distributed information management is particularly powerful in vehicular networks. For example, it enables vehicular communication systems to persistently provide up-to-the-minute information about accessible parking spaces, existing hazards or traffic densities and to keep these items up to date. the Vehicular Information Space framework (VIS) implements distributed information management. Vehicles running the VIS form a kind of distributed database. they are able to provide information items in a location-aware and fully distributed manner. Moreover, they can retrieve, modify and delete these items. For this purpose, the VIS divides the vehicular network into separate, interacting segments each running the VIS Structured P2P Algorithm (VSPA). this article focuses on the VSPA's design, implementation and evaluation. the algorithm is based on features derived from existing structured P2P algorithms and extended to suit the specific characteristics of vehicular networks. Simulation studies show that the VSPA overlay state maintains consistent given long-run simulations. On inconsistencies, the overlay stabilizes rapidly. this is evaluated using an urban traffic environment implying few messages for network adjustments. Also, it is examined on a motorway given high vehicular density and high data load to investigate scalability. Finally, we show that the VSPA is able to rebuild an overlay in case of a network breakdown.

Technological advancements in embedded systems due to Moore's law have lead to the proliferation of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in different application domains (e. g. defense, health care, surveillance systems) with different application requirements (e. g. lifetime, reliability). Many commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) sensor nodes can be specialized to meet these requirements using tunable parameters (e. g. voltage, frequency) to specialize the operating state. Since a sensor node's performance depends greatly on environmental stimuli, dynamic optimizations enable sensor nodes to automatically determine their operating state in-situ. However, dynamic optimization methodology development given a large design space and resource constraints (memory and computational) is a very challenging task. In this paper, we propose a lightweight dynamic optimization methodology that intelligently selects initial tunable parameter values to produce a high-quality initial operating state in one-shot for time-critical or highly constrained applications. Further operating state improvements are made using an efficient greedy exploration algorithm, achieving optimal or near-optimal operating states while exploring only 0.04% of the design space on average.

this study designs and implements an embedded system-based distributed private cloud (EBDPC), which is a real-time analyzing device used in a wireless sensor network (WSN) monitoring system application. the proposed system consists of several low cost embedded systems for the detection, classification, and measurement of six types of power quality events, including impulse, voltage sag, voltage swell, interruption, harmonics, and flicker. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) methods are used for automatic signal classification and characterization, and real-time notification for disturbance detection. A light-weighted load balance algorithm is also included in the proposed system for handling a great amount of data collected from electric sensors. the system has been successfully applied to detecting, classifying, and measuring disturbances in a power quality monitoring WSN.

Realizing energy efficient control strategies in the buildings is one of the innovative and challenging field of application for wireless sensor networks. To achieve the goal of reduced energy consumption and optimized use of energy in the buildings, the deployment of sensors and actuators is crucial. Simple affordable sensors can be used to monitor the power consumed by each appliance in the building in order to turn them on/off when it is efficient in the use of energy. the ARTEMIS Joint Undertaking project eDIANA (Embedded systems for Energy Efficient Buildings) funded by the European Commission aims to improve energy efficiency in buildings by using embedded technologies. In the eDIANA platform the energy consumed by household or office appliances is monitored by using ieee 802.15.4/Zigbee-compliant devices. the aim of the study is to show the feasibility of the ieee 802.15.4/Zigbee technology to the eDIANA application scenario and to provide guidelines for the network design. For this purpose two studies have been carried out: (i) a simulation analysis of a large apartment where many nodes are deployed;(ii) a real test-bed composed of ieee 802.15.4/ZigBee-compliant devices. In the first case performance, in terms of packet error rate, average delay and energy consumption, is evaluated by varying the number of nodes in different traffic conditions. In the second case, instead, the statistics of the delay is provided. the study shows that simulation results are in line with the results achieved through the measurements. Moreover results fulfil the eDIANA requirements.

Energy efficiency is of great importance in wireless sensor networks, where each node is typically powered by battery with limited energy supply. In this case, cooperative broadcasting plays a significant role in saving transmission power consumption by introducing the accumulation of signal energy and cooperative transmission. In this paper, we consider a clustered wireless sensor network (WSN) where a virtual MISO based energy-efficient broadcasting scheme is investigated with centralized and distributed algorithms. Specifically, sensors within each cluster relay message to nearby clusters via cooperative transmissions in conjunction with proper Space Time Block Codes (STBCs) till the entire network is connected. Further, to minimize the total transmission power, a centralized algorithm is presented with only one cluster head reached at each iteration. Also, to facilitate implementation, two distributed algorithms are introduced based on inter-cluster cooperative transmission with knowledge of intra-cluster channel state information (CSI). there performance analyses show that our scheme is more energy-efficient than other counterparts.

We study the optimal networked estimation of the Linear Time Invariant (LTI) systems with "Out-Of-Sequence" Measurements (OOSM) induced by random communication delays in this paper. Both available properties, which are off-line computation of filter's parameters for the LTI system and linear weighted combination for the Linear Minimum Mean Square Error (LMMSE) estimate, are fully used to present the weighted summation form of the Kalman filter (KF). Afterward, two novel delayed filters for different OOSM systems are proposed on the basis of the linear weighted summation filtering. Both have offline and online weighted coefficients and are optimal in the sense of LMMSE.

sensor coverage varies with location due to factors such as weather, terrain, and obstacles. If a field can be partitioned into zones of homogeneous sensing areas, then coverage by a random deployment of sensors can be optimized by controlling the number of sensors deployed in each zone. We derive expressions to directly calculate the optimal sensor partition in runtime asymptotically equal to the number of zones. We further derive expressions to determine the minimum sensor coma required to achieve a specific coverage threshold. We bound the maximum increase in coverage over a strategy oblivious to differences in sensing areas, which our results show is no greater than 13% for a field with two zones. While the analytical solutions assume that each zone is covered independently, we allow sensors to affect neighboring zones in simulations. Nevertheless, the simulations support the optimality of our solution.

this paper proposes a transmit power allocation scheme for distributed transmit antenna Alamouti space-time block coded (STBC) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems using Cholesky decision-feedback detection in the presence of multiple residual frequency offsets (RFOs). Multipath Rayleigh fading is considered, and separate power constraint on each transmit antenna is assumed. the lower bound on the average bit error ratio (BER) performance is derived, and the optimal power allocation scheme based on minimizing that bound is then proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed power allocation scheme in certain cases only consumes as little as 50-65% of the transmit power used by the full power allocation scheme while enhancing the BER performance.

In RFID systems, some readers will suffer from RF interference, which can lead to reader collision. Consequently, an anti-collision algorithm based on distributed power control (DPC) scheme was proposed as a solution for the problem in this paper. the proposed algorithm dynamically adjusts power output of a RFID reader based on the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) of RFID reader receiver, minimizes the reader collision ratio while maintaining a desired read range. the simulation results shown that the proposed algorithm reduces the collision ratio greatly while ensure overall coverage area of the RFID system.
