A distributed multicast routing algorithm for real-time applications in wide area networks

the problem of constructing a minimal cost multicast routing tree (MRT) with delay constraints in wide area networks (WAN) is considered. A new distributed token-passing based algorithm that constructs a sub-optimal MRT satisfying given delay constraints for all members in the multicast group is presented. In contrast with the previous works by Jia [A distributed algorithm of delay-bounded multicast routing for multimedia applications in wide area networks, ieee/ACM Trans. Network. 6 (1998) 828-837] and several others [Y. Im, Y. Lee, S. Wi, Y. Choi, Delay constrained distributed multicast routing algorithm, Comput. Comm. 20 (1997) 60-66;X. Jia, Y. Zhang, N. Pissinou, K. Makki, A distributed multicast routing protocol for real-time multicast applications, Comput. Networks 31 (1999) 101-110;Q Sun, H. Langendorfer, A distributed delay-constrained dynamic multicast routing algorithm, Telecommun. Systems 11 (1999) 47-58], in which cycles may occur, we show that the multicast routing network produced by our algorithm is indeed a tree, namely, cycle free. Also the success rate of our algorithm to find a feasible solution, if one exists, is guaranteed to be 100%, while Jia's algorithm is not. Furthermore, our algorithm is fault tolerant and can also adapt to cases where the multicast group members are allowed to join or leave the multicast session dynamically. Simulations have been conducted and the results show that the MRT generated by our algorithm has better performance compared to previous methods. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we present a prototype of the real-time Systems Compiler (RTSC). the RTSC is a compiler-based tool that enables the migration from event-triggered to time-triggered real-time systems. this is achieved by replacing the real-time systems architecture of a given real-time system. the real-time systems architecture governs the structural properties of the white-box view of a real-time system: how are tasks attached to events and how are dependencies between different tasks implemented. the RTSC uses an abstraction called Atomic Basic Blocks (ABBs) to hide the real-time systems architecture and capture all relevant dependencies of an event-triggered system in a global ABB-graph. the RTSC automatically extracts that ABB-graph from an event-triggered real-time system given as source code, transforms that ABB-graph appropriately, and maps it to a statically computed schedule that could be executed by standard time-triggered real-time operating systems. Important temporal properties of the physical environment of the real-time system needed for that transformation are stored in a system model provided as additional input to the RTSC. Furthermore, we demonstrate the applicability of our approach and the operation of our prototype by transforming an event-triggered control application into a time-triggered equivalent. the recent decade witnesses the prevalence of hybrid storage systems that offer storage based on diverse storage devices to achieve both cost savings and performance improvements. However, there have been little of studies focusing on the challenging scenario of providing hybrid block storage for Virtual Machines (VMs), which is subject to several stringent requirements such as availability and scalability. To bridge this gap, we designed and implemented a multi-tiered storage system called MOBBS which provides hybrid block storage for VMs on top of object-based storage infrastructure. MOBBS achieves efficient utilization of different storage devices by striping data into partitions and intelligently determining appropriate data placement by monitoring and analyzing real-time workloads. Moveover, leveraging the benefits of object-based storage, several techniques are designed to promise storage provisioning for VMs with high availability and scalability. A Ceph implementation of MOBBS is evaluated using both block and file system workloads. the results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of MOBBS in utilization of different storage devices.

the High Level Architecture allows simulation components Of various hypes to be joined together into a federation to create a common virtual environment. However with the increased complexity of simulations, not all user requirements can be satisfied by a flat federation. the requirement of selective information hiding naturally suggests a Hierarchical Federations Architecture (HFA) where federations are organized into hierarchies so that a federation appears as a federate in an upper level federation. In order to provide reusability and interoperability at the federation level, a federation should be able to participate in different super-federations without requiring code modification. In this paper we present an approach to automatically construct the HFA. We describe the information that must be provided by the participating user federations and how this is used to construct the Universal object Model (UOM) used by the super-FOMs (the FOMs of super-federations). We show how the structure for selective information hiding is generated from the user information and how gateway federates are automatically constructed to support super-FOM independence.

the final objective of the described project is to develop and implement techniques for a reliable cooperation of autonomous mobile systems that can be used for future traffic management systems. the approach relies on the ability of the systems to communicate among themselves in order to make efficient use of available shared resources (e.g. road space). In the context of automotives this means that computer-based driving assistants not only support humans in handling their own vehicles but also in interacting with the individual vehicles in the neighborhood. the vision is an embedded, distributed traffic control system that is provided by the cooperation of the participating units, and thus is more robust and scalable than centralized approaches. Besides the 'obvious' requirements on high assurance computing in traffic control systems, the design and implementation of such systems require the ability of coordination while obeying the necessary real-time and safety constraints. this paper motivates the approach, presents an envisaged system architecture and sketches the design of the basic communication layers of this architecture that can fulfill the real-time and safety requirements. Finally, it introduces a lab-scale evaluation and demonstration scenario that proves the feasibility of the concepts.

Massively distributed Embedded Systems (MDES) such as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are gaining increasing attention, since they enable a broad range of novel applications starting from monitoring oceans to exploring distant planets. WSNs consist of hundreds of nodes that have typically very limited recourses (computational, memory, energy, etc.) and are deployed in a dynamic environment, where they have to continuously adapt to new conditions. Due to the small-size requirement of the nodes, they are highly resource-constrained. Because of that, the amount of functionality that may be present in each node is limited. therefore, cooperation between nodes is needed in order to accomplish complex tasks. these facts turn the design of applications for WSNs into a challenge. A promising approach how to deal with it is to use the emergent self-organization metaphor. In this paper a new process algebra (PA) called "Locality-aware extension of π-Calculus" is presented. the algebra is one of several techniques included in a new design methodology for the design of self-organizing behavior in MDES. the method is based on π-Calculus and allows a high-level description of interactions among processes. As the most important characteristic of self-organization is the restriction of interactions to neighboring elements (localized interactions), we extend the π-Calculus with locality awareness, a necessary abstraction to allow the modeling of self-organization in MDES. To get full locality awareness in π-Calculus, we extended it with concepts for modeling spatiality, probability and time. Moreover, new types of channels are included to cover various types of communication such as distribution, broadcast and aggregation. In order to validate this new PA, we successfully model a self-organizing clustering algorithm for WSNs. © 2010 ieee.

the General Packet Radio Set-vice (GPRS) has recently become a standard to extend the services provided by the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). GPRS addresses packet-oriented traffic, by allowing a more efficient usage of the radio resources with a consequent improvement in the QoS of subscribers. this paper focuses on a preliminary evaluation of dependability and performance figures of the GPRS, by analyzing its behavior during the contention phase where users compete for the channel reservation. the presented work constitutes the first step towards the analysis of the GPRS under critical conditions, as determined by periods of outages, which significantly impact on the dependability of the GPRS itself. In fact, outages imply service unavailability, with a consequent accumulation of users actively waiting for making a service request, leading to a higher probability of collisions on requests (and therefore a degradation of the QoS perceived by the users) when the system comes back lip again. Here, some analyses have been performed, using a simulation approach, to gain insights on appropriate settings for the GPRS, at varying values of internal and external system conditions.

Faster networks, faster processors, and standardized protocols have enabled the emergence of interactive applications running over commercial networks such as the Internet, In such applications, multiple users interact with one another by exchanging real-time information such as user position and orientation in a virtual world, live and recorded audio, video, and text. these applications include interactive shopping, team training, virtual meeting rooms, and multi-player games. However, to date, these interactive systems have supported a limited number of information types, offered limited scalability, and have failed to account for a heterogeneous network and processor environment. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of InVerse, an infrastructure that supports real-time interactive applications on the Internet. InVerse provides a common backplane for disseminating and managing multiple real-time data streams. Within this general-purpose structure, the InVerse system maximizes scalability by implementing a hybrid communications architecture that adapts itself to available network bandwidth, observed network latency, installed network security measures, and available services such as multicast.
