the paper presents a method for modeling real-time distributed systems and verifying their timing properties. As a modeling tool, communicating real-time state machines (CRSMs) (A.C. Shaw, 1992) are employed with modifications. For a system with a finite number of states, all of the possible execution paths of the system in CRSMs are constructed into a graph called timed reachability graph (TRG). Timing properties of the system are specified in event-based real-time temporal logic (ERL) (H.Y. Chen et al., 1993) and are verified against the timed reachability graph. A verification algorithm is designed. the contribution of the work is the construction of the timed reachability graph and the verification of timing constraints in ERL.< >

Smart phones are starting to find use in mission critical applications, such as search-and-rescue operations, wherein the mission capabilities are realized by deploying a collaborating set of services across a group of smart phones involved in the mission. Since these missions are deployed in environments where replenishing resources, such as smart phone batteries, is hard, it is necessary to maximize the lifespan of the mission while also maintaining its real-time quality of service (QoS) requirements. To address these requirements, this paper presents a deployment framework called Smart Deploy, which integrates bin packing heuristics with evolutionary algorithms to produce near-optimal deployment solutions that are computationally inexpensive to compute for maximizing the lifespan of smart phone-based mission critical applications. the paper evaluates the merits of deployments produced by Smart Deploy for a search-and-rescue mission comprising a heterogeneous mix of smart phones by integrating a worst-fit bin packing heuristic with particle swarm optimization and genetic algorithm. Results of our experiments indicate that the missions deployed using Smart Deploy have a lifespan that is 20% to 162% greater than those deployed using just the bin packing heuristic or evolutionary algorithms. Although Smart Deploy is slightly slower than the other algorithms, the slower speed is acceptable for offline computations of deployment.

As the foundation of cloud computing, Server consolidation allows multiple computer infrastructures running as virtual machines in a single physical node. It improves the utilization of most kinds of resource but memory under x86 architecture. Because of inaccurate memory usage estimate and the lack of memory resource management, there is much service performance degradation in data centers, even though they have occupied a large amount of memory. Furthermore, memory becomes insufficient for a physical server when a lot of virtual machines depend on it. In order to improve this, we present a dynamic memory scheduling system called DMSS, which can manage memory resources in server consolidation environments and allocate memory among virtual machines on demand. We have designed and implemented the corresponding memory scheduling policy based on Xen virtualization platform to enhance memory efficiency and achieve service level agreement. the benchmark shows that DMSS can make an accurate and rapid response to memory changes and save more than 30% physical memory with less than 5% performance degradation. DMSS actually brings in economic benefits to cloud service providers because more virtual machines can be accommodated at lower costs.

As recognition grows within industry for the advantages that can be gained through the exploitation of large-scale dynamic systems, a need emerges for dependable performance. Future systems are being developed with a requirement to support mission critical and safety critical applications. these levels of criticality require predictable performance and as such have traditionally not been associated with adaptive systems. the software architecture proposed for such systems takes its properties from the service-oriented computing paradigm and the communication model follows a publish/subscribe approach. While adaptive, such architectures do not, however, typically support real-time levels of performance. there is scope, however, for dependability within such architectures through the use of Quality of Service (QoS) methods. QoS is used in systems where the distribution of resources cannot be decided at design time. In this paper a QoS based framework is proposed for providing adaptive and dependable behaviour for future large-scale dynamic systems through the flexible allocation of resources. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the benefits of the QoS framework and the tradeoffs that occur between negotiation algorithms of varying complexities.

With the growing complexity of embedded systems software, high code quality can only be achieved using a compiler. Sophisticated compilers provide a vast spectrum of various optimizations to improve code aggressively w. r. t. different objective functions, e. g., average-case execution time (ACET) or code size. Due to the complex interactions between the optimizations, the choice for a promising sequence of code transformations is not trivial. Compiler developers address this problem by proposing standard optimization levels, e. g., O3 or Os. However, previous studies have shown that these standard levels often miss optimization potential or might even result in performance degradation. In this paper, we propose the first adaptive WCET-aware compiler framework for an automatic search of compiler optimization sequences which yield highly optimized code. Besides the objective functions ACET and code size, we consider the worst-case execution time (WCET) which is a crucial parameter for real-time systems. To find suitable trade-offs between these objectives, stochastic evolutionary multi-objective algorithms identifying Pareto optimal solutions are exploited. A comparison based on statistical performance assessments is performed which helps to determine the most suitable multi-objective optimizer. the effectiveness of our approach is demonstrated on real-life benchmarks showing that standard optimization levels can be significantly outperformed.

An increasing number of modern real-time systems and the nowadays ubiquitous multicore architectures demand the application of programming techniques for reliable and efficient concurrent synchronization. Some recently developed Compare-And-Swap (CAS) based nonblocking techniques hold the promise of delivering practical and safer concurrency. the ABA problem is a fundamental problem to many CAS-based designs. Its significance has increased with the suggested use of CAS as a core atomic primitive for the implementation of portable lock-free algorithms. the ABA problem's occurrence is due to the intricate and complex interactions of the application's concurrent operations and, if not remedied, ABA can significantly corrupt the semantics of a nonblocking algorithm. the current state of the art leaves the elimination of the ABA hazards to the ingenuity of the software designer. In this work we provide the first systematic and detailed analysis of the ABA problem in lock-free Descriptor-based designs. We study the semantics of Descriptor-based lock-free data structures and propose a classification of their operations that helps us better understand the ABA problem and subsequently derive an effective ABA prevention scheme. Our ABA prevention approach outperforms by a large factor the use of the alternative CAS-based ABA prevention schemes. It offers speeds comparable to the use of the architecture-specific CAS2 instruction used for version counting. We demonstrate our ABA prevention scheme by integrating it into an advanced nonblocking data structure, a lock-free dynamically resizable array.

the increase of computational power in embedded systems has allowed integrating together hard real-time tasks and rich applications. Complex SW infrastructures containing both RTOS and GPOS are required to handle this complexity. To optimally map system functionality to the hard-RT SW domain, to the general purpose SW domain or to HW peripherals, early performance evaluations at the first steps of the design process are required. Approximate timed co-simulation has been proposed as a fast solution for system modeling at early design steps. this co-simulation technique allows simulating systems at speed close to functional execution, while considering timing effects. As a consequence, system performance estimations can be obtained early, allowing efficient design space exploration and system refinement. To achieve fast simulation speed, the SW code is pre-annotated with time information. the annotated code is then natively executed, performing what is called native-based co-simulation. Previous native-based simulation environments are not prepared to model multi-OS systems, so the performance evaluation of the different SW domains is not possible. this paper proposes a new embedded system modeling solution considering dual RTOS/GPOS systems. A real Linux-based infrastructure has been modeled an integrated into a state-of-the-art co-simulation environment. the resulting solution is capable of modeling and evaluating all HW and SW system components providing the designer with valuable information for early system optimization and design space exploration.

the paper introduces the RTM task graph model. RTM is a distributed operating system and scheduler for complex real time tasks developed at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, with a medium grained data flow model of computation. Tasks are linearly segmented (possibly with loops), but have arbitrary interconnectivity. this allows for decomposable tasks while avoiding the complications of a full fledged hierarchical model, simplifying scheduling, resource allocation. Our description of the task graph model in RTM can largely also be viewed as a list of desirable characteristics of any task graph based environment for real time design and implementation.

In the present work, we propose a mechanism that describes a system based on an IoT context ontology description. this mechanism is based on the creation of semantic Web services to identify objects in IoT systems. Our work aim to semantically describe IoT objects and find them. We are looking to propose an approach that describe each category of contextual information separately and ensure adaptation in the IoT system to overcome the problems of heterogeneity, interoperability, and data interpretation. this semantic approach is described by ontologies.

this study investigates the presence of illicit information flows in fixed-priority multiframe real-time systems. We identify an algorithmic covert channel (called FrameLeaker) that enables a low-priority task to deduce the execution patterns (frames) of a high-priority task. We show that the response time of a targeted low-priority task (receiver) can be used to extract the execution behavior of a high-priority task (sender). We further introduce a metric called "inference precision ratio" to evaluate the efficacy of the received information.
