Java-RMI is a well-known distribution middleware framework that allows the invocation of remote methods. this paper describes the extension of Java-RMI model to make the remote method calls time predictable. We identify the problems of the jdk implementation of RMI and propose solutions to implement the Java-RMI extended model. this extended model and the proposed solutions are based on the Java and CORBA real-time extensions and especially on network resource reservation protocols. these extensions provide services for the network resources negotiation and to limit the latency of RMI services. the proposed solutions can be integrated in jdk1.2 RMI implementation, using the Java real-time package and RSVP implementations.

the Imprecise Computation technique has been proposed as an approach to the construction of real-time systems that are able to provide both guarantee and flexibility. this paper analyzes the utilization of Imprecise Computation in the scheduling of distributed real-time applications. First we discuss the main problems associated with that goal, and we define a task model suitable to distributed environments. then, this paper presents an approach to the scheduling of distributed imprecise tasks. Finally, we describe specific scheduling algorithms to be used within the proposed approach.

For a long time embedded real-time systems have been designed as far as possible in a static manner. this means that they have been treated as pre-designed, off-line analysed, off-line mapped onto target systems, supported by customized but at run-time static real-time operating systems (RTOS), running on pre-assigned HW platforms. In this contribution some arguments for introducing more dynamics into real-time applications are given. Such dynamics finally may result in so called Autonomic Systems. When building autonomic real-time systems, specific support is needed. In this contribution some examples for such support are provided: Modelling techniques for distributed, self-modifying real-time systems, self modifying real-time operating systems, and usage self-modifying HW platforms.

In a real-time distributed computing environment, security is critical to protect the system from unauthorized access especially since such systems are being used in time critical applications. Access Control mechanisms have been introduced during the last several decades and have offered a basic and powerful means for enforcing security. In this paper, we examine the concepts of the TMO (time Triggered Message Triggered object) scheme that provides guaranteed real-time services in a distributed object computing environment. We also examine access control mechanisms;such as the traditional model, the RBAC (Role-based Access Control) model and the UCON (Usage Control) model. the main contribution of this paper is applying the traditional, RBAC and UCON models to the TMO scheme in order to provide a secure real-time distributed environment.

Middleware designed for use in distributed real-time and Embedded (DRE) systems enable cost and development time reductions by providing simple communications abstractions and hiding operating system-level networking API details from developers. While current middleware technologies can hide many low-level details, designers must provide a static configuration for the system's underlying network in order to achieve required performance characteristics. this has not been a problem for many types of DRE systems where the configuration of the system is relatively fixed from the factory (e.g., aircraft or naval vessels). However for truly open systems (i.e., systems where end users can add or substract components at runtime) the standard static network configuration approach cannot guarantee that required performance will be met because network resource demands are not fully known a priori. Open systems with stringent performance requirements need middleware that can dynamically manage the underlying network configuration automatically in response to changing demands. Fortunately, recent trends in networking have resulted in a wide variety of networking equipment that expose a standardized low-level interface to their configuration via the OpenFlow protocol. In this paper we discuss how OpenFlow can be leveraged by DRE middleware to automatically provide performance guarantees. In order to make the discussion concrete, we describe the architecture of our prototype middleware MIDAS as well as the details of one example network resource management strategy. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach via performance assesment of a simple DRE application using our MIDAS and commerically available OpenFlow hardware.

this paper presents a memory management solution for distributed real-time Java. the proposed model is targeted at distributed applications that require to keep their internal state and that consume a bounded memory size in their operation. the aim is to provide an alternative to the garbage collector for distributed real-time systems and to avoid the penalties it introduces. the approach is based on the usage of scoped memory defined in the real-time Specification for Java (RTSJ). Our solution introduces constraints in the programming model and in the current distributed Java architecture. However, these are compensated by eliminating the dependency of the garbage collector in the end-to-end invocation and by achieving se cleaning with respect to the memory consumed by remote invocations.

Two recent standards have a great potential to impulse the use of object orientation in the development of real-time applications. the first is the real-time Specification for Java, consisting in an Application Programming Interface (API) for real-time object-oriented programming. the other is the emerging RT-UML standard, which addresses the specification of real-time requirements and time using extended UML diagrams. this work-proposes an approach for bridging the gap between the two emerging standards, aiming to provide a clear link between the modeled real-time constraints and the programming entities that provide their implementation. the main idea is to enhance the traceability as well as readability of timing constraints from a model-based requirements model to implementation. Relationships between the stereotypes and tags used to decorate the UML diagrams and their code representation are explained. An assessment of the benefits achieved using both standards as well are as some proposed enhancements are also discussed.

Autonomous adaptation in self-adapting embedded real-time systems introduces novel risks as it may lead to unforeseen system behavior. An anomaly detection framework integrated in a real-time operating system can ease the identification of such suspicious novel behavior and, thereby, offers the potential to enhance the reliability of the considered self-x system. However, anomaly detection is based on knowledge about normal behavior. When dealing with self-reconfiguring applications, normal behavior changes so that the knowledge base requires adaptation or even (re-)construction at runtime. the stringent restrictions of real-time systems in terms of runtime and memory consumption assign this task to be a really challenging problem. In this paper, we present our idea for online construction of application behavior knowledge that does not rely on any training phase. the applications' behavior is defined by the application's system call invocations. For the knowledge base, we exploit Suffix Trees as they offer potentials to represent application behavior patterns and their associated information in a compact manner. We apply the online algorithm provided by Suffix Trees as a basis to construct the knowledge base with low computational effort. However, we integrate anomaly detection and classification into the online construction method. We ensure thereby that new behavioral patterns do not unconditionally update the behavior knowledge base, but beforehand, have been evaluated in a context-related manner inspired by Danger theory, a special discipline of Artificial Immune Systems.

One of the problems with Java for real-time systems is the unpredictable behavior of garbage collection (GC). GC introduces unexpected load and causes widesirable delays for real-time applications. In this paper, we propose a technique that reduces and bounds the memory requirements for real-time Java programs. this technique can eliminate or reduce the need for GC and allows for a more predictable execution behavior and efficient utilization of the available memory. A theoretical model is presented and a number of benchmark tests are used to evaluate this technique in PERC, NewMonics' real-time JVM, and Sun's JVM the results show that in some cases GC can be eliminated and an application's execution time decreases and becomes more predictable.
