In this paper we deal with biomedical applications of wireless sensor networks, and propose a new quality of service (QoS) routing protocol. the protocol design relies on traffic diversity of these applications and ensures a differentiation routing using QoS metrics. It is based on modular and scalable approach, where the protocol operates in a distributed, localized, computation and memory efficient way. the data traffic is classified into several categories according to the required QoS metrics, where different routing metrics and techniques are accordingly suggested for each category. the protocol attempts for each packet to fulfill the required QoS metrics in a power-aware way, by locally selecting the best candidate. It employs memory and computation efficient estimators, and uses a multi-sink single-path approach to increase reliability. the main contribution of this paper is data traffic based QoS with regard to all the considered QoS metrics. To our best knowledge, this protocol is the first that makes use of the diversity in the data traffic while considering latency, reliability, residual energy in the sensor nodes, and transmission power between sensor nodes as QoS metrics of the multi-objective problem. the proposed algorithm can operate with any MA C protocol, provided that it employs an ACK mechanism. Performance evaluation through a simulation study, comparing the new protocol with state-of-the QoS and localized protocols, show that it outperforms all the compared protocols.

We have developed a wearable sensor node with a low power and high detection rate by using sequential control of multiple infrared (IR) modules. Conventional sensor nodes are not practical in terms of size, sensing performance, and working hours. therefore, we devised a name-tag-size (73 x 98 x 9 mm) sensor node, which captures face-to-face interactions within 2 meters and within an angle of 60°. the sensor node weighs 62 grams and works for more than twenty hours with a small 5-gram Li-ion battery. the sensor uses the beam-scan technique, in which four infrared modules, placed horizontally on the node, are controlled to be on and off sequentially, and this operation is done synchronously with other nodes. the beam-scan technique enables low-power operation with a consumption current of 7.2 mA and 21 hours of operation. We had tested the sensor node in a field trial that collected sensor data for six months from 20 people and had demonstrated that this technique is practical. Feedback from sensing data reminded us of the importance of meeting frequency and this improved our work habits. ©2009 ieee.

Mobility is one of the most important issues in the next generation of Wireless sensor Networks. In the future internet oriented to internet-ofthings and awareness context solutions is essential to support mobility and global addressing. Furthermore, in medical environments it is crucial to support fault tolerance, since human life depends on these systems. this paper presents an architecture to support medical sensor networks based on 6L0WPAN, where we have defined a protocol to carry out inter-WSN mobility. this protocol shows how we exploit the other elements of the architecture (sink nodes and gateways) with high capacity and resources, hence mobile nodes decrease the number of interchanged messages it needs with regard to other solutions for mobility like MIPv6. Moreover, from this mobility protocol we can support fault tolerance too, considering that a node fails it is a special case of mobility. All this with a suitable security support, therefore we can assure the protection of the patient's information. © 2009 ieee.

the emergence of novel sensing devices and wireless sensor network technologies provides a whole new opportunity for global environmental studies and environment-related decision making. the Swiss Experiment is a newly initiated multidisciplinary project aimed at building a large scale platform, to support field investigations of environmental processes, which is based on new sensor and data management technology. In this talk we will first give an overview of the environmental problems being addressed in the Swiss Experiment and identify opportunities of supporting environmental scientists by recent advances in communications and information systems. We will discuss in particular our approach to support data and information management throughout experimental campaigns. this includes support for distributed data stream management based on Global sensor Networks, for data warehousing and analysis, for map-based visualizations based on sensorMap and for information sharing using a WIKI-based and semantics-enabled platform. We will demonstrate our initial results and identify some future challenges towards developing a truly comprehensive information management support for environmental sciences. Copyright 2009 ACM.

Modern navies face the introduction of,new ships with reduced and less trained manning and new, more complex, sensor systems. these trends could result in operator overload which might be solved by introducing a higher level of automation. In case of classification, a sub process of picture compilation, the problem, of conflicting sensor data can be solved by proportional redistribution of conflict according to the PCR6 algorithm. this method is computationally demanding to such an extend that the applicability is limited in practice. the methodology in this paper adapts the PCR6 algorithm by simplification of the solution space of the algorithm by preprocessing the input data. Comparison tests show that this simplification reduces computing time by at least a factor hundred while the effects on the output are limited. We conclude that by applying preprocessing the PCR6 algorithm can be applied in real time classifications systems using common computer hardware.

We present a holistic dynamic linking and loading mechanism in networked embedded systems. Our design and implementation are guided by four requirements, which are to provide (i) minimal code size (ii) efficient execution and loading speed (iii) portable design (iv) isolated kernel/application development. First, we develop a tool to minimize the standard ELF format via many techniques in order to reduce the code dissemination cost. Second, we employ the techniques of pre-relocating and pre-linking (to kernel functions) to reduce the run-time linking overhead, thus improving the loading speed. third, based on relocatable ELF and the modular design of the dynamic linker and loader, our approach can be easily ported to different platforms. Fourth, by maintaining a kernel jump table, we provide a clean isolation between kernel and application development. We have implemented the dynamic linking and loading mechanism on SenSpire OS, a micro sensor node operating system. the evaluation results show that our design and implementation meet our design goals: the code size of our SELF format is only 15%-30% of that of standard ELF, 38%-83% of that of CELF, a compact ELF format for the Contiki operating system;the loading speed improvement varies from 40%-50% compared to the standard mechanism;our design is portable to both MicaZ and TelosB motes, and we allow updating both application modules and kernel services in isolation without prior knowledge about the whole system information.

At present, odor sensors and anemometers are simply used by most chemical plume tracing algorithms to measure the concentration and wind speed/direction, respectively. To make full use of the information of concentration and wind for chemical plume tracing, the concept of virtual odor-source-probability sensor (VOSPS) is put forward. the VOSPS adopts the data of odor sensor and anemometer as input and outputs local odor source probability distribution through Bayesian estimation and fuzzy inference. the global odor source probability distribution is constructed by the method of log odds-ratio. the expectation of odor source probability distribution is used to express the fitness function of the PSO algorithm which is used to coordinate the multi-robot system. To validate the tracing strategy, the plume model corresponding to the actual boundary condition of an indoor ventilated environment is set up. Considering the slow response and recovery time of most real odor sensors, a second-order sensor model is built. Simulation results demonstrate that, compared with the existing PSO based plume tracing algorithms, the proposed algorithm has quick search speed and high success rate. © 2009 ieee.

Delay Tolerant Wireless sensor Networks (DTWSNs) are sensor networks where continuous connectivity between the sensor nodes and their final destinations (e.g., the base station) cannot be guaranteed. Storage constraints are particularly a concern in DTWSNs, since each node may have to store sensed data for a long period of time due to intermittent communication while continuously collecting data. In this paper, we develop novel techniques to seamlessly authenticate and compress sensed data, addressing the storage concerns in DTWSNs in hostile environments by harnessing both temporal and spatial correlation among sensed data. By appropriately using Message Authentication Code (MAC) and one-way hash functions, our techniques allow a node (including intermediate, non-source nodes) to efficiently compress sensed data without regenerating MACs. We explore the trade-off between data distortion and storage reduction provided by compression so that we can reach the maximum data reduction while maintaining desired data quality. ©2009 ieee.

the functionality of interdigitated gold/aluminum electrodes on PdO films for water vapor (WV) sensing was studied. the characterization of the structure Au/Al/PdO/Al/Au was done at different temperatures introducing WV pulses in the test chamber under a continuous flow of N-2 to produce the desired moisture conditions. PdO films were obtained by thermal oxidation of Pd films at 650 degrees C in air atmosphere. the Pd films were deposited by the electroless process on Silicon (Si) substrates. the development of Pd/Si structures is important because it can be integrated with the microelectronic technology. Nanometric and micrometric thickness PdO films were studied. the electrical conduction limiting mechanisms of the Pd and PdO films were also determined. the response time, recovery time, and the sensitivity of structures was characterized in controlled humidity conditions. It was found that the response characteristics depend on the initial humidity condition of the PdO surface. When the structures were stored in environmental conditions the best operating parameters were observed. In contrast, when the structures were stored in dry atmosphere, the response resulted unstable with variations in the signal during extended measurement periods.

In this paper, we implement the Central Optical sensor Measurement/Observation System, named COSMOS, with the integrated FBG sensor control device. the COSMOS is a kind of the central management system of FBG sensors. through this system, all of the sensing information received from widely distributed FBG sensors is managed in central office without any additional expense. Moreover, since the received data is stored into a web-server or a database, we can monitor the specific area and process the monitored data to get results. An integrated FBG sensor control device with the network interface is also designed and implemented. this control device supports 0.5 pm resolution, 3 pm wavelength accuracy and 200 Hz measurement frequency. Since the network device is equipped, the collected data to control device is transmitted to COSMOS. Finally, we show the experimental results of the integrated FBG sensor device and COSMOS.
