Due to the raising complexity in distributed embedded systems, a single designer will not be able to plan and organize the communication for such systems. therefore, it will get more and more important to relieve the designer in that task. Our idea is a communication system that is capable to organize itself to satisfy predefined properties. In this paper, we want to solve the problem of establishing fair bandwidth sharing on priority-based buses by using simple local rules on the distributed system to avoid a single point of failure and cope with online system changes. Based on a game theoretical analysis, a multi-agent reinforcement learning algorithm is proposed that establishes fair bandwidth distribution. the main idea is to penalize nodes that claim too much bandwidth by the other nodes. We experimentally evaluated the algorithm with different parameter settings. the algorithm showed to converge to a fair solution in any experiment. this means the system is able to completely self-organize without global information for our assumptions. In addition, we could figure out that we can configure a trade-off between convergence speed and computation effort. We hope this is a small first step towards totally self-organizing real-time systems.

the next generation of advanced mechatronic systems is expected to enhance their functionality and improve their performance by context-dependent behavior. therefore, these systems require to represent information about the complex environment and changing sets of collaboration partners internally. this requirement is in contrast to the usually assumed static structures for embedded systems. In this paper, we present a model-driven approach which overcomes this situation by supporting dynamic data structures while still guaranteeing that valid worst-case execution times can be derived. It supports a flexible resource management which avoids to operate with the prohibitive coarse worst-case boundaries but instead supports to run applications in different profiles which guarantee different resource requirements and put unused resources in a profile at other applications' disposal. By supporting the proper estimation of worst case execution time (WCET) and worst case number of iteration (WCNI) at runtime, we can further support to create new profiles, add or remove them at runtime in order to minimize the over-approximation of the resource consumption resulting from the dynamic data structures required for the outlined class of advanced systems.

Type-safe high-level languages such as Java have not yet found their way into the domain of deeply embedded systems, even though numerous attempts have been made to make these languages cost attractive. One major challenge that remains is the huge existing code base in many industries. Completely reengineering this code base is not viable for cost and time reasons. We present an approach that allows to isolatedly combine legacy software components and safe software components in an embedded system using the two most common communication idioms found in this domain. Our approach allows the developer to freely choose between hardware- and software-based isolation mechanisms. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach by porting a non-trivial part of a real-world, hard real-time embedded avionics application. Our results show that the cost of this mixed-mode operation is on the same scale as the pure operation.

Component based software development (CBSD) has been established in the development of automotive real-time embedded applications at Bosch. CBSD together with software product line (SPL) practice has improved software reuse, productivity, quality and complexity management, by raising the level of abstraction for software constructions and by sharing services. Although CBSD has contributed to the aforementioned improvement in the software development practice, the existing Bosch component model often requires software developers to take a close look at the implementation including models (e.g., ASCET-MD ) and even complex source code to understand software behavior and dependencies when reusing and adapting software components. this hinders the realization of the full benefits of CBSD, as the available information on the component level does not sufficiently describe important aspects of software behavior. this paper presents the concepts and case studies of 'signal flows' and 'mode dependent signal flows', which provide crucial software behavior information for real time embedded systems at the component level.

real-time, embedded and safety-critical systems have to meet some quality criteria in order to provide certain reliance on its operation. the quality of a system depends on the complex composition of the quality of its subsystems. Quality composability depends on matchmaking the provided and required quality specifications. To allow for flexibility during the system design, we study composability as a configuration problem. We allow options of quality specifications to represent design choices, deployment choices, operation modes or component adaptability. this kind of assessments of system architectures is very important e.g., for COTS development. the contributions of this paper are: to study the modeling requirements to model composability analysis, to compare two modeling approaches, and to show how a model-driven environment can leverage composability assessments. the two modeling approaches, QoS-FT + OCL and MARTE + VSL, are used to attach quality specifications to system models. However, our ultimate goal is to evaluate these specifications, and we have implemented tool-support to evaluate composability using constraint satisfaction techniques.

In this paper, we study the energy minimization problem for a frame-based real time system with guaranteed reliability using the checkpointing technique. We formally prove that executing a real time task set with a uniform frequency, or neighboring frequencies if the desired frequency is not available, not only optimizes its energy consumption but also achieves maximal reliability. Based on the theoretic conclusion, we further develop a Dynamic Voltage Frequency Scaling (DVFS) and checkpoint allocation strategy for a task set to guarantee both reliability and deadline constraints but with minimal energy consumption. the proposed strategy has very small frequency switching overhead as no more than one frequency change is needed for the entire task set execution and thus is particularly effective for processors with large frequency switching overhead. We further empirically compare our approach with recent work published in the literature. the experimental results show that the proposed approach can reduce as much as 15% energy consumption.

the size and complexity of large-scale distributed embedded systems such as automotive and process controls have increased recently. Sophisticated systems that are safe and environmentally friendly require numerous types of sensor data, which are collected from various devices and sent to computers through networks. To develop such large-scale distributed embedded systems with high quality and productivity, we have developed a virtual execution environment platform. this platform integrates numerous CPU simulators and various device simulators through the network and provides network-wide simulation functionalities. In this paper, we propose a hybrid software execution environment and describe the development and evaluation of the technology element required in its implementation. the hybrid software execution environment integrates virtual and real software execution environments in order to check functional behavior of distributed embedded software in a more realistic environment. In the environment, CPU simulators and device simulators are implemented as Common object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) objects, and messages in the simulation objects are transferred at the actual rate in the target setting.

NAND flash memory becomes one of the most popular storage for portable embedded systems. Although many flash-aware file systems, such as JFFS2 and YAFFS2, were proposed, the large memory consumption and the long mount delay have been serious obstacles for large-capacity NAND flash memory. In this paper, we present a new flash-aware file system called DFFS (direct flash file system) which fetches only the needed metadata on demand from flash memory. In addition, DFFS employs two novel metadata management schemes, inode embedding scheme and hybrid inode indexing scheme, to improve the performance of metadata operations. Comprehensive evaluation results using microbench- mark, postmark, and Linux kernel compilation trace, show that DFFS has comparable performance to JFFS2 and YAFFS2, while achieving a small memory footprint and instant mount time.

the use of object-based programming techniques helps to reduce the cost of software development and maintenance, due to the benefits of reuse, information hiding and encapsulation. this is especially helpful in complex, real-time systems that are highly parallel and distributed, due to their magnitude. the paper presents a semi-preemption execution model of object-based real-time systems that simplifies reasoning about the quality of particular process-to-processor assignments. the model is used to define system properties such as inter-process parallelism, processor utilization and inter-processor communication. Additionally, we present an innovative assignment algorithm that incorporates feasibility constraints, and is guided by an objective that balances minimum communication against maximum parallelism. this work is part of a complete assignment and pre-run-time scheduling approach for distributed real-time systems.< >

Efficient resource search in large-scale unstructured peer-to-peer (P2P) systems remains a fundamental challenge. In order to improve search performance, interest-based search is a good way to tackle the challenge. However, the existing interest-based search algorithms pay attention to user interest model and search history, but ignore some influence factors of improving performance. In this paper, through analysis of node's multi-dimensional quality-of-service (QoS) for search, it is found that node state's information is essential for improving search performance. So a State-Based Search (SBS) strategy is presented by improving Sripanidkulchai's interest-based search model, where Node's state evaluation is based on node's QoS fuzzification. the SBS enhances the methods of shortcuts adding, ranking and selecting, and state's life-cycle is predicted by grey theory. the experimental results show that the SBS can improve performance by reducing search response time and achieving load balance.
