about 41, 20,

Resource allocation in Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) is certainly a challenging issue. WSNs are characterized by special features, like energy constraints and limited computing resources. Latest trends define that sensors should be able to provide Quality of Service (QoS) demanding data transmission. A modern approach in bandwidth sharing considers both the packet queue load as well as the traffic priority. A new QoS aware channel sharing approach is introduced, analyzing the effect of queue load in WSN Medium Access Control (MAC). the analysis reveals that the queue load factor has a great impact on QoS provision in bandwidth sharing, while packet priorities are also considered.

Although there are several works on providing event-based services in pervasive environment or WSN, most of them have not considered composite event detection in an energy-efficient fashion. Composite events consist of multiple primitive events with temporal and spatial relations and are much more difficult to manage. Because of the resource constraints in WSN, existing event detection algorithms may not be suitable for WSN when energy efficiency is considered. In this paper, we propose TED (Type-based composite Event Detection), a distributed composite event detection algorithm. the essential idea of TED is type-based event fusion, where some sensor nodes are selected as fusion points. then lower-level events will be fused on these fusion points for detection of higher-level composite events. Each composite event type is assigned to certain fusion point for detection so that the composite events may be detected in-network instead of at the sink. Event fusion with minimum energy cost is an NP-complete problem. We propose a distributed randomized algorithm to solve the problem. We analyze the energy efficiency of TED to show both its effectiveness and efficiency. By carrying out both simulation and real world experiments on TED, we show that TED can reduce the energy cost by 10-20% in event-based WSN applications compared with naive event detection mechanism where the event relations are not considered.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) often operate in severe surroundings and may suffer simultaneous failure of multiple nodes which gets the network partitioned into distinct segments. Restoring connectivity among these segments is crucial in order to prevent the negative effects on the application. this paper investigates effective approaches for recovering from the failure for scenarios where the distance between pairs of segments is longer than twice the communication range of a node and inter-segment quality of service (QoS) requirements have to be met. We model the deployment area as a grid. the optimization problem is then mapped to selecting the fewest cell count to populate relay nodes such that all segments are connected and their QoS requirements are fulfilled. Finding the optimal number and position of relay nodes with respect to length and QoS between segments is NP-hard and heuristics are thus pursued. We present a QoS-aware Relay node Placement (QRP) algorithm and validate the performance of QRP through extensive simulation experiments. ©Copyright 2010 ieee.

Achieving optimal actor resources usage is one of the fundamental issues in Wireless sensor and Actor Networks (WSANs). One solution is to maximize the mutually exclusive regions (i.e., regions covered by one actor). In this paper, we take a novel approach to define and resolve the mutual exclusion problem. We propose CRMEA, (Centralized Resource-based Mutual Exclusion Algorithm), that constructs an actor cover set whose cost is less than the sole mutual exclusion algorithm existing in the literature. In addition, extensions supporting dynamic acting range and mobility are added to CRMEA. Simulation results show that the proposed extensions can save up to 50%- 90% of actor resources when compared with CRMEA. In addition, the mobility extension can overcome the large event-to-action delay problem and meet the requirements of the delay-sensitive applications.

In this paper, we present a novel energy efficient routing protocol for wireless sensor networks in which the sensor nodes as well as the base station are mobile. the protocol is hierarchical and cluster based from network structure perspective. Each cluster contains one cluster head node and two deputy cluster head nodes. the re-clustering time and energy has been minimized by introducing the concept of cluster head panel. Some simulation results are shown which depict the energy efficiency and prolonged life time of the nodes under the influence of the proposed protocol. Future scope of the work is outlined.

We present the design, implement and evaluation of a sensing platform for on-line multi-target tracking based on acoustic array networks, named Integrated Acoustic Array sensor Network Tracker (IAASNT). To provide on-line multi-target tracking service, a well-designed system structure is proposed, composed by supporting components and associations between each part. Among these, IAASNT's multi-level low-power management and integrated tracking frame set it different from other related platforms. the integrated tracking frame is the core of the system and has been carefully designed, to achieve a self-acting tracking service. Finally, a series of experiments on system have been done to evaluate the performance of IAASNT. the tracking experiments on system show a perfect tracking performance in both noise-free and noisy environment, and the tracking precision can be within 5.8m in 300*300m area.

in this paper, Spatial Correlation-based distributed Compressed Sensing (SCDCS) model and algorithm are presented in Wireless sensor Networks (WSN), where spatial correlation and joint sparse models between the sensor nodes can be exploited in order to compress and reconstruct sensor observations in an energy efficient manner based on coding/decoding algorithm of SCDCS. Finally, the analysis of relationship between reconstruction error and compression ratio in SCDCS is carried out in simulation. Simulation results show that SCDCS can achieve acceptable estimation accuracy in an energy efficient way.
