For distributed real-time systems, adequate profiling tools are exceedingly rare. the sheer variety and low-level nature of these systems impede the adoption of standard, general-purpose tools for performance analysis and visualization. Although much research has been devoted to profiling parallel clusters and supercomputers, the literature virtually ignores the real-time domain. Correspondingly, a handful of commercial tools is available for profiling realtime software, but they invariably make a single-node assumption and are unable to cope with distributed environments. We examine the state of performance analysis and discuss why profilers are conspicuously absent in the field of distributed real-time systems. We then explore how developers of these systems could benefit from graphical profiling tools with automatic instrumentation and data collection. Toward that end, we demonstrate the prototype of a performance visualization tool called "Bacara," the second addition to our suite of tools for Visual Analysis of distributed real-time systems, or VADR (va'dar).

An open distributed control system (DCS), which consists of many devices and an open network interconnecting them, is now used in many automation areas. For assuring the control performance under the heavy traffic on the network, the simulation of a DCS is strongly needed. For this purpose, we propose an object-oriented design pattern approach as a uniform, efficient and accurate method of modeling and simulating a DCS. Four design patterns are newly proposed. Device-Constructor and Composite-Device-Constructor patterns describe classes and mechanisms for uniformly structuring device models composed of many kinds of sensors and actuators. Statechart pattern defines classes and the state-transition execution mechanism for realizing the behavior of sensors and actuators in a device. While Event-Chain pattern defines classes and the event dispatching mechanism among sensors and actuators intra-device and inter-device. the systematic implementation procedures from these patterns to the executable Java code of the DCS simulation model are also discussed. Finally, the effectiveness of our approach was proved by developing the Java-based DCS modeler and simulator used in building automation area.

Instrumentation is a critical part of evaluating an enterprise distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) system's performance. Traditional techniques for instrumenting enterprise DRE systems require DRE system developers to make design decisions regarding what metrics to collect during early phases of the software lifecycle so these needs can be factored into the system architecture. In many circumstances, however, it is hard for DRE system developers to know this information during early phases of the software lifecycle-especially when metrics come from many heterogeneous sources (such as application-and system-level hardware and software resources) and evaluating performance is traditionally an after-thought. To address these issues, this article presents the design and performance of OASIS, which is SOA-based middleware and tools that dynamically instruments enterprise DRE system without requiring design-time knowledge of which metrics to collect. this article also empirically evaluates OASIS in the context of a representative enterprise DRE system case study from the domain of shipboard computing. Results from applying OASIS to this case study show that its flexibility enables DRE system testers to precisely control instrumentation overhead. We also highlight open challenges in dynamic instrumentation for next-generation enterprise DRE systems.

We present an architectural framework that provides the foundation for building smart object systems and uses a document centric approach utilizing a profile based artefact framework and a task based application framework. Our artefact framework represents an instrumented physical smart objects as a collection of service profiles and expresses these services in generic documents. Applications for smart objects are expressed as a collection of functional tasks (independent of the implementation.) in a corresponding document. A runtime component provides the foundation for mapping these tasks to the corresponding service provider smart objects. there are three primary advantages of our approach- firstly, it allows developers to write applications in a generic way without prior knowledge of the smart objects that could be used by the applications. Secondly;smart object management (locating/accessing/etc.) issues are completely handled by the infrastructure thus application development becomes rapid and simple. Finally;the programming abstraction used in the framework allows extension of functionalities of smart objects and applications very easily. We describe an. implemented prototype of our framework and show examples of its use in a real life scenario to illustrate its feasibility.

Almost a year ago, Microsoft has introduced the .NET architecture as a new component-based programming environment, which allows for easy integration of classical distributed programming techniques with Web computing. NET defines a type system and introduces notions such as component, object, and interface, which are building blocks for distributed multi-language component-based applications. As many other component frameworks, NET mainly focuses on functional interfaces of components. Nonfunctional aspects of components, such as resource usage (CPU, memory), timing behavior, fault-tolerance, or security requirements are currently not expressed in NET's component interfaces. Within this paper, we discuss the usage of aspect-oriented programming techniques in context of the NET framework. We focus on the fault-tolerance aspect and discuss the expression of non-functional component properties (aspects) as C# custom attributes. Our approach uses reflection to generate replicated objects based on settings of a special "fault-tolerance" attribute for C# components(perpendicular to). We have implemented an aspect-weaver for integration of aspect-code and component-code, which uses the mechanisms of the language-neutral NET type system. therefore, our approach is not restricted to the C# language but works for an), of the NET programming languages.

Heterogeneous non-functional requirements of DRE system puts a limit on middleware engineering;building an application-tailored middleware becomes a challenge. In this paper, we show how we use the PolyORB middleware and its architecture as a framework to implement DDS, the Data Distribution Services (DDS) recently published by the OMG. We demonstrate how the architectuer proposed by PolyORB enables a rapid implementation of this specification, and allows for extreme tailorability to support application requirements.

We consider the problem of recovering from failures of distributable threads in distributed real-time systems that operate tinder run-time uncertainties including those on thread execution times, thread arrivals, and node failure occurrences. When a thread encounters a node failure, it causes orphans. Under a termination model, the orphans must be detected and aborted, and exceptions must be delivered to farthest, contiguous surviving thread segment for resuming thread execution. Our application/scheduling model includes distributable threads and their exception handlers that are subject to time/utility function (TUF) time constraints and an utility accrual (UA) optimality criterion. A key underpinning of the TUF/UA scheduling paradigm is the notion of "best-effort" where high importance threads are always favored over low importance ones, irrespective of thread urgency. We present a scheduling algorithm called HUA and a thread integrity protocol called TPR. We show that HUA and TPR bound the orphan cleanup and recovery time with bounded loss of the best-effort property. Our implementation experience of HUA/TPR within Sun's distributed real-time Specification for Java demonstrates the algorithm/protocol's effectiveness.

the Function Block (FB) has been defined by the international Electro-technical Commission (IEC) as the basic construct for the development of reusable, interoperable, distributed control applications. Complete applications can be defined in the design level as networks of interconnected FBs. For these design models to be automatically converted to implementation ones, adopting the model integrated computing paradigm, an appropriate implementation meta-model should be defined. In this paper we describe two alternatives for the implementation of FB design models. the first one adopts the straight forward transformation of the FB design model to a high level language (C++, Java) implementation model. the second approach utilizes UML-RT models as an intermediate representation towards the final implementation model. Both approaches support the dynamic re-configuration of the control application and exploit our extensions to the IEC Execution Control Chart notation, to improve the expressiveness of the design model and the efficiency of the implementation one.

Service selection is one of the current challenges in Service oriented computing (SOC). We propose a service selection method for replacing used services in case of a failure. the approach considers the functional as well as the non-functional features of services. Furthermore, the service selection method searches for a service just meeting the requirements and not for the best possible service exceeding the requirements. this saves services having high QoS properties for clients really in need of them. © 2011 ieee.

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) provides a smart infrastructure connecting abstract computational artifacts with the physical world. this paper presents some challenges for developing distributed real-time Cyber-Physical Systems. the focus is on one particular challenge, namely event modelling in distributed real-time CPS. A Web-of-things based CPS framework for event handling and processing is proposed. To illustrate the application of the proposed framework, a case study for achieving demand response in a smart home is provided. © 2012 ieee.
