Desktop grids use the idle cycles of desktop PC's to provide huge computational power at low cost. However, because the underlying desktop computing resources are volatile, achieving performance guarantees such as task completion rate is difficult. We investigate the use of buffering to ensure task completion rates, which is essential for soft real-time applications. In particular we develop a model of task completion rate as a function of buffer size. We instantiate this model using parameters derived from two enterprise desktop grid data sets, evaluate the model via trace-driven simulation, and show how this model can be used to ensure application task completion rates on enterprise desktop grid systems.

Multicore processors can deliver higher performance than single-core processors by exploiting thread level parallelism (TLP): applications are split into independent threads, each of which is mapped into a different core, reducing the execution time and potentially its worst-case execution time (WCET). Unfortunately, inter-thread interferences generated by simultaneous accesses to shared resources from different threads may completely destroy the performance benefits brought by TLP. this paper proposes a software/hardware cache partitioning approach that reduces the inter-thread memory interferences generated in hard real-time software-pipelined parallel applications. Our results show that our approach effectively reduces memory interferences, while still guaranteeing a predictable timing behaviour, achieving a WCET estimation reduction of 28% for a software pipelined version of the LU decomposition application with respect to the single-threaded version. © 2011 ieee.

the High-Level Architecture (HLA) provides a common architecture for distributed modeling and simulation. In its original form, the HLA allows a number of simulations to be joined together into a federation using a single run time infrastructure. Recently there has been an interest in joining multiple such federations together using a mediating unit, called an HLA "bridge." this paper presents the results of an in-depth study of the feasibility of an HLA bridge in the context of the current HLA interface specification. Problems and solutions are discussed and illustrated using particular HLA services.

QoS-aware service management and composition has become an interesting research topic with the rapid development of Service oriented Architecture (SOA). Differently, with web-services based systems, the emergence of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) based distributed network technology brings more challenge to the QoS-aware service management and composition. In this paper, we propose our design of a QoS-aware hierarchical service composition and management system in a context of JXTA-enabled P2P network. We conducted a comparison experiment of our design with commonly used flat-based service composition and management, and found that our design outperforms the flat-based one in terms of a higher success rate for satisfying the user's QoS requirement. Furthermore, we used a RT-DEVS model based formal approach to validate our design, and believe that it can be a promising technology in aiding the design of an efficient QoS-aware service composition and management system.

Java is a programming technology which has been extended in order to provide the timeliness required by real-time systems (e.g., RTSJ). there are two RTSJ-based profiles: DRTSJ supporting distributed real-time Java systems and SCJS supporting the development of programs that must be certified. However neither of them considers dynamics characteristics allowing the system to be adapted to the changing environment. distributed safety-critical systems that must provide continuous service (e.g., air-traffic control systems or enterprise and financial applications) require dynamic updates. Dynamic software modification is a useful capability because the application is able to update itself to fix bugs and add new features without requiring a stop and a restart. In this paper, we overview Java solutions considering real-time requirements in service-oriented component models allowing dynamics updates (e.g., OSGi). © 2012 ieee.

Music synthesis often relies on very computationally intensive algorithms. Various strategies Rave been used to deal with the complexity, including using simpler, but more limited algorithms, using specialized hardware, and executing them in non-real-time for later playback. Although several implementations using parallel hardware have been done, very little has been bone with distributed implementations on clusters of workstations. distributed music synthesis is typical of distributed multimedia applications which use multiple servers to do computations generating high-bandwidth audio/video data, based on low-bandwidth control information. this work demonstrates distributed music synthesis and describes the effects of using different communication protocol and networks. the implementation is a version of the Csound music synthesis package which has been modified to distribute the synthesis load to multiple servers. the network performance should also be applicable to applications which use a high-bandwidth pipeline of processes, which would be appropriate for audio and video post-processing.

We envision that in the near future, humanoid robots would share home space and assist us in our daily and routine activities through object manipulations. One of the fundamental technologies that needs to be developed for the robots is to enable them to detect objects and recognize them for effective manipulations and take real-time decisions involving the same. In this paper, we describe a novel architecture that enables multiple low-compute NAO robots to perform real-time detection, recognition and localization of objects in its camera view and take programmable actions based on the detected objects. the proposed algorithm for object detection and localization is an empirical modification of YOLOv3 along with a distributed architecture to operate multiple robots on a central "inference engine", based on indoor experiments in multiple scenarios, with a smaller weight size and lesser computational requirements. YOLOv3 was chosen after a comparative study of bounding box algorithms was performed with an objective to choose one that strikes the perfect balance among information retention, low inference time and high accuracy for real-time object detection and localization. Quantization of the weights and re-adjusting filter sizes and layer arrangements for convolutions improved the inference time for low-resolution images from the robot's camera feed. the architecture also comprises of an effective end-to-end pipeline to feed the real-time frames from the camera feed to the neural net and use its results for guiding the robot with customizable actions corresponding to the detected class labels.

Resource sharing across different computers and organizations makes it possible to support diverse, dynamic changing resource requirements of distributed applications. Reservation mechanisms have been used to reserve resources for external applications through service level agreements between local resource organizations and external applications. However, the effects of resource reservation on local applications, and therefore the trustfulness of the successful fulfillment of the service agreement, have been ignored In this paper, we investigate the effect of resource reservation on external applications as well as local jobs, and design efficient task scheduling algorithms considering the tolerance of local jobs to resource reservation. Extensive simulations and implementation experiments have been carried out to confirm our analysis results. Experimental results show that the relative slowdown metric and the failure minimization scheduling algorithms proposed in this study are practically effective and have a real potential.

In spite of the progress made in the past decade, the quality-of-services (QoS) of the video-conferencing (VC) systems involving four or more sites need to be improved much further in order to attract a large number of users. One of the key issues in enabling high-level QoS in multi-party (MP) VC systems is the accurate maintenance of the temporal relationship among media units (MUs) from creation to play while keeping the MU delivery delays within acceptable bounds. Unlike the case of two-party video-conferencing, MP VC requires multiple media streams to be delivered to multiple sites with a high degree of synchrony. In this paper, an MP VC system model called the SB-VC system in which a global-time-based synchronization approach called the target play time (TPT) scheme is used is presented. the TPT scheme is highly effective in achieving high-precision infra-stream, interstream, and inter-destination synchronizations in MP VC. As a validation, a prototype SB-VC system has been constructed by use of the time-triggered Message-triggered object (TMO) specification and programming scheme and its tool-kit. Its performance is compared against that of an advanced research prototype developed by Microsoft, ConferenceXP, and the results demonstrate that the SB-VC system is a promising model for realizing next-generation VC systems that offer QoSs significantly better than those of current-generation VC systems.

the Common object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) is the most successful representative of an object-based distributed computing architecture. Although CORBA simplifies the implementation of complex, distributed systems significantly, the support of techniques for reliable, fault-tolerant, and secure software is very limited in the state-of-the-art CORBA. Extensions, such Lis the CORBAsec specification provide only a limited choice of coarse-grained mechanisms to specify access rights for components. Any, fault-tolerance or security extension for CORBA components needs to trade off data abstraction and encapsulation against implementation specific knowledge about a component's internal behavior, resource usage, interaction and access patterns. these non-functional aspects of a component are crucial for the predictable behavior of security and fault-tolerance mechanisms. However, in contrast to CORBA's interface definition language (IDL), which describes a component's functional interface, there is no general means to describe a component's non-functional properties, such as security settings or fault-tolerance. Within this paper we present our approach towards role-based security for CORBA. Following the idea of aspect-oriented programming, we have developed a description language for security settings. the description language uses the extended Markup Language (XML) as an underlying representation and allows specification of access rights independently from an object's implementation. A role-editor tool allows for configuration of a component's security settings without affecting the component's source code. Security settings are enforced ky our enhanced version of the ORBacus CORBA implementation. We discuss the necessary description and configuration steps for a secure CORBA service.
