Augmented reality and group communication in wireless ad-hoc networks form relatively, new fields of research. When using group communication ordering and timeliness requirements are important. Moreover, when using wireless ad-hoc networks, the possibility of network partition is a serious consideration. In this paper we explore these three issues in the context of using group communication to support mobile augmented reality applications. We describe a policy that enables us to handle partitions and failures, while allowing the members in a partition to make progress, although limited by the application's consistency requirements. We introduce an approach to determining the message ordering requirements needed to maintain a desired level of consistency and timeliness requirements that should be met in order to have the application state correspond to the sequence of events perceived in the real world.

During the last years, component based software development has become a well accepted software engineering paradigm within the automotive industry. this fact is not only reflected by upcoming development tools but also by newly arising automotive software standards. In component based software engineering, applications are built by assembling small reusable building blocks, the components. Typically more than one component implementation meets the application developer's requirements, so proper selection of the assembled components becomes a key element of the whole procurement and engineering process. this paper's contribution is twofold: First, a basic set of performance and dependability metrics and measures for automotive components is identified. Second, a unified benchmarking process is proposed, that allows an unambiguous comparison of distinct component implementations of a given component class.

As an emergence technology, P2P is spreading to distributed simulation area, and many distributed simulation frameworks have used P2P as the middleware to interconnect their existing single processor's simulators to fibrin distributed environments for simulation execution. In terms of simulation time management, most existing tools use a middleware layer to implement and support time management in a heterogeneous networking environment. and therefore, it is generally not easy, v to migrate a single processors simulation to multi-processors in these frameworks. In this paper, we present a P2P based distributed simulation time management based upon JXTA API and Service oriented Architecture (SOA), and we focus our discussion on how we implement the time management as a JXTA peer and a JXTA group service. Our time management is actually, a native distributed message passing management framework, and does not rely on any middleware layer. Furthermore, we evaluate the performance of our implementations using a local Linux cluster. this work will establish a solid foundation for the more advanced distributed simulation services that have been proposed in our project [1].

As systems become more distributed, they also become more complex. To ensure consistent execution while maximizing availability, distributed applications use various mechanisms such as replication, load balancing, and data caching. the protocols used for consistency management and component availability are traditionally instantiated by the application. However in distributed object-based environments like CORBA or Java RMI, the infrastructure can often determine adequate protocols to guarantee liveness and safety based on the request and semantic knowledge of the application. this paper discusses how semantic knowledge of distributed objects can help implement intelligent behavior in middleware and choose optimal protocols for distributed component interactions.

the development of safety critical software applications has always been done in accordance to strict methods. these systems require the application of verification techniques that guarantee safety properties. Often, they are complex systems that require the integration of different types of engineers such as safety engineers and software architects. Currently, different groups of engineers apply different analysis and modeling techniques (e.g. architectural description languages, and safety analysis models);these differences create inconsistencies between different types of model. In this paper we introduce some solutions to reduce these problems in some safety architectures. these solutions integrate developing modeling languages such as UML and specific safely analysis languages such as FTA and FMECA.

Some concerns, such as debugging or logging functionality, cannot be captured cleanly, and are often tangled and scattered throughout the code base. these concerns are called crosscutting concerns. Aspect-oriented Programming (AOP) is a paradigm that enables developers to capture crosscutting concerns in separate aspect modules. the use of aspects has been shown to improve understandability and maintainability of systems. It has been shown that real-time concerns, such as memory management and thread scheduling, are crosscutting concerns [5, 6, 9, 11]. However it is unclear whether encapsulating these concerns provides benefits. We were interested in determining whether using AOP to encapsulate real-time crosscutting concerns afforded benefits in system properties such as understandability and maintainability. this paper presents research comparing the system properties of two systems: a real-time sentient traffic simulator and its Aspect-oriented equivalent. An evaluation of AOP is presented indicating both benefits and drawbacks with this approach.

Modeling and design of distributed real-time embedded systems tend to be a very complex work, specially when heterogeneous systems and tasks synchronization are involved. In this sense, specific framework can help dealing with such complexity. this paper describes such a framework, which has been developed to help developers in task of modeling and implementation embedded real-time applications. the framework extends SIMOO-RT, an object-oriented software tool developed at UFRGS, with the possibility of using components. A component library template, the use of a deployment diagram for the configuration of a given component-based solution to different target architectures, and a new code generator are the main extensions proposed. the paper gives an overview on the proposed extensions, explaining its use by means of some developed case-studies.

Cyber-physical systems pose considerable technical challenges, ranging from the distributed programming paradigms to networking protocols with timeliness as a structuring concern, including systems theory that combines physical concerns and computational concerns Cyber Physical systems is deemed correct in case it abides to the functional correctness as well as a set of quantitative characteristics Formal specification techniques for such systems have to be able to describe all these concerns. Unfortunately, a single specification technique that is well suited for all these concerns s is yet not available. Instead one finds various specialized techniques that are very good at describing individual concerns of cyber-physical system. this observation has led to research into the combination and semantic integration of specification techniques. this paper proposes an approach for specifying real time cyber physical systems based on aspect-oriented formal specification, which exploits the diversity and power of existing formal specification languages. We provide an aspect-oriented specification approach based on the combination of object-Z and time-CSP. We increase separation variable in the basic elements and crosscutting concerns to achieve formalization of aspect-oriented characteristics. this aspect oriented formal specification method simplifies the requirement analysis process of real time cyber physical systems. Two case studies illustrate the specification process of aspect-oriented formal specification for real time cyber physical systems.

the network connectivity is a basic requirement while implementing fundamental communication and storage abstractions in P2P networks, featuring scalability and fault-tolerance. the quality of services of abstractions like for example multicast, publish/subscribe, group membership or persistent storage is strongly related to the connectivity degree of the underlying overlay. Intuitively, a higher overlay connectivity ensures a reinforced reliability and consequently, the deployment of distributed applications with real-time constraints on top of these overlays becomes feasible even in environments characterized by a high dynamicity, i.e., nodes arriving and departing at a high rate. Our paper proposes a novel delta-connected DHT-free P2P overlay. Our overlay offers strong connectivity guarantees despite the system dynamicity. the construction and the maintenance of our overlay is completely decentralized and handled strictly locally, through deterministic algorithms whose correctness is rigorously proved.

A middleware model named ROAFTS (real-time object-oriented Adaptive Fault Tolerance Support) has been evolving in the UCI DREAM Lab. over the past decade as the core of a reliable execution engine model for fault-tolerant (FT) real-time (RT) distributed computing (DC) applications. It is meant to be an integration of various mechanisms for fault detection and recovery in a form that meshes well with high-level RT DC object/component-based programming, in particular, TMO (time-triggered Message-triggered object) programming. Using ROAFTS as a backbone and low-layer middleware, we developed a model and a skeleton implementation for FT DC middleware providing efficient FT execution services for component-based home network applications. Capabilities for management of home information processing devices, including health monitoring of home devices, reconfiguration of device connections, and servicing queries on device status, were added to ROAFTS. those additions were first designed as a network of high-level RT DC components, i.e., TMOs. then the TMO network was extended into an FT TMO network by applying the replication scheme called the PSTR (Primary-Shadow TMO Replication) scheme and incorporating a component responsible for reconfiguring TMO replicas. this extension of ROAFTS is called ROAFTS-HNE (Home Network Extension) and its architecture is presented here. In addition, during the development of the ROAFTS-HNE model, we formulated a new approach for applying the PSTR scheme to RT DC components supported by ROAFTS. Finally, evaluations of the recovery times of a prototype implementation have been conducted.
