Current investment in crop monitoring consumes a large amount of financial cost, and how to reduce this cost has been a long-standing problem in agriculture. Traditional crop monitoring approaches are not cost-effective, because they rely on either heavy human labor or intensive computation with expensive instruments. In this paper, we explore the possibility of deploying networked sensor nodes for low-cost crop monitoring. As an example, we compute an important agricultural metric called global leaf area index (LA!) to illustrate the benefit of using sensor networks. We propose an approach called FOCUS that incrementally deploys sensor nodes into farmland to improve the accuracy of global LA! measurements. We design and implement a novel algorithm that calculates the total size of crop leaves with light intensity readings captured by the sensors under the crop canopies. FOCUS not only lowers the deployment cost considerably but also reduces the number of sensors for the long-term monitoring. through a small-scale field test and large-scale simulations, we validate our design and show its effectiveness in crop monitoring.

Rapid technological advances have enabled the development of wireless sensor networks for various monitoring tasks. Usually the involved applications are dependant on the location knowledge of the low-cost sensor nodes, the majority of which are non-beacon nodes whose positions are yet to be discovered. We present Argus, a light-weighted position estimation scheme for sensor networks, to address the problem of localizing non-beacon nodes, withthe location references obtained from a few beacon nodes whose positions are known apriori. We first determine certain geometric reference points and evaluate them with a voting procedure. then the position of a non-beacon node of concern is estimated withthe geometric centroid of the identified most valuable reference points. Simulation results show that even when a few of the available beacon nodes are malfunctioning, our scheme can tolerate those misleading location references, and still provide a dependable localization service.

Contour mapping is an important technique for Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) in environmental monitoring to abstract the information of a monitored field. State-of-the-art approaches for contour mapping, however, are neither energy-optimized, nor capable of handling heterogeneous user requests. In this paper, we develop a novel energy-efficient On-demand Active Contour Service (OACS) for power-constrained WSNs. OACS regresses the field intensity function with kernel Support Vector Regression (SVR), a novel machine learning tool that flexibly handles both contour line and contour map requests. OACS also adaptively accommodates a wide range of contour line/map precision requirements: (I) For applications of low precision, only a minimum set of nodes are scheduled in working mode while others are sleeping for conserving energy. (2) For applications of high precision, through an active and progressive learning algorithm, OACS determines the best set of nodes that should be turned on for improving the contour line/map precision. Evaluation based on diverse realistic models demonstrates that OACS provides quality and seamless contour services for various application requirements yet significantly conserves energy.

Deadlock detection is very difficult in a distributed database system because no controller has complete and current information about the system and data dependencies. the deadlock problem is intrinsic to a distributed database system which employs locking as its concurrency control algorithm. this paper attempts a comprehensive study of deadlock detection in distributed database systems. Afterwards, a deadlock detection algorithm is presented. the algorithm is based on creating Linear Transaction Structure (LTS), distributed Transaction Structure (DTS), finding local and global cycle, deciding priority Id of the transaction and local-global abortion. the proposed algorithm does not detect any false deadlock or exclude any really existing deadlocks. In this technique global deadlock is not dependent on the local deadlock.

For the rod shape measurement of hot rolled round steel bars (rods) the high frequency eddy current method is especially well suited as it requires no contact point and is not limited to bellow the Curie Temperature. Defects of the rod's shape can he detected by measuring the impedance spectrum of the RLC-oscillator. In the first laboratory setup [1] an Agilent Impedance Analyser was used for initial tests. Nevertheless, this setup cannot be applied in a steel plant due to the difficult environmental conditions. Hence, a Vector Network Analyser for passive impedance measurement that is applicable in these surroundings was developed.
