Publish/subscribe middleware is being increasingly used to devise large-scale critical systems. Although several reliable publish/subscribe solutions have been proposed, none of them properly address the problem of assuring message dissemination even if network omissions happen without breaking any temporal constraints. In order to fill this gap, we have investigated how to guarantee a resilient and timely event dissemination despite of message losses. the contribution of this paper is on proposing a FEC approach, where encoding functionality is placed at the root and on a subset of interior nodes in the multicast tree, combined to a gossiping algorithm. Simulation-based experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach allows all the interested subscribers to receive all the published messages and the adopted resiliency mean does not affect the timeliness of the multicast protocol.

Testing Web services performance and their Fault Tolerance Mechanisms (FTMs) are crucial for the development of today's applications. Testing the performance and FTMs of composed service systems is hard to measure at design time because service instability is often caused by the nature of the network. Using a real internet environment for testing is difficult to set up and control. We have developed a fault injection toolkit that emulates a WAN within a LAN environment between composed service components and offers full control over the emulated environments in addition to the ability to inject network-related and application specific faults. the tool also generates background workloads on the tested system for producing more realistic results. We describe an experiment that has been carried out to test the impact of fault tolerance protocols deployed at a service client by using our fault injection toolkit.

Recent years have witnessed the emergence and rapid growth of distributed service infrastructures such as mobile ad hoc networks, P2P, PlanetLab and Grids. In such distributed infrastructures, an entity needs to utilize the services provided by other entities or the infrastructures, where trust is an important factor. there exists a gap between current trust research focusing limitedly on specific applications and a systematic, adaptable and customizable trust framework. the first limitation of current research is the lack of characterizing service-specific trust features. the second limitation lies in the restricted evaluation formulae of trust values. the trust value formulae are usually drawn from a particular mathematical model and may not satisfy some desirable properties. the third limitation is the lack of flexibility and adaptability of trust models. In this paper a comprehensive trust model is presented to address these limitations and provide a trust-based environment for distributed service infrastructures. Our simulation results demonstrate the robustness of the trust model against various attacks.

AUTOSAR (Automotive Open System Architecture) is enjoying increasing interest and broad acceptance in the automotive domain. AUTOSAR aims at defining an open standardized software architecture to face future challenges in automotive development including the development of time-critical systems (e.g. brake-by-wire or steer-by-wire). Mastering the development of such systems requires being able to analyze their real-time behavior. Scheduling analysis is the theory that studies how far a real-time system may satisfy its real-time requirements against its real-time properties. In this paper, we will study to what extent it is possible to apply some of those scheduling analysis techniques on real-time systems deployed on AUTOSAR-compliant architectures. the paper focuses on scheduling analysis techniques implemented in one open source tool. A concrete case study shows the feasibility of the approach and shows scheduling analysis results.

In the recent years we have witnessed a proliferation of distributed stream processing systems that need to operate efficiently, even when data bursts occur. Examples include road traffic networks, processing of financial feeds, network monitoring and real-time sensor data analysis systems. An important challenge in managing these systems is effective resource management and meeting the QoS demands of the stream processing applications under different workload conditions, even under bursts. In this paper we present our approach that aims to predict the execution times of the distributed stream processing applications by taking into account the effects of the bursts and what is the typical workload of the stream processing system. Our approach builds application data rate patterns at run-time and predicts the effect of the burst on the performance of the applications, to identify whether there is a need to react on the onset of a burst. Our detailed experimental results over our Synergy middleware illustrate that our approach is practical, depicts good performance and has low resource overhead.

In service-based systems, services from various providers can be integrated following specific workflows to achieve users' goals. these workflows are often executed and coordinated by software agents, which invoke appropriate services based on situation changes. these agents need to be deployed on underlying platforms with respect to various requirements, such as access permission of agents, real-time requirements of workflows, and reliability of the overall system. Deploying these agents manually is often error-prone and time-consuming. Furthermore, agents need to migrate from hosts to hosts at runtime to satisfy deployment requirements. Hence, an automated agent deployment mechanism is needed. In this paper, an approach to automated agent deployment in service-base systems is presented. In this approach, the deployment requirements are represented as deployment policies, and techniques are developed for generating agent deployment plans by solving the constraints specified in deployment policies, and for generating executable code for runtime agent deployment and migration.

Embedded control systems such as automotive form large-scale distributed ones which consist of numerous CPUs and devices, including plants and various hardware components. the complexity of such systems has increased for sophisticated control using numerous types of sensor data. Meanwhile, market pressures lead to reducing development periods for the large-scale distributed embedded control systems. A model-based design becomes popular to solve the above problems, especially automotive industries. In this paper, we describe a wide-area distributed integrated test environment based on the model-based design. the key features are communication middleware to enable wide-area distributed test with integrating the programs in widely distributed sites and control program execution with models of multiple abstraction levels in the model-based design. Furthermore, we developed a model agent simulation. Instead of a plant model that might be located and simulated by MATLAB/Simulink in a remote site, a model agent behaves like the model in a local computer. the model agent simulation significantly reduces the test execution time in a prototype evaluation.

Agent-based modeling and simulation is a way to model the behavior of populations of components and their interactions within a system. the key of this approach is to model the components of the system as autonomous agents and to simulate their behavior for evaluating the system as a whole. that is very useful for observing the emergence of properties in social, biological, environmental or financial systems, among others. Artificial immune systems, which is a sub field of artificial intelligence, comprises systems modeled by simplifying models from the biological immune system. If agent-based modeling and simulation is used as a laboratory for understanding the biological immune system then, it can also be used for transferring the observed principles into artificial immune system models or for evaluating models that have been already adapted for solving technical problems. this paper presents first, a methodology for transferring principles of the biological immune system into the field of artificial immune systems. then, it presents a brief explanation of the behavior of the cells of the biological immune system, which are treated as internal agents inside a biological organism. Afterwards, the modeling of some selected type of cells and the simulation of the whole simplified system are presented. In the end, the principles of that simplified system are transferred into the design of an alarm management system for the smart grid. © 2012 ieee.

Achieving situation awareness is especially challenging for real-time data stream applications because they i) operate on continuous unbounded streams of data, and ii) have inherent real-time requirements. In this paper we show how formal data stream modeling and analysis can be used to better understand stream behavior, evaluate query costs, and improve application performance. We use MEDAL, a formal specification language based on Petri nets, to model the data stream queries and the Quality-of-Service (QoS) management mechanisms in a data stream system. MEDAL's ability to combine query logic and data admission control in one model allows us to design a single comprehensive model of the system. this model can be used to perform a large set of analyses to help improve the application's performance and QoS.

High-integrity systems are deployed in order to realize safety-critical applications. To meet the rigorous requirements in this domain, these systems require a sophisticated approach to design, verification, and certification. Not only safety consideration shave an impact on a product's overall dependability, but also security has to be taken into account. In this paper we analyze the time-Triggered System-on-Chip (TTSoC) architecture, which is a novel architecture for Multi-Processor System-on-Chip (MPSoC) devices, regarding its security properties. We discuss essential compliance criteria to the Multiple Independent Layers of Security (MILS) architecture, which is a industry-ready architecture for embedded high-integrity systems. We found that both architectures share intrinsic properties and we are able to show that the TTSoC architecture implements the core requirements of a MILS Separation Kernel and thus realizes its elementary security policies by design.
