Previous conferences took place in Palm Coast, Florida, USA (1993), Le Croisic, France (1996), Port Ludlow, Washington, USA (1999), Angra dos Reis, Brazil (2002), and Cambridge, UK (2005). the conference has its roots on the informal seminars organized by Professor J V Beck at Michigan State University, which were initiated in 1987. the organization of this conference, which took place in Dourdan (Paris) France, 15–19 June 2008, was made possible through a joint effort by four research departments from four different universities: LEMTA (Laboratoire de Mécanique théorique et Appliquée, Nancy-Université) LMS (Laboratoire de Mécanique des Solides, Ecole Polytechnique, Paris) LMAC (Laboratoire de Mathématiques Appliquées, UTC Compiègne) LTN (Laboratoire de thermocinétique, Université de Nantes) It received support from three organizations: SFT (Société Française de thermique: French Heat Transfer Association) ACSM (Association Calcul de Structures et Simulation : Computational Structural Mechanics Association) GdR Ondes – CNRS (`Waves' Network, French National Center for Scientific Research) the objective of the conference was to provide the opportunity for interaction and cross-fertilization between designers of inverse methods and practitioners. the delegates came from very different fields, such as appliedmathematics, heat transfer, solid mechanics, tomography.... We present a discrete approach for boundary extraction from 3D image data. the proposed technique is based on the duality between the Voronoi graph computed accross the digital boundary and the Delaunay triangulation. the originality of the approach is that algorithms perform only integer arithmetic and the method does not suffer from standard round problems and numerical instabilities in the case of floating point computations. this method has been applied both on segmented anatomical structures and on manufactured objects presenting corners and edges. the experimental results show that the method allows to produce a polygnal boundary representation which is guaranteed to be a 2-manifold. this representation is successfully transformed into a triangular quality mesh which meets all topological and geometrical requirements of applications such as augmented reality or simulation.

this paper investigates an inverse fault detection and diagnosis problem in discrete dynamic systems. the problem is how to adjust the system parameters according to observation value of inputs and outputs so that the system is concordant. First we formulate the problem as a least square problem with interval coefficients. then two algorithms for this problem are presented. the first algorithm based on the expected value of observation value of inputs and outputs. We are only required to solve a classical least square problem in this algorithm and the algorithm is robust. the second algorithm by using linear programming approach can deal with large scale systems and suit for on line adjustment.

Advance Reservations are important to guarantee the Quality of Services of Grid Jobs. However, the influence of AR from the Grid on local parallel schedulers is not clearly known. EASY backfill and Conservative backfill are two important parallel scheduling algorithms. this paper examined their procedures to support AR, evaluated their performances impacted from AR by using discrete event simulations with real trace from the parallel workload archive. Results show that as AR request increases, EASY backfill is preferable with higher utilization and lower average expansion factor and average weighted response time for both of local and AR Grid jobs. the use of conservative backfill typically provides both of local jobs and AR Grid jobs improved predictability and certainty, at the cost of lower utilization and degraded performance for both of local and AR Grid jobs.
