A wireless sensor network (WSN) typically consists of a large number of small-sized devices that have very low computational capability, small amounts of memory and the need to conserve energy as much as possible (most commonly by entering suspended mode for extended periods of time). Previous approaches for WSN time synchronization do not satisfactorily address all of the requirements of WSN environments. thus, this paper proposes a new fault-tolerant WSN time sychronization algorithm that is extremely fast (when compared to previous algorithms), achieves a guaranteed level of time synchronization for all non-faulty nodes, can accommodate nodes that enter suspended mode and then wake up, utilizes very little communication and computation resources (thereby leaving those resources available for use by other applications), operates in a completely decentralized manner and tolerates up to f faulty nodes. the efficacy of the proposed algorithm is shown using analysis and experimental results.

Program codes running on the sensor nodes need to be updated from time to time to fix bugs, tune the parameters, insert new functions, or delete useless codes. In this paper, we propose a policy-based reprogramming framework that can optimize the reprogramming process based on the execution characteristics of modules that constitute the WSN applications. To accomplish this we model the characteristics of a module as a tuple of the following four criteria; region, residence, synchronization and real-time properties of the module. According to the class of a module and the type of a reprogramming operation, we adaptively use 3 different reprogramming techniques; efficient code dissemination using connected dominating set, selective code dissemination, and code acquisition. Experimentation results confirm that this policy-based reprogramming can achieve substantial improvement in both the energy consumption and the reprogramming latency compared to existing solutions for various reprogramming scenarios.

Performance analysis tools for enterprise distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems require instrumenting heterogeneous sources (such as application- and system-level hardware and software resources). Traditional techniques for software instrumentation of such systems, however, are tightly coupled to system design and metrics of interest. It is therefore hard for system testers to increase their knowledge base and analytical capabilities for enterprise DRE system performance using existing instrumentation techniques when metrics of interest are not known during initial system design. this paper provides two contributions to research on software instrumentation for enterprise DRE systems. First, it presents OASIS, which is service-oriented middleware for instrumenting enterprise DRE systems to collect and extract metrics without design time knowledge of which metrics are collected. Second, this paper empirically evaluates OASIS in the context of a representative enterprise DRE system from the domain of shipboard computing. Results from applying OASIS to a representative enterprise DRE system show that its flexibility enables DRE system testers to precisely control the overhead incurred via instrumentation.

Enabling message communication among concurrent computing threads without relying on mutual exclusion (i.e., locking) is highly desirable in real-time computing systems. this paper presents a refined version of the Non-Blocking Buffer (NBB), which is a lock-free interaction mechanism that enables efficient event-message communication between a single producer thread and a single consumer thread. the NBB scheme presented here contains improvements over the previous version in two aspects. First, application designers now have the flexibility of choosing the consumer's retry strategy for the case when the buffer is empty but the producer is in the middle of inserting an item. Second, in the refined version the producer inserts pointers to data items into the buffer whereas the consumer obtains copies of the items. this design is consistent with the fact that shared heap management must be avoided to enable fully lock-free interaction between the producer and the consumer. this paper also discusses the approaches based on the NBB mechanism for supporting all conceivable producer-consumer scenarios.

In this paper we present an approach for the self reconfiguration of distributed micro-controllers for increased fault tolerance. Based on a modified distributed system topology utilizing a time division multiple access (TDMA) protocol, i.e., Flex Ray, we present a self-organized distributed coordinator concept which performs the self-reconfiguration in the case of node failures. We introduce a distributed coordinator, which utilizes redundant slots in the Flex Ray communication schedule and combines messages in configured protocol frames and slots to avoid a complete bus restart. As such, the self-reconfiguration is realized by means of predetermined information about resulting changes in the communication dependencies and (re-)assignments determined in the design phase. To retrieve the necessary information, we present an analytical approach, which determines a combined solution for the initial configuration and all possible reconfigurations for the remaining nodes of the Flex Ray network in case of node failures. Hence, through this method we can design self-reconfiguring network-based systems enabling the handling of node failures for an increased fault tolerance.

Performance and reliability are two major design concerns of flash-memory storage systems, especially for low-cost products. Although various excellent flash- memory management schemes are proposed, there is little work done on how to evaluate the designs or implementations of flash-memory storage systems. Many of the existing evaluation workloads for flash-memory storage systems still rely on those based on hard disks. this work aims at the needs of behavior analysis of flash-memory storage systems and their evaluations. In particular, a set of evaluation metrics and their corresponding access patterns are proposed. the behaviors of flash memory are also analyzed in terms of performance and reliability issues.

In future inhomogeneous, pervasive and highly dynamic networks, end-nodes may often only rely on unreliable and uncertain observations to diagnose hidden network states and decide upon possible remediation actions. Inherent challenges exists to identify good and timely decision strategies to improve resilience of end-node services. In this paper we present a framework, called ODDR (Observation, Diagnosis, Decision, Remediation), for improving resilience of network based services through integration of self-adaptive monitoring services, network diagnosis, decision actions, and finally execution (and monitoring) of remediation actions. We detail the motivations to the ODDR design, then we present its architecture, and finally we describe our current activities towards the realization and assessment of the framework services and the main results currently achieved.

Sensor networks introduce a new application domain and set of challenges in distributed computing including new network-level programming languages, global system abstractions, and general-purpose communication protocols. these challenges are brought about by the tight integration of computation, communication, and distributed real-time interaction with the physical world. With the growing interest in interconnecting different sensor networks across a wide-area communication infrastructure, an overarching challenge becomes one of arriving at an agreed-upon global sensor network architecture that ensures interoperability. Unlike the Internet, where a layered communication stack (namely, the TCP/IP stack) defines the network architecture, a sensor network architecture must unify not only communication interfaces but also programming interfaces, since network communication and computation functions are tightly intertwined. In that sense, the sensor network architecture refers to a layered stack of distributed computing abstractions. this paper presents an architecture and key considerations in designing and interconnecting local and global sensor networks. Candidate protocols and middleware instantiations are described from the authors' ongoing work that meet the discussed considerations

Memory management in Safety-Critical Java (SCJ) is based on time bounded, non garbage collected scoped memory regions used to store temporary objects. Scoped memory regions may have different life times during the execution of a program and hence, to avoid leaving dangling pointers, it is necessary to check that reference assignments are performed only from objects in shorter lived scopes to objects in longer lived scopes (or between objects in the same scoped memory area). SCJ offers, compared to the RTSJ, a simplified memory model where only the immortal and mission memory scoped areas are shared between threads and any other scoped region is thread private. In this paper we present how, due to this simplified model, a single scope nesting level can be used to check the legality of every reference assignment. We also show that with simple hardware extensions a processor can see some improvement in terms of execution time for applications where cross-scope references are frequent. Our proposal was implemented and tested on the Java Optimized Processor (JOP).

Heterogeneous non-functional requirements of DRE system put a limit on middleware engineering; building an application-tailored middleware becomes a challenge. In this paper, we show how we use the PolyORB middleware and its architecture as a framework to implement DDS, the data distribution services (DDS) recently published by the OMG. We demonstrate how the architecture proposed by PolyORB enables a rapid implementation of this specification, and allows for extreme tailorability to support application requirements
