A primitive gas recognition system which can discriminate limited species of industrial gas was designed and simulated. the 'electronic nose' consists of an array of 8 micro-hotplate based SnO2 thin film gas sensors with different selectivity patterns, signal collecting unit and a signal pattern recognition and decision part in programmable logic device chip. BP (Back Propagation) neural networks with Multilayer Perceptron structure was designed and implemented on FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array), of twenty thousand gate level chip by VHDL language for processing the input signals from 8 kinds of gas sensors. the network contained eight input units, one hidden layer with 4 neurons and output with 5 regular neurons. the 'electronic nose' system successfully discriminated 5 kinds of industrial gases in computer simulation. A small application has been tested on the APS X208 FPGA test board.

the state of charge (SoC) of Li-ion coin batteries is investigated as a function of impedance variation. Batteries are submitted to highly stressed conditions to simulate the operation of active loads and impedance is measured in real time both for charge and discharge. In particular, modulus and phase dependence as a function of SoC is studied with impedance spectroscopy in the range 40 Hz to 20 kHz. Phase is found to be the most sensitive parameter. It decreases with battery discharge and increases with battery charge. Impedance is simply modelled with a 3 parameters circuit, two resistors and a constant phase element (CPE). Selected frequencies are then proposed to estimate the SoC of the battery.

Correlations among management metrics in software systems allow errors to be detected and their cause localized. Prior research shows that linear models can capture many of these correlations. However, our research shows that several factors may prevent linear models from accurately describing correlations, even if the underlying relationship is linear. Two common phenomena we have observed are relationships that evolve, typically with time and heterogeneous variance of the correlated metrics. Two-variable linear models proposed thus far fail to capture these phenomena., and thus fail to describe system dynamics correctly. Often, these phenomena are caused by a missing variable. However, searching for three-variable correlations is O(n(3)) for n metrics, which is costly for systems with many metrics. In this paper we address the above challenges by improving on two-variable Ordinary Least Squares regression models. We validate our models using a. realistic Java-Enterprise-Edition application. Using fault-injection experiments we show that our improved models capture system behavior accurately. We detect errors within 8 sample periods on average from the injection of the fault, which is less than half the time required by the current linear-model approach.
Several choices have to be made during the design process of active tag based systems. Since the number of properties that must be decided before production and wide-scale deployment is relatively high, the use of rea...

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have recently gained a great deal of attention as a topic of research, with a wide range of applications being explored. Bulk data dissemination is a basic building block for sensor network applications. the problem of designing efficient bulk data dissemination protocols has been addressed in a number of recent studies. the problem of mathematically analyzing the performance of these protocols, however, has not been addressed sufficiently in the literature. In this work, we show a way of analyzing mathematically the performance of bulk data dissemination protocols in WSNs. Our model can be applied to general networks by use of the shortest propagation path. Our model is accurate by considering topological information, impact of contention, and impact of pipelining. We validate the analytical results through detailed simulations, and we find the analytical results fit well withthe simulation results. Further, we demonstrate that the analytical results can be used to aid protocol design for performance optimizations, e.g., page size tuning for shortening the completion time.

Recently withthe emergence of mobile sensor networks, localization for such networks has gained much attention, and many localization algorithms have been proposed. Among them the Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) based algorithms are very popular because of their simplicity and efficiency. However, most current SMC-based localization algorithms implicitly assume there is no attacker in the network, which may not be true in real applications. the attackers, if any, may send false information by themselves or through compromised nodes to disturb the localization. In this paper, we present the design and evaluation of a Secure Monte Carlo Localization algorithm, SecMCL SecMCL provides authentication to messages and employs a new sampling method to defeat attacks. Simulation results show that SecMCL greatly improves the localization accuracy of existing SMC-based localization method when there are attacks. Also, compared with existing SMC localization method, SecMCL incurs no communication cost (in terms of number of messages) and achieves the same localization accuracy when there is no attack.

EcoPlex is an infrastructure that enables simple wireless platforms to participate seamlessly in a feature-rich, wireless ad hoc network. EcoPlex consists of gateways that are responsible for handoff support for mobility and high data rate without burdening the simple nodes to implement multi-hop protocols. the gateways also create virtual identities for simpler nodes to enable their participation in the feature-rich network without adding complexity to them. We demonstrate the feasibility of this idea withthe ultra-compact wireless sensor platform called Eco to participate as virtual nodes in a fully general ZigBee network. Experimental results show EcoPlex to be efficient and scalable. the enhanced mobility and interoperability are added to the Eco platform at the infrastructure level, all with minimal node complexity.
the paper shows a compact hard real-time operating system for wireless sensor nodes called PAVENET OS. PAVENET OS provides hybrid multithreading: preemptive multithreading and cooperative multithreading. Both of the m...

the performance demands imposed on sensor networks carrying heterogeneous connections are challenging and can be satisfied via the deployment of highly dynamic statistical multiplexing protocols which honor the traffic Quality Of Service (QOS), while utilizing the network resources efficiently. While the successful design of high-performance traffic multiplexing protocols requires accurate modeling of traffic statistical characteristics and QOS, variations in the latter characteristics, topological network changes (some due to mobility and short sensor life time), and /or failures in the response of network components affect directly, and frequently dramatically, their performance characteristics. It is thus crucial that traffic and network performance monitoring techniques be deployed, first for the identification of traffic changes and network failures, and then for the subsequent adaptation of the protocol operations, the pertinent recovery of failures, and the appropriate reconfiguration of network topologies. In this paper, we describe an approach to the design and deployment of a distributed performance monitoring system.
