An iterative algorithm to minimize the non-quadratic cost functionals associated with Hopfield-like neural networks is shown to reach a stable state faster (with fewer iterations required) and also to extract a better edge map when applied to edge extraction by periodically reducing the value of the coefficients of the non-quadratic cost functionals associated with Hopfield-like neural networks. the impact of the changes in the initial coefficient values and the impact of different patterns of the periodic step-down have been studied.

A VLSI architecture is proposed for the realization of real-time 2D image filtering in an address-event-representation (AER) vision system. the architecture is capable of implementing any convolutional kernel F(x,y) as long as it is decomposable into x-axis and y-axis components, i.e. F(x,y)=N(x)V(y), for some rotated coordinate system {x,y}, and if this product can be approximated safely by a signed minimum operation. the proposed architecture is intended to be used in a complete vision system, known as the boundary-contour-system and feature-contour-system (BCS-FCS) vision model.

the emerging scheme (J.C. Rajapakse and F. Kruggel) is used to segment neuroanatomical structures in magnetic resonance (MR) head scans. Emerging is a region growing technique which is guided by the edgeness profile of the image. It is similar to the watershed algorithm (L. Vincent and P. Soille, 1991), but allows splitting of regions in catchment basins and merging at watershed boundaries. Region boundaries in MR head scans are fuzzy and compositions of tissues of some structures render varying intensity patterns. these characteristics and scanner limitations pose difficulties to unsupervised segmentation of MR head scans. We present emerging as a segmentation technique that overcomes these difficulties to produce reasonable segmentations of neuroanatomical structures.

We implement a rendering engine which has 7.1 GB/s bandwidth and 11.1 Mpolygon/s drawing speed. It has 3D rendering functions such as double buffering, smooth shading, alpha blending and depth comparison. It can convert 3D primitives into complete pixel data in every 90 ns. A serial access memory permits simultaneous memory access both for rendering operation and for screen refresh operation. the proposed virtual page mapping performs rendering operation without a page miss irrespective of the location of a polygon in the screen. Also, the partial word line activation and the sequential block activation can reduce the power consumption of 64 concurrent memory arrays to only 1.2 W.

TABS is a software framework designed to support research, development and evaluation of components and systems in image processing, computer vision and pattern recognition. It utilises a novel integration of the well-known Tcl/tk scripting language with a further software package ET to provide a software environment where systems can be developed in a seamless mixture of C/C++ and Tcl. In addition it integrates a user interface prototyping capability and a novel database abstraction, which enables systems to gain efficient access to any data generated during application execution. TABS runs under Unix/X-Windows, and Windows 95/NT, and is available in the public domain via the Internet.

Recent interest in virtual reality and multimedia has provided a great impetus to the development of automatic techniques for building graphical CAD/CAM models of objects and environments by sensing reality itself. the learning of models in this way is essential, particularly in terms of production times and attaining the required high fidelity needed for many applications Research has produced techniques for extracting full 3D shape models using a variety of sensors and a spectrum of techniques. these include the use of static video cameras, mobile video cameras (e.g. walk through video), multiple camera platforms and/or specialist active range sensors (typically based on laser striping or sonar). this paper introduces the principles and methodologies underlying several of these methods and presents algorithms and examples from systems representative of three major approaches: models from silhouettes, models from active range sensors and, finally, models from passive uncalibrated video sequences.

Mathematical morphology is the analysis of signals and images in terms of shape. Much is based on simple positive Boolean functions that are used to produce filters for binary and greyscale signals and images, In a recent development, the standard operators are applied to connected sets that form maxima and minima. these are new, powerful, general tools for analysing and representing images.

image processing is often considered a good candidate for the application of parallel processing because of the large volumes of data and the complex algorithms commonly encountered. this paper presents a tutorial introduction to the field of parallel image processing. After introducing the classes of parallel processing a brief review of architectures for parallel image processing is presented. Software design for low-level image processing and parallelism in high-level image processing are discussed and an application of parallel processing to handwritten postcode recognition is described. the paper concludes with a look at future technology and market trends.

Emerging trends in computer design attempt to include specific solutions for handling images also in general-purpose computers, because of the current spread of multimedia, image processing and computer graphics applications. In this context, this paper proposes hardware pre-fetching techniques specific for caching images: the main issue we state is that most algorithms working opt images exhibit a 2D spatial locality that is not taken into account in current cache organization and data access strategies. To this aim we propose an adaptive local pre-fetching for the image data type;this technique, mirroring the two-dimensional spatial locality of image processing algorithms, results to be more efficient than other approaches, such as sequential pre-fetching and adaptive pre-fetching. Performance is evaluated on different classes of image processing algorithms, namely raster-scan and propagative algorithms, common in computer vision and multimedia applications.

images have a very special role for humans in interpreting our world. Developments in image acquisition technology are enabling us to extend our visual faculties beyond the limitations of our physical presence and the resolving power of our eyes. this tutorial paper focuses on image acquisition technologies which give us insights that cannot be achieved at the wavelengths that we can perceive unaided. It aims to introduce two of the most rapidly developing and exciting areas in this field synthetic aperture radar imaging and tomographic medical imaging - each of which has the capacity to provide significant, but widely differing, benefits to mankind.
