sensor networks are wireless networks with peculiar properties that require specific attention to be properly managed if their performance and dependability have to be taken care of. In fact, both the usually hard environmental conditions where sensors are deployed and the scarcity of node resources determine overall critical working conditions that dramatically impact on parameters such as reliability, fault tolerance, power consumption and scalability. Currently available routing protocols hardly meet all these constraints, because they are not designed in a strong distributed fashion. Swarm intelligence is a science that studies the behavior of social insects characterized by distributed elaboration features, simple computational capacity, flexibility and robustness. In this paper, we propose a routing algorithm based on swarm intelligence, named pheromone protocol (PH-protocol), with some interesting features such as self organization, fault tolerance and environmental adaptation capabilities. To highlight these properties we compared our algorithm against the directed diffusion one, a well known sensor network routing protocol, and measured their performances in terms of reliability, fault tolerance, power consumption and scalability. the obtained results demonstrate that sensor networks greatly benefit from the distributed nature of our PH-protocol, which ensures interesting performance and reliability features.

A reuse oriented perspective is taken to designing and implementing configurable distributed applications. An application domain is defined as a family of systems that have some features in common and others that differentiate them. During domain modeling, reusable specifications, architectures and component types are developed, which capture the similarities and variations of the family of systems that compose the application domain. Target systems are generated by tailoring the reusable specifications and architectures given the requirements of the target system, and configuring a target system based on the tailored architecture. the paper describes an approach for generating and configuring distributed applications from the domain model and a library of predefined component types.

In this work, we consider the presence of dumb nodes in the underlying physical networks of sensor-Cloud infrastructure. the dumb nodes get isolated from the network and degrade the network performance. Consequently, a Cloud Service Provider (CSP) is unable to use Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) in an efficient manner, as the dumb sensor nodes cannot use as a virtual sensor. thus, in this work, we propose a scheme, Connectivity Re-establishment in the Presence of Dumb Nodes in sensor-Cloud Infrastructure (CoRDS), that facilitates the reestablishment of the connectivity between dumb nodes and the sink. Using the proposed scheme, CoRDS, the CSP is able to provide the services efficiently as per end-users requirements. In order to re-establish connectivity between the dumb nodes and the sink, we use a single leader multiple follower Stackelberg game. Additionally, theoretical characterization of CoRDS has been shown.

this paper considers the problem of power-efficient distributed estimation of vector parameters related to localized phenomena so that both the subset of sensor selection and the routing structure in a wireless sensor network are optimized jointly in order to obtain the best possible estimation performance at a given querying node, for a given total power budget. We first formulate our problem as an optimization problem and show that it is NP-Hard. then, we design two algorithms: a fixed-tree relaxation-based and a novel and very efficient local distributed optimization to optimize jointly the sensor selection and the routing structure. We also provide a lower bound for our optimization problem and show that our local distributed optimization algorithm provides a performance that is close to this bound. Although there is no guarantee that the gap between this lower bound and the optimal solution of the main problem is always small, our numerical experiments support that this gap is actually very small in many cases. An important result from our work is that because of the interplay between the communication cost over the links and the gains in estimation accuracy obtained by choosing certain sensors, the traditional shortest-path-tree routing structure, widely used in practice, is no longer optimal, that is, our routing structures provide a better trade-off between the overall power efficiency and the final estimation accuracy obtained at the querying node. Comparing to more conventional sensor selection and fixed routing algorithms, our proposed joint sensor selection and routing algorithms yields a significant amount of energy saving.

In this paper, the basic concept, working principle, characteristics and structure, data fusion method and application range of multi-sensor information fusion are described in detail. In this paper, a new multi-sensor information fusion method is established and verified by experiments. Meanwhile, a multi-source data fusion algorithm based on single D-S evidence is proposed. the upper computer software (GUI) developed in Python allows these sensors to work together. the sensor can also store data based on time stamps. the superiority of this algorithm is proved by computer simulation.

Random walk is one of the widely used techniques for information discovery in unstructured networks like ad hoc wireless networks (AWNs) and wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In a random walk, instead of taking all steps uniform randomly, our idea is to modify random walk to take some level biased steps to improve its energy efficiency and latency which are important design parameters in WSNs. the level of a node is defined as the minimum number of hops required for a packet to reach the sink node from that node. We propose two walk based search protocols viz., several short random walks (SSRW) search and random walk with level biased jumps (RWLBJ) search, that use a combination of uniform random and level biased steps for energy efficient search in WSNs. the idea is that the biased steps in the proposed protocols decrease the correlation among visited sensor nodes which increases the node coverage of the protocols. We show by theoretical analysis that using biased steps in random walks increases their efficiency in terms of energy consumption and latency of search. We also show by extensive simulations that SSRW and RWLBJ are better choices compared to that of pure random walk in terms of the energy consumption and latency of search.

this paper proposes an advanced sliding mode-based control strategy for stable voltage and frequency control of inverter-based distributed energy resources. the proposed controller monitors and stabilizes the system voltage and frequency and protects the DER from external faults. Especially, the system stability is proven using the Lyapunov Function. the time-domain simulation results obtained using PSCAD/EMTDC for different load configurations authenticate the method's performance. Further, the results are compared with that of a PI-based feed-forward compensation control strategy, which further validates the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

Localization is a crucial service for various applications in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Although most researches assume stationary nodes, sensor mobility can enrich the application scenarios. Existing dynamic localization approaches require high seed density or incur a large communication overhead. In order to address these problems, we propose an efficient rang-free localization algorithm, EUL, which utilizes the relationship between neighboring nodes to estimate their possible location boundaries. Our algorithm not only allows all the nodes to remain static or move freely but also reduces the dependence on seeds, which achieves a uniform energy distribution to address the excessive energy drain around seeds and lengthen the network lifetime. We have evaluated EUL together with other major dynamic localization approaches. Simulation results show that EUL outperforms existing approaches in terms of accuracy under many different mobility conditions.

A proxy signature scheme allows an entity to delegate his/her signing capability to another entity in such a way that the latter can sign messages on behalf of the former. Such schemes have been suggested for use in a number of applications, particularly in distributed computing where delegation of rights is quite common. Followed by the first schemes introduced by Mambo, Usuda and Okamoto in 1996, a number of new schemes and improvements have been proposed. In this paper, we present a security analysis of four such schemes newly proposed in [14, 15]. By successfully identifying several interesting forgery attacks, we show that these four schemes all are insecure. Consequently, the fully distributed proxy scheme in [11] is also insecure since it is based on the (insecure) LKK scheme [13, 14]. In addition, we point out the reasons why the security proofs provided in [14] are invalid. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

High availability is a desired feature of a dependable distributed system. Replication is a well-known technique to achieve fault tolerance in distributed systems, thereby enhancing availability. We propose an approach relying on replication techniques and based on monitoring information to be applied in distributed systems for fault tolerance. Our approach uses both active and passive strategies to implement an optimistic replication protocol. Using a proxy to handle service calls and relying on service replication strategies, we effectively deal with the complexity and overhead issues. this paper presents an architecture for implementing the proxy based on monitoring data and the replication management. Experimentation and application testing using an implementation of the architecture is presented. the architecture is demonstrated to be a viable technique for increasing dependability in distributed systems.
