Recently, mobility-assisted data collection has been proposed to prolong network lifetime. However, the upper bound of throughput capacity in such mobility-assisted data collection models has not been studied. In this work, we first derive the upper bound of throughput capacity when a mobile sink is available for data collection. Given the traveling speed of the mobile sink and the required delay deadline, we analyze the necessary conditions (e.g., optimal number of clusters, minimum buffer size at each cache, and minimum traveling distance) to achieve the Maximum throughput capacity. Our analysis shows that 3W/4n per-node throughput capacity can be achieved at a low traveling speed, which is 3 times of the throughput capacity in a static WSN. We further extend the analysis to the case where Multiple mobile devices can assist in data collection. We show that 4 mobile relays are enough to achieve the upper bound of throughput capacity, O(W/n). Finally, we derive the throughput capacity under existing mobility-assisted data collection models.

Many applications for irrigation management and environment monitoring exploit buried sensors wired-connected to the soil surface for information retrieval. Wireless Underground sensor Networks (WUSNs) is an emerging area of research that promises to provide communication capabilities to these sensors. To accomplish this, a reliable wireless underground communication channel is necessary, allowing the direct communication between the buried sensors without the help of art aboveground device. However, the significantly high attenuation caused by soil is the main challenge for the feasibility of WUSNs. Recent theoretical results highlight the potential of smaller attenuation rates with the use of smaller radio frequencies. In this work, experimental measurements are presented at the frequency of 433MHz, which show a good agreement with the theoretical studies. We observe that (a) a decrease of the frequency of the wireless signal implies a smaller soil attenuation rate, (b) the wireless underground communication channel presents a high level of temporal stability, and (c) the volumetric water content (VWC) of the soil is the most important factor to adversely affect the communication. the results show the potential feasibility of the WUSNs with the use of powerful RF transceivers at smaller frequencies (e.g., 300-500MHz band). We also propose a classification for wireless underground communication, defining and showing the differences between Subsoil and Topsoil WUSNs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that reports experiment results for underground to underground communication using commodity sensor motes.

this paper describes the prototype implementation of a pervasive, wearable augmented reality (AR) system based on a full body-motion-capture system using low-power wireless sensors. the system uses body motion to visualize and interact with virtual objects populating AR settings. Body motion is used to implement a whole body gesture-driven interface to manipulate the virtual objects. Gestures are mapped to correspondent behaviors for virtual objects, such as controlling the playback and volume of virtual audio players or displaying a virtual object's metadata. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology is fast becoming an important tool for tracking commodities in supply chain management applications. the movement of commodities through the supply chain forms a gigantic workflow that can be mined for the discovery of moving trends that in turn can be valuable in understanding and optimizing business processes. there have been some methods dealing with mining frequency paths in single site. But the path data collected by RFID systems are usually distributed in different sites. the current mining methods are not created for mining frequency paths in distributed systems. In this paper, we propose a method called FDMFP to mine frequency paths in distributed RFID systems. the method uses current frequency paths mining algorithm to mine local frequency paths in each site, then save the results in path lexicographic trees. the sites send these trees to polling sites, and polling sites merge these trees. After first pruning, there will be semi global frequency paths in polling sites. then by collecting true support from each site, the polling sites will update true support for these paths and by second pruning, method will find global frequency paths. the experiments in this paper show that it outperforms using frequency paths mining algorithm after centralizing data in center site obviously and scales over LAN with huge amount of data. © 2009 ieee.

the management of broadcast-key is one of the most important security problems in the distributed wireless sensor networks. Firstly, the broadcast-key should be calculated and used by each node. Secondly, the broadcast-key should also be updated according to the variation of security condition. In this paper, we propose a new broadcast-key management scheme which has many advantages over the famous muTESLA protocol. the analysis in this paper demonstrates its feasibility, efficiency and security for broadcast-key establishment and renewing in distributed wireless sensor networks.

In the network layer of wireless sensor network (WSN), how to design a kind of routing protocol that could prolong the lifetime of network, enhance the connections among nodes and reduce energy dissipation is one of the main hot spots in WSN. this paper proposes a new type of routing protocol for WSN called PECRP (Power-efficient Clustering Routing Protocol), which is suitable to long-distance and complex data transmission (e.g. patient-surveillance or chemical detection in agriculture), and for fixed sensor nodes of WSN. PECRP combines the advantages of some excellent cluster-based routing protocols together, such as HEED (Hybrid Energy-efficient distributed Clustering Approach), PEGASIS (Power-Efficient Gathering in sensor Information systems) and so on. PECRP improves the mechanism in electing CHs (cluster heads) of LEACH, and elects more appropriate nodes to be CHs, which could prolong the lifetime of WSN obviously. In data transmission, PECRP uses multi-hop transmission that is called "circle domino offect based on distance to BS (Base Station)" to balance the energy consumption in nodes. this paper proves the rationality that multi-hop transmission can prolong the lifetime of WSN in narrow sense situation based on mathematical proofs. the simulations show that PECRP has better performances than LEACH in prolonging lifetime and transmitting data in the symmetrical distribution of nodes in WSN. ©2009 ieee.

Over the last few years, Pervasive computing has become a very active research topic in both academia and industry. In spite of its undeniable benefit, until recently, the wide deployment of pervasive information system is still limited due to high cost of infrastructure, and more important, its requirement of rebuilding a new information infrastructure from scratch without reusing much from the current working system. In this study, we propose BKCAS (BK Context-Aware System), a novel architecture for scalable pervasive information system having the capability of intelligently routing multimedia messages to users based on context processing. Moreover, BKCAS support user roaming over a large number of loosely-coupled autonomous domains. Differ from many other pervasive systems, which assume a completely newly-built infrastructure, our approach focuses on reusing the most of current infrastructure, and incrementally extend the system the most non-intrusive way in order to minimized deployment cost and improve user acceptance. Furthermore, we successfully prototype the system and evaluate its performance by an automated testbed. © ICITA 2009.

Recent study reveals that great benefit can be achieved for data gathering in wireless sensor networks by employing mobile collectors that gather the data via short-range communications. To pursue maximum energy saving at sensor nodes, intuitively, a mobile collector should traverse the transmission range of each sensor in the field such that the transmission of each packet can be constrained to a single hop. However, this approach may lead to significantly increased data collection latency due to the low moving velocity of the mobile collector. On the other hand, data collection latency can be effectively shortened by performing local aggregation via multi-hop transmissions and then uploading the packets from relay sensors to the mobile collector. However, local transmission hops should not be arbitrarily increased since it may incur too much energy consumption on packet relays, which would adversely affect the overall efficiency of mobile data collection. Based on these observations, in this paper, we study the tradeoff between energy saving and data collection latency in mobile data gathering by exploring a balance between the relay hop count of local data aggregation and the moving tour length of the mobile collector. We first propose a polling-based mobile collection approach and formulate it into an optimization problem, named bounded relay hop mobile data collection (BRH-MDC). Specifically, a subset of sensors will be selected as polling points that buffer locally aggregated data and upload the data to the mobile collector when it arrives. In the meanwhile, when sensors are affiliated with these polling points, it is guaranteed that any packet relay is bounded within a given number of hops. We then give two efficient algorithms to select polling points among sensors. the effectiveness of our approach is validated through extensive simulations.

the exponential growth in wireless services has resulted in an overly crowded spectrum. the current state of spectrum allocation indicates that almost all usable frequencies have already been occupied. this makes one pessimistic about the feasibility of integrating emerging wireless services such as large-scale sensor networks into the existing communication infrastructure. Cognitive Radio is the emerging dynamic spectrum access technology to achieve open spectrum sharing flexibly and efficiently. It is an intelligent wireless communication system that is aware of its radio environment and is capable of adapting its operation to statistical variations of the radio frequency. Ad-hoc networks in terms of cognitive radio rely on a common control channel (CCC) for operation. Control signals are used to enable cooperation communicate through a common control channel. However, common control channel may not be always available in an open spectrum allocation scheme due to interference and coexistence with primary systems (PS) of the spectrum. In this paper, we propose a novel common control channel selection protocol (DCP-CCC) in a distributed way based on appearance patterns of PS and connectivity among nodes. Using simulation results, we evaluate the performance of the proposed CCC selection scheme.

this paper deals with a supporting system for elderly people while walking in the streets. One motivation behind this study is preventing them from unexpected accidents due to ill conditions of the street surface. Since camera devices cannot sense the street surface in the absence of sufficient light, we utilize a mechanical input. We propose an intelligent stick, called Proving Stick, using a 3D accelerometer sensor. Probing Stick consists of a stick with an accelerometer and a wearable computer, both of which are wirelessly connected. It notifies a user of the level of danger at the street surface as an alert. this short paper describes its basic architecture, signal processing, and results of preliminary experiments. ©2009 ieee.
