Grid-based virtual laboratory experiments for a graduate course on sensor networks

this paper presents the pedagogical and technical challenges the authors faced in developing a distributed laboratory for the-execution of virtual scientific experiments (VSEs) superimposed on a Grid infrastructure, for a course on sensor networks that is part of the Master's in Information Networking (MSIN) program jointly offered by Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), USA and Athens Information Technology (AIT), Athens, Greece. the MSIN program utilizes virtual classroom technologies because of its strong distance learning component. Courses taught by CMU faculty are attended in real-time by students in Athens, Greece, via video-wall teleconferencing sessions. Vice versa, visiting CMU faculty to AIT teach classes that are attended by students at CMU. Students in both institutions enjoy full interactivity with their classmates on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. A distributed shared virtual laboratory is needed for, many of the more empirical courses. this paper describes the challenges and issues the authors faced in developing such a lab.

In this paper we present a prototype of the RTSC - the real-time System Compiler. the RTSC is a compiler-based tool that leverages the migration from event-triggered to time-triggered real-time systems. For this purpose, it uses an abstraction called Atomic Basic Blocks (ABBs) which is used to capture all relevant dependencies of the event-triggered system in a so-called ABB-graph. this ABB-graph is transformed by the RTSC and finally mapped to a statically computed schedule that could be executed by standard time-triggered real-time operating systems. Moreover, we demonstrate the applicability of our approach and the operation of our prototype by transforming the event-triggered implementation of a real-world embedded system into a trime-triggered equivalent. © 2010 ieee.

AADL is an architecture description language intended for model-based engineering of high-integrity systems. the AADL Behavior Annex is an extension allowing the refinement of behavioral aspects described through AADL. When implementing distributed real-time Embedded system, fault tolerance concerns are integrated by applying replication patterns. We considered a simplified design of the primary backup replication pattern to express the modeling capabilities of AADL and its annex. Our contribution intends to give accurate description of the synchronization mechanisms integrated in this example. © 2010 ieee.

Collaborations (between objects) are increasingly being recognized as fundamental building blocks to structure object-oriented design, and they have made their way into UML But very often the first class aspect of a design level collaboration is lost during the detailed design process, making it difficult to keep good traceability between the design and the implementation. the problem is not sample, because for any, given collaboration abstraction, there might be several possible design solutions depending on the many non-functional forces impacting a given application. We propose a process and an architecture in which the notion of collaboration is preserved from analysis to design and implementation, while allowing the designer to change his mind about which particular design trade-off is selected in order to face changing non-Junctional requirements during maintenance. We illustrate our approach with a case study inspired by the real example of a large French railway company attempting to adapt a flight reservation system to its own context.

Service overlays that support distributed stream processing applications are increasingly being deployed in wide-area environments. the inherent heterogeneous, dynamic and large-scale nature of these systems makes it difficult to meet the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of the distributed stream processing applications. In this paper we address the load balancing problem for distributed stream processing applications and present a decentralized and adaptive algorithm that allows the composition of distributed stream processing applications on the fly across a large-scale system, while satisfying their QoS demands. the algorithm fairly distributes the load on the resources and adapts dynamically to changes in the resource utilization or the QoS requirements of the applications. Our experimental results demonstrate the scalability, efficiency and performance of our approach.

In classical real-time systems the resources for an application are allocated at system start so that every resource request can be fulfilled in future. this would lead to much internal waste of resources in the case of modern Self-X systems, because these systems have highly dynamic resource consumptions. the Flexible Resource Manager (FRM) was developed to overcome this problem. the manager puts temporarily unused resources at other applications' disposal. In this paper the FRM approach is evaluated by concrete application examples and randomly generated applications. © 2010 ieee.

In an ORC (object-oriented real-time computing) environment, it is important to reduce message retransmissions during message passing because these retransmissions cause significant time delay. And, this makes it difficult to achieve the necessary timeliness. A cause of retransmission is message loss due to buffer overflow at the reception side. Here a P+I+D (P for proportional, I for integral and D for derivative) adaptive buffer control algorithm is proposed to prevent such possible overflow. the I control depends on the Convergence Algorithm (CA), which is a stable and efficient IEPM (Internet End-to-End Performance Measurement) toot that predicts the mean message roundtrip time (RTT) of a communication channel quickly and accurately,. the P+I+D algorithm was tested under different conditions in a mobile ORC (MORC) environment, where mobile agents collaborate freely over the Internet. the different test results confirm that the proposed P+I+D approach is indeed effective for preventing buffer overflow.

Sensor webs are often composed of servers connected to distributed real-time embedded (DRE) systems that operate in open environments where operating conditions, workload, resource availability, and connectivity cannot be accurately characterized a priori. the South East Alaska MOnitoring Network for Science, Telecommunications, Education, and Research (SEAMONSTER) project exhibits many common system management and dynamic operation challenges for effective, autonomous system adaptation in a representative sensor web. these challenges cover both field operation (e.g., power management through system sleep/wake cycles and reaction to local environmental changes) and server operation (e.g., system adaptation for new/modified goals, resource allocation for a changing set of applications, and configuration changes for fluctuating workload). this paper presents the results of integrating and applying quality-of-service (QoS)-enabled component middle-ware, dynamic resource management, and autonomous agent technologies to address these challenges in SEAMONSTER.

In this paper, a Role-based Access Control (RBAC) model is applied and extended to a multimedia version called Multi-Role Based Access Control (MRBAC), which can fully support the comprehensive and multilevel security control requirements of the distributed multimedia applications. the object-oriented concept is adopted in MRBAC to perform the hybrid role hierarchy management and security roles and rules administration. In summary, MRBAC can: 1) support the multi-level security protection for multimedia data;2) provide access control by checking both the time constrains and IP addresses;and 3) decentralize the administration functions to make the access control management more efficient.

the demand for real-time database services has been increasing recently. Examples include sensor data fusion, stock trading, decision support, web information services, and data-intensive smart spaces. In these systems, it is essential to execute transactions in time using fresh (temporally consistent) data. Due to the high service demand, many transactions may miss their deadlines regardless of their importance. To address the problem, we present a service differentiation architecture for real-time databases. Transactions are classified into several service classes based on their importance. Under overload, different degrees of deadline miss ratio guarantees are provided among the service classes according to their importance. A certain data freshness guarantee is also provided for the data accessed by timely transactions which finish within their deadlines. Feedback control is applied to support the miss ratio and freshness guarantees. In a simulation study, our service differentiation approach shows a significant performance improvement compared to the baseline approaches. the specified miss ratio and freshness are supported even in the presence of unpredictable workloads and data access patterns.
