Edge map of an image contains a lot of information about objects in the image. that is why edge detection has been widely used in numerous imageprocessing and vision algorithms. Although there has been a lot of research on this topic, however, most of the practically used algorithms, like a Canny edge detector, still lack basic requirement of edge localization. If noise is to be removed by using a low pass filter then edges are blurred. Contrarily, if edges have to be preserved then noise severely corrupts the edge map. In this paper, we have proposed a new method of edge detection, Difference of BiGaussian (DoBG) edge Filter, which simultaneously removes noise from real life images, while generating well localized edges. We have presented detailed analysis of our operator using 1D and 2D signals. Moreover, experimental results on published data sets show the robustness and quality of our detector.

Locating an iris is important in an iris recognition system. Previous studies have shown good performance when an iris image is clear. However, if an iris image is occluded by eyelids, eyelashes and reflection, the accuracy and robustness of localization will decrease significantly. this paper proposed a new algorithm to locate an iris in a coarse-to-fine manner: firstly, a modified radial symmetry transform was used to find the possible pupil region; secondly, an enhanced circular integro operator was adopted to obtain the precise iris location. Experimental results on CASIA V3.0 iris database showed that proposed algorithm has a more accurate and robust performance than the previous methods, especially when occlusion of eyelids, eyelashes and reflection occurred. A real-time system was able to be achieved by the coarse-to-fine strategy as well.

A sign language is a language which uses visually transmitted sign patterns, instead of acoustically conveyed sound patterns, to deliver the meaning. Sign languages are typically constructed by simultaneous combination of hand shapes, orientations and movements of the hands, arms or body, with facial expressions to fluidly express a speaker's thoughts. this paper presents a less costly approach to develop a computervision based sign language recognition application in real time context with motion recognition. We explore new concepts of breaking down motion gestures to sub components for parallel processing and mapping motion data into static data representations. this concept can be used to identify sign language gestures, without performing computational intensive tasks of each and every frame captured. Moreover, sign language gestures can be evaluated with minimal imageprocessing and map the motion to linear/non-linear equations using functionalities proposed in this paper.

Especially on Today's LCD display panel and LED lighting device production, it can be applied to test and evaluate the quality of the display panel and lighting products. For the industrial applications such as bin picking, assembly and inspection, image understanding technology can be used to support those applications at real-time rates. Another area of applicability is that of automatic interpretation of aerial or satellite imagery for use in GPS or computer aided cartography. IC design for machine vision and image understanding is one of the most computationally intensive domains of artificial intelligence research. It requires that an interpretation of the changing scene be updated with every new video frame, once every thirtieth of a second. Withthree quarters of a million color-intensity data values which comprise the picture elements or pixels of the image, performing a single operation on each of these pixels requires an execution rate of about twenty-three million instructions per second for just to keep up withthe input. Of course far more than one operation per pixel is necessary. the image understanding is not limited to the data processing in the visible spectrum; it should have more applicable to computer aided systems for image signal processing such as avionics flight control, synthetic array radar and sonar systems etc... the bandwidth requirement of these systems is even higher. In order to achieve these enormous bandwidths a 3-D IC parallel processing design architecture and its algorithm will be discussed. this paper proposes a novel fast dehazing method based on dark channel prior. the dark channel prior is the phenomenon about normal outdoor images containing at least one low energy pixel around a block among three channels. It helps roughly estimating the air mediums thickness, which decreases the scene transmission. We propose a variation of optical model whose single atmospheric attenuation coefficient is replaced withthree different ones corresponding to each channel. In the past, the big sliding window of dark channel prior for calculating the transmission map inevitably resulted in unacceptable computing burden and has to be narrowed down. However, hue offset will be resulted if the size of sliding window is reduced. Our proposed method eliminates the offset while greatly reducing the processing time. then, a joint bilateral filter which replaces the original matting method is applied as our smooth measure to further refine the estimated transmission maps. Finally, we apply dehazing into driver assistance applications-lane and vehicle recognition. Robust lane recognition provides the information about if the input image to be fed into vehicle recognition should be conducted with dehazing to improve detecting rate.

We study surface reconstruction using a combination of anisotropic Gaussian filter and image segmentation technique -the minimum surface method. Anisotropic Gaussian filtering allows to manage a contrast between intensities of the discontinuity and the object in a desired direction. the minimum surface method detects properly outer boundaries even affected by boundary leakage in the vicinity of blurred edges. the algorithm is tested on a set of real 3D images of large corrosion cracks in stainless steel that initiated at the surface of the tested samples. this paper presents a real-time algorithm of accurately identifying helipad and estimating the state information for landing an unmanned aerial helicopter autonomously via computervision. the algorithm estimates the instantaneous attitude and position parameters of the helicopter relative to the helipad from continuously tracked points using the optical flow method. the vision system, consisting of a calibrated monocular camera, a helipad and an experiment platform, can perform imageprocessing, helipad recognition, feature extraction, target tracking and motion estimation. the experimental results show that the algorithm is accuracy, robust and fast.
