Data stream processing can be applied in scenarios where high throughput and real-time response is required. In distributed environments, preprocessing at sensor nodes is beneficial. Processing logic is deployed at sensor nodes and data is processed while streaming through the nodes. However, updating the logic is difficult in such a continuously running environment. Volatile operator states get lost if nodes are restarted for an update. the challenge is to update the operators during the runtime with the preservation of their states. We developed a data stream processing solution which is capable of adapting the logic on-the-fly. States are copied while migrating from the original to new logic. For implementation, we utilized the dynamic component system OSGi. In this paper we present methods for state selection and transfer from the input buffers of the running operators. the state values to be transferred are limited to a minimum quantity. the state transfer methods allow a faster migration compared to other approaches and a guaranteed output, which makes our system real-time compatible.

Finite state machine (FSM) models are widely used to model the operations of computer systems. Since the basic FSM model is timeless, it is not possible to model within the basic FSM framework system properties that are dependent on the progression of real time, such as the duration of computations or the limited temporal validity of real-time data. To overcome these limitations, efforts have been made to modify the FSM model to include some notion of time. It is the objective of this paper to expand existing work on basic FSMs and timed automata to include the concept of a sparse global time base as a central element of the model. We call such an extended FSM model a periodic finite state machine (PFSM) model. the PFSM model also incorporates the notions of state variables, global time, periodic clock constraints, and time-triggered activities. thereby, PFSMs enable a concise and intuitive representation of distributed control systems and reduce the gap between a modeled system and its implementation

Complex software systems often suffer from flaws arising either during the design or the development stages. In many cases due to the lack of formal underpinning it is difficult to assuredly define the model from which the system is generated. In our work, we investigated the suitability of mathematical situation theory as a formal foundation for a computer modelling language. this paper describes our empirical evaluation of this thesis in the real-time domain using Infon Lab, a tool based upon situation theory.

Compared to the conventional physical cluster, the virtual cluster technology has features such as flexible configuration, easy management and high system security, which provides users with an easily customized computing environment. Virtual machine image files as the most important stored objects in the virtual computing environment include all the information about the whole life cycle of virtual machine. the storage of the virtual machine images is an important part of virtual computing. there are mainly two ways to store the images, which include local storage and networking storage. this paper proposes a mechanism to manage the distributed image files to support the virtual computing environment. It uses the computing nodes` local storage as a chunk server in a distributed file system, and regards the distribution of the image files as a primary factor to choose the computing node to deploy virtual machine and to implement a backup mechanism of distributed images based on historical records of image files. Functional test and performance test results show that it can effectively support the virtual computing environment and has great values of applications and research.

this paper describes an integrated approach for the design and subsequent behavioral analysis of concurrent software designs for embedded systems. the approach integrates software design using the COMET concurrent object-oriented design method, colored Petri net (CPN) modeling, and performance measurement of the target system. the approach combines information from platform-independent and platform-specific models to construct analyses of software architectures for embedded systems. It allows an engineer/analyst to examine behavioral and performance properties of a software architecture design paired with a candidate implementation architecture. Applying the behavioral design patterns in the UML-based design along with corresponding CPN templates, the results from the analyses can be directly mapped back to the original design artifacts. the approach is illustrated using a robot controller case study

For the provision of dependable search and rescue capability in dynamic and unpredictable disaster areas, each networked node should have ability to (1) autonomously support and co-operate with each other in a peer-to-peer (P2P) manner to quickly discover and dependably self-configure services available on the disaster area to deliver a real-time capability; (2) modify their behaviours to deliver a sustainable capability according to environmental changes; (3) self-organise themselves to generate higher flexibility and adaptability for disaster management systems; and (4) share information and generate access throughout the network. In this paper, we propose an Adaptive and Efficient Peer-to-peer Search (AEPS) approach for dependable service integration on service-oriented architecture based on a number of social behaviour patterns. AEPS is capable to efficiently discover desirable services for disaster monitoring and relief by interacting with connected nodes and to support dependable dynamic service integration in real time through coping with rapid and significant changes in the disaster area. AEPS has no single point of failure, providing greater dependability in provision of capability even in the worst case of failure of service registry.

Many applications in the industrial control domain are safety-critical. A large number of analysis techniques to guarantee safety may be applied at different levels in the development process of a Programmable Logic Controller. the development process is typically associated with a tool chain comprising model transformations. the preservation of safety properties in model transformations is necessary to achieve a safe system. Preservation can be guaranteed by showing that invariants are preserved by transformations. Adequate transformation rules and invariant specification mechanisms are needed for this. We report on a transformation from Sequential Function Charts and Function Block Diagrams of the IEC 61131-3 standard to BIP. Our presentation features a description of formal syntax and semantics of the involved languages. We present transformation rules for generating BIP code out of IEC 61131-3 specifications. Based on this, we establish a notion of invariant preservation between the two languages.

In this paper we are interested in mixed-criticality embedded real-time applications mapped on distributed heterogeneous architectures. the architecture provides both spatial and temporal partitioning, thus enforcing enough separation for the critical applications. With temporal partitioning, each application is allowed to run only within predefined time slots, allocated on each processor. the sequence of time slots for all the applications on a processor are grouped within a Major Frame, which is repeated periodically. We assume that the safety-critical applications (on all criticality levels) are scheduled using static-cyclic scheduling and the non-critical applications are scheduled using fixed-priority preemptive scheduling. We consider that each application runs in a separate partition, and each partition is allocated several time slots on the processors where the application is mapped. We are interested to determine the sequence and size of the time slots within the Major Frame on each processor such that both the safety-critical and non-critical applications are schedulable. We have proposed a Simulated Annealing-based approach to solve this optimization problem. the proposed algorithm has been evaluated using several synthetic and real-life benchmarks.

Nowadays, there are many protocols able to cope with process crashes, but, unfortunately, a process crash represents only a particular faulty behavior. Handling tougher failures (e.g. sending omission failures, receive omission failures, arbitrary failures) is a real practical challenge due to malicious attacks or unexpected software errors. this paper proposes a component-based methodology allowing to take a protocol A resilient to crash failures and to add software components, namely liveness and safety failure detectors, in order to adapt the protocol A to be resilient to more general failures than crashes, without changing the code of A. then, the feasibility of this approach is shown, by providing an implementation of liveness failure detectors and of safety failure detectors for a protocol solving the problem of global data computation

System execution traces are useful artifacts for validating distributed system quality-of-service (QoS) properties, such as end-to-end response time, throughput, and service time. With proper planning during development phase of the software lifecycle, it is possible to ensure such traces contain required properties to facilitate analysis for QoS validation. In some case, however, it is not possible to ensure system execution traces contain the necessary properties for QoS analysis. this paper presents the System Execution Trace Adaptation Framework (SETAF) for adapting system execution traces to support analysis of QoS properties. It also presents results from applying SETAF to externally developed applications. the results show that it is possible to validate QoS properties by automatically adapting system execution traces at analysis time instead of modifying the application's existing source code.
