Dynamic load balancing is a key factor in achieving high performance for large scale distributed simulations on grid infrastructures. In a grid environment, the available resources and the simulation's computation and communication behavior may experience run-time critical imbalances. Consequently, an initial static partitioning should be combined with a dynamic load balancing scheme to ensure the high performance of the distributed simulation. In this paper, we propose a novel dynamic load balancing scheme for distributed simulations on a grid infrastructure. Our scheme is composed of an online network analyzing service coupled with monitoring agents and a run-time model repartitioning service. We present a hierarchical scalable adaptive JXTA service based scheme and demonstrate through simulation experiments that our proposed scheme exhibits better performance in terms of the simulation execution time.

Systems such as coordinating robot systems, automobiles, aircrafts, and chemical process control systems can be modeled as interacting hybrid systems, where hybrid systems are finite state machines with continuous dynamics. the language CHARON and its simulator have been developed to model and analyze interacting hybrid systems as communicating agents. Simulations are widely used for the analyses of hybrid systems. the simulation of a complex system is, however usually very slow. this paper proposes four algorithms for distributed simulations of hybrid systems. the idea behind distributed simulations is to achieve a speedup by utilizing multiple computing resources. the agents of a modeled system. are distributed over multiple processors to simulate the agents more efficiently. Since the state of the agent is affected by the input from other agents, they synchronize to update their local states. the challenge here is how to reduce the agent synchronization overhead. We present two approaches for resolving the problem: conservative and optimistic approaches. For the optimistic approach, we present three different algorithms for distributed simulations of hybrid systems, and compare them.

Running a large-scale distributed simulation may need a large amount of computing resources at geographically different locations. these resources may be from different organizations. the simulation may run for a long period of time and the availability and the amount of computing resources available may change during the course of the simulation execution. therefore, coordinating and managing the resources for distributed simulation to complete the simulation efficiently and effectively is a, critical issue. this paper describes a load management system for HLA-based distributed simulation. the system is constructed on top of a Grid computing environment supported by Globus. the overall structure of the system is presented in the paper and how the system saves and restores a federate is also discussed in detail.

Tele-immersion is one of the applications being developed in conjunction with the Internet-2 initiative. Most of the research in this area has focused on issues pertaining to image acquisition and display, tracking technologies, robotics, haptics, etc. In order to maintain consistency of a tele-immersive experience one also needs to develop a suit of solutions that will ensure proper coordination between the participants. this will require protocols for real-time causal delivery, of messages while maintaining the privacy of conversations and preventing forgery of message contents. this paper discusses these issues while considering a tele-immersive environment as a distributed message passing system.

Service-oriented systems are distributed systems which have the major advantage of enabling rapid composition of distributed applications, regardless of the programming languages and platforms used in developing and running different components of the applications. In these systems, various capabilities are provided by different organizations as services interconnected by various types of networks. the services can be integrated following a specific workflow to achieve a mission goal for users. For large-scale service-based systems involving multiple organizations, high confidence and adaptability are of prime concern in order to ensure that users can use these systems anywhere, anytime with various devices, knowing that their confidentiality and privacy are well protected and the systems will adapt to satisfy their needs in various situations. Hence, these systems must be adaptable, situation-aware and secure. In this paper, an approach to rapid development of adaptable situation-aware secure service-based (AS) systems is presented. Our approach enables users to rapidly generate, discover, compose services into processes to achieve their goals based on the situation and adapt these processes when situation changes.

Performance analysis tools for enterprise distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems require instrumenting heterogeneous sources (such as application- and system-level hardware and software resources). Traditional techniques for software instrumentation of such systems, however, are tightly coupled to system design and metrics of interest. It is therefore hard for system testers to increase their knowledge base and analytical capabilities for enterprise DRE system performance using existing instrumentation techniques when metrics of interest are not known during initial system design. this paper provides two contributions to research on software instrumentation for enterprise DRE systems. First, it presents OASIS, which is service-oriented middleware for instrumenting enterprise DRE systems to collect and extract metrics without design time knowledge of which metrics are collected. Second, this paper empirically evaluates OASIS in the context of a representative enterprise DRE system from the domain of shipboard computing. Results from applying OASIS to a representative enterprise DRE system show that its flexibility enables DRE system testers to precisely control the overhead incurred via instrumentation. © 2010 ieee.

Developing real-time software for large-scale distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems is hard due to variabilities that arise from (1) integration with various subsystems based on different programming languages and hardware, OS, middleware platforms, (2) fine tuning the system to satisfy a range of customer requirements, such as various quality-of-service (QoS) properties, and (3) changing functional and QoS properties of the system based on available system resources. this paper describes our experience applying model-driven development (MDD) tools and QoS-enabled component middleware technologies to address domain- and middleware-specific variability, challenges in an inventory tracking system, which manages the storage and flow of items in warehouses. Our results show that (1) coherent integration of MDD tools and component middleware can provide a productive software process for developing DRE systems by modularizing and composing variability concerns and (2) significant challenges remain that must be overcome to apply these technologies to a broader range of DRE systems.

distributed real-time Embedded systems (DRE) increasingly rely on COTS middleware to meet their distribution needs. Yet, there is a technology gap between the design of COTS middleware and the high-integrity constraints of real-time engineering. this puts a limit on the adoption of middleware by system families such as space or avionics. In this paper, we present our current work on the "schizophrenic middleware architecture", a highly tailorable middleware architecture, and its implementation PolyORB. We illustrate how it allows for support of real-time engineering guidelines, enforces determinism, allows for modeling and verification.

the increasing use of wireless networks has necessitated the development of a wireless networking infrastructure that supports quality of service (QoS) for multimedia communications. Proxy servers are gaining prominence in facilitating QoS assurance and intelligent resource allocation for multimedia services. In this paper, we propose a proxy-based framework that provides QoS support to mobile users. We describe the overall QoS architecture and implement a number of key QoS functions, including bandwidth allocation and synchronization. In this architecture, admission control is exercised to ensure the long-term availability of resources to mobile clients, where the resources include bandwidth for supporting required presentation rates and buffer for synchronizing media streams. Bandwidth allocation is implemented in Linux Traffic Control using Stochastic Fairness Queueing and Token Bucket Filter disciplines to provide bandwidth guarantees for the multimedia connections. An adaptive synchronization technique is also implemented in the proxy to synchronize multiple streams originating from different sources before transmitting them to the clients for presentation. Finally, a number of quality adaptation strategies that accommodate the diverse requirements and capabilities of clients are described.

Many real-time systems use preemptive priority-based scheduling in their internals to guarantee certain real-time performance. this includes technologies that range from the real-time Specification for Java (RTSJ) to middleware like real-time Common object Request Broker Architecture (RT-CORBA), which offers additional models and policies that blend client and server information. this decision eases the integration of real-time admission tests and dispatching policies in these types of infrastructures. In this paper, we analyze different trade-offs that emerge from the definition of different propagation models for distributed real-time Java. the paper covers technological integration aspects as impact on interfaces and other practical issues mainly related to the performance that this model offers to a real-time application and non-functional overhead. the contribution described in the paper may help in the development of the distributed Specification for Java (DRTSJ).
