the paper presents a simple multivariate optimization algorithm for the maximum likelihood estimation of the direction-of-arrival of an acoustic source using a linear microphone array in the presence of multipath propagation. In the algorithm, a wideband acoustic signal is decomposed by the discrete Fourier transform, and then the optimal steering vectors are selected using an iterative process. At each iteration, the previously selected steering vectors are expanded, based on their corresponding signal energy coefficients. Subsequently, a new energy estimate is obtained from the previous one by the steepest-descent method under some constraints derived from practical assumptions. Finally, computer simulation results are presented to demonstrate its performance.

We propose a new blind image watermarking method in the discrete cosine transform (DCT) domain, which is widely used in compression applications and consequently in digital distribution networks. Four watermarking schemes are presented and experimentally analyzed, two of them use fixed parameters and the others are adaptive. the characteristics of human visual systems (HVS) are exploited in two adaptive watermarking schemes, so as to achieve high visual quality of watermarked image and robustness of watermarking. Moreover, the proposed algorithms can be easily implemented by existing software or hardware systems only with small modification.

the use of sonar systems is widely applied to detection of underwater targets. Conventional detection methods estimate the Doppler characteristics of an underwater target by processing the received signal in the frequency domain, for example by the use of the discrete Fourier transform and filter bank structures. We propose a robust scheme for estimation of the Doppler characteristics of an underwater target by employing nonlinear processes. Since the proposed method is processed in the time domain, it can significantly reduce the computational complexity. the proposed scheme can also be used for estimation of the velocity and distance of the target. the performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed and verified by computer simulation.

We propose a new wavelet intra-frame coding algorithm based on the information source partition theorem. the algorithm is motivated by the SPIHT (set partitioning in hierarchical trees) algorithm, but it is more efficient than the SPIHT codec and can also produce a completely embedded coding bit stream. Experimental results show that our algorithm is very suitable for very low bit-rate video coding. Compared with the H.263 intra-frame coding algorithm, our codec achieves a better reconstructed image than the H.263 intra-frame codec at the same compression ratio.

In this paper, a new coding algorithm designed for video surveillance is proposed. By use of the techniques such as context switch, inertia-based motion estimation, early-out DCT transform, region-based quantization and so on, this algorithm provides some attractive features for video surveillance. the developed algorithm supports multiple video channels, has error-resilience and alarming functions, and leads to high compression ratio. It is also sensitive to moving objects and feasible for browsing. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is more suitable than MPEG-1 for the application of video surveillance.

this paper proposes the design of a MPEG/H.26x based video encoder with significantly lower computational complexity than common video encoders require. the encoder design is well suited for video applications in a mobile environment, e.g. for MMS based video applications. In order to decrease the complexity, the structure of a standard encoder is divided into a real-time and a non-real-time based part. Furthermore, two simplified interframe processing approaches are proposed and compared in this paper.

the main shortcoming of the filtered-X LMS algorithm, which is widely used in a variety of active noise control (ANC) systems, is that its convergence behavior highly depends on the power spectrum or autocorrelation of the filtered reference signal. the more correlated the filtered reference signal is, the slower convergence speed the adaptive filter can achieve. the purpose of this paper is to introduce the transform domain adaptive filter (TDAF) into ANC to solve this problem. For the strongly correlated broadband signal, TDAF can achieve much faster convergence speed than LMS with relative low computational cost. A practical filtered-X DCT-LMS algorithm for ANC is also typically presented in this paper. Our experimental results with an ANC headset system prove the advantage of TDAF in ANC.

the paper proposes a new symmetric extension of the signal at boundaries for multiwavelet image compression. In practice, all image signals are of finite length, so they should be extended at boundaries before being processed with wavelets or multiwavelets. the most common way is periodization of the data, but it causes discontinuities at the boundaries that are not what we want. Symmetric extension of data can resolve this problem. the classical symmetric extension for GHM (Geronimo-Hardin-Massopust) multifilters (multiwavelet filter banks) requests that one input signal is even-length and the other is odd-length. Also, the quantity of the high frequency output data are more than the quantity of the low frequency ones, which is disadvantageous for data compression. We address a new algorithm to resolve these problems. the result of the experiments indicates that the energy distribution properties with this new algorithm are 6.3% more than those with classical symmetric extension and 11.8% more than those with periodization extension.

Constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) paradigm has proved highly successful for solving product configuration problems, particularly for build-to-order configuration in determining combination of different pre-defined component types. However, many real world customized products deal with engineer-to-order configuration, where product configuration is generated not only from combinations of different types of components, but also from varying different design parameters to satisfy pre-defined design constraints. the challenge posted by engineer-to-order configuration stems from n-ary constraints with continuous variables. Consequently, incorporating n-ary constraints and continuous variables into constraint satisfaction paradigm typically involves expensive search. therefore, effective search strategies along with a modeling approach supporting the search strategies are the main issues in solving engineer-to-order configuration. In this paper, we present an approach to engineer-to-order product configuration where configuration problems are represented as CSP with n-ary constraints and variables with both discrete and continuous domains. We extended CSP by introducing two types of variables, where controllable variables can be independently assigned with values and dependable variables are derived based on those controllable variables. By limiting it into a set of controllable variables, search space is considerably reduced, and therefore, search efficiency is significant improved. the search algorithm is based on repair strategy in which min-conflicts heuristic is applied along with backtracking search. A case study indicated that this approach could effectively solve engineer-to-order product configuration by reducing its search space.

Epileptic EEG often contains abnormal spiky activity which is diagnostically important. It is proposed that the multi-resolution wavelet transform with mathematical morphology can be used to detect and extract this activity. Differentiating the geometrical characteristics between spikes and normal EEG activity, the process extracts the target patterns from the EEG data in the multi-resolution domains. Morphological analysis utilizes analytic operations based on a pre-defined structuring element (SE) targeted to specific signal features. In our case the SE is defined as a disk to measure the difference in smoothness between the two components. discrete wavelet transforms are applied to construct the processed signal. the multi-resolution property of the wavelet transform adapts well to the time-invariant nature of the signal. Combining mathematical morphology and wavelet transforms, this method successfully separates the background activity and transient phenomenon from epileptic EEG. Although the morphological operation is a non-linear process, we show that, with the selected structuring element, this approach has ability to detect both positive and negative going spikes identically.
