Preemption threshold scheduling (PTS) provides prominent benefits for fixed priority scheduling such as increased schedulability, reduced context switches, and decreased memory requirements. Since such benefits allow for scalable real-time system design, we have adopted it into our automatic implementation synthesis method for real-time object-oriented models. In this paper, we present the integration of real-time synchronization schemes into PTS. Specifically, we investigate how to integrate priority inheritance protocols into preemption threshold scheduling such as the basic priority inheritance protocol and the priority ceiling protocol. In our integrated schemes, (1) the preemption threshold, instead of the priority, of a blocked task is inherited when blocking occurs;and (2) priority ceiling, instead of preemption threshold ceiling is used. We also show, that our integrated schemes can minimize worst-case context switches and thus is appropriate for the implementation of real-time object-oriented design models.

In self-adapting embedded real-time systems, operating systems and software provide mechanisms to self-adapt to changing requirements. Autonomous adaptation decisions introduce novel risks as they may lead to unforeseen system behavior that could not have been specified within a design-time model. However, as part of its functionality the operating system has to ensure the reliability of the entire self-x system during run-time. In this paper, we present our work in progress for an operating system framework which aims to identify anomalous or malicious system states at run-time without a sophisticated specification-time model. Inspired by the Artificial Immune Systems Danger theory, we propose an anomaly detection mechanism that operates not only on the local system behavior information of the monitored component. Furthermore, to ensure an efficient behavior evaluation, the anomaly detection mechanism implies system-wide input signals that indicate e.g the existence of a potential danger within the overall system or the occurrence of a system adaption. Due to the ability of this framework to cope with dynamically changing behavior and to identify unintended behavioral deviations, it seems to be a promising approach to enhance the run-time dependability of a self-x system.

Often, the advantages attainable by object oriented programming cannot be realised due to the widespread use of inadequate languages in the domain of real time and distributed systems. Meeting the needs of these areas to an unmatched extent, it is advocated for employing PEARL as base language, and its extension PEARL* for object oriented software development. this paper mainly focuses on supporting software engineering for safety related embedded systems. To this end, appropriate subsets of PEARL and PEARL* are defined meeting the requirements of the Safety Integrity Levels 1, 2 and 3, respectively. It is possible to combine code associated with different Safety Integrity Levels in a transparent way, assuring that the critical parts respect some safety rules, but allowing other uncritical parts of a system to be implemented in more comfortable ways.

this paper discusses the software architecture of a real-time CORBA object request broker (ORB) called ZEN, written in real-time Java, which is designed to eliminate common sources of overhead and non-determinism in ORB implementations. We illustrate how ZEN can be configured to select the minimal set of components used by an application. Our experience with ZEN indicates that combining real-time Java with real-time CORBA is a major step forward towards simplifying the development and maintenance of distributed middleware and applications with stringent quality of service requirements.

Software instrumentation is an important aspect of software-intensive distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems because it enables real-time feedback of system properties, such as resource usage and component state, for performance analysis. Although it is critical not to collect too much instrumentation data to ensure minimal impact on the DRE system's existing performance properties, the design and implementation of software instrumentation middleware can impact how much instrumentation data can be collected. this can indirectly impact the DRE system's existing properties and performance analysis, and is more of a concern when using general-purpose software instrumentation middleware for DRE systems. this paper provides two contributions to instrumenting software-intensive DRE systems. First, it presents two techniques named the Standard Flat-rate Envelope and Pay-per-use for improving the performance of software instrumentation middleware for DRE systems. Secondly, it quantitatively evaluates performance gains realized by the two techniques in the context the Open-source Architecture for Software Instrumentation of Systems (OASIS), which is open-source dynamic instrumentation middleware for DRE systems. Our results show that the Standard Flat-rate Envelope improves performance up to 57% and the Pay-per-use improves performance up to 49%.

To cope with the increasing design complexity of modern embedded real-time systems, Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) techniques are being proposed and applied within the domain of embedded and real-time systems. this paper discusses a design approach that combines MDE and concepts of the Aspect-oriented Software Development (AOSD) to deal with functional and non-functional requirements in a modularized way using higher abstraction levels. this approach covers activities from requirements engineering to the implementation phases, allowing early verification and simulation of system specifications. the proposed MDE approach is supported by a set of CASE tools. A configurable tool for code generation is capable of creating source code for different target platforms from the models produced in earlier design phases. Besides generating code for functional requirements handling, the tool also weaves aspects' adaptations, which modify the generated code to handle non-functional requirements. Furthermore, a tool to execute automatically a set of test cases is used to simulate and exercise the system behavior already in the specification and modeling phase. this tools allows engineers to verify if the system model is being specified according to the requirements, identifying whether the functional requirements are being fulfilled. the proposed approach has been successfully applied to the development of embedded real-time systems for different real-world applications. Obtained results show an improvement concerning the modularization of system's requirements handling, leading to an increased reuse of previously created artifacts.

the application of new technologies and programming tools represents a challenge and an economic risk for companies, which not all are prepared to assume. this paper presents the application of RT-CORBA in the development of software for Nuclear Power Plant Simulators used for the training of future operators in a safe way. the developed software has allowed the adaptation of previous simulation software to new methodologies and standards;and the creation of new applications, aiming at the building of reusable components with real-time constraints in future projects.

We present the modeling and analysis of distributed autonomous robots using the specification language for hybrid systems, called CHARON. Coordination between distributed autonomous robots has attracted researchers of embedded and hybrid systems, since there has been increasing demand for multiple robots working together in a dynamically changing or unknown environment to carry out missions such as search and rescue, cooperative localization, and scouting and reconnaissance. To maximize the capability of performing tasks collaboratively as a team, formation control is one of crucial parts in developing distributed autonomous robots. In this paper formation control of a team of robots is modeled using CHARON and the model is analyzed using simulation with assertion checking capability of the CHARON toolset.

the distributed real-time Specification for Java (DRTSJ) is being developed under Sun's Java Community Process. It is focused on supporting predictable, end-to-end timeliness for sequentially distributed computations (e.g., chains of invocations) in dynamic distributed object systems. this paper reports on an investigation to integrate and extend the existing real-time Specification for Java and Java's Remote Method Invocation facility to provide the basis for the DRTSJ.

In recent years, the Unified Modeling Language (UML) has received increasing attention from designers of real-time systems. Several approaches apply and enrich the UML notation for modeling of real-time applications. In addition to that, UML modelers can make use of the object Constraint Language (OCL) to restrict their models by additional constraints. Currently, OCL and real-time extensions of the UML only provide limited means to express temporal constraints. In particular, OCL lacks sufficient means to specify, constraints over the dynamic behavior of a UML model, i.e., the evolution of states and state transitions as well as time-bounded constraints. However it is essential to be able to specify such constraints for real-time systems to guarantee correct system behavior. We argue for a consistent extension of OCL that enables modelers to express state-related time-bounded constraints.
