Cloud and Fog technologies are steadily gaining momentum and popularity in the research and industry circles. Both communities are wondering about the resource usage. the present work aims to predict the resource usage of a machine learning application in an edge environment, utilizing Raspberry Pies. It investigates various experimental setups and machine learning methods that are acting as benchmarks, allowing us to compare the accuracy of each setup. We propose a prediction model that leverages the time series characteristics of resource utilization employing an LSTM Recurrent Neural Network (LSTM-RNN). To conclude to a close to optimal LSTM-RNN architecture we use a genetic algorithm. For the experimental evaluation we used a real dataset constructed by training a well known model in Raspberry Pies3. the results encourage us for the applicability of our method. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Code quality is a requirement for successful and sustainable software development. the emergence of Artificial Intelligence and data driven Machine Learning in current applications makes customized solutions for both data as well as code quality a requirement. the diversity and the stochastic nature of Machine Learning algorithms require different test methods, each of which is suitable for a particular method. Conventional unit tests in test-automation environments provide the common, well-studied approach to tackle code quality issues, but Machine Learning applications pose new challenges and have different requirements, mostly as far the numerical computations are concerned. In this research work, a concrete use of property-based testing for quality assurance in the parameter learning algorithm of a probabilistic graphical model is described. the necessity and effectiveness of this method in comparison to unit tests is analyzed with concrete code examples for enhanced retraceability and interpretability, thus highly relevant for what is called explainable AI. © 2020, IFIP international Federation for Information Processing.

this contribution addresses the application of Bayesian changepoint detectors (BCD) for the estimation of boundary location between speech units. A novel segmentation approach based on the family of Bayesian detectors using an instantaneous envelope and instantaneous frequency of speech rather than waveform itself is suggested. this approach does not rely on phonetic models, and therefore no supervised training is needed. No apriori information about speech is required, and thus the approach belongs to the class of blind segmentation methods. Due to the small percent of error in signal changepoint location, this method can be also used for tuning boundary location between phonetic categories estimated by other segmentation methods. the average bias between exact boundary location and its estimation is up to 7 ms for real speech. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

Orthognathic surgery is popular for patients with craniomaxillofacial (CMF) deformity. For orthognathic surgical planning, it is critical to have a patient-specific jaw reference model as guidance. One way is to estimate a normal jaw shape for the patient, by first searching for a normal subject with similar midface and then borrowing his/her (normal) jaw shape as reference. Intuitively, we can search for multiple normal subjects with similar midface and then linearly combine them as final reference. the respective coefficients for linear combination can be estimated, i.e., by sparse representation of patient’s midface by midfaces of all training normal subjects. However, this approach implicitly assumes that the representation of midface shapes is strongly correlated with the representation of jaw shapes, which is unfortunately difficult to meet in practice due to generally different data distributions of shapes of midfaces and jaws. To address this limitation, we propose to estimate the patient-specific jaw reference model in a coherent space. Specifically, we first employ canonical correlation analysis (CCA) to map the midface and jaw landmarks of training normal subjects into a coherent space, in which their correlation is maximized. then, in the coherent space, the mapped midface landmarks of patient can be sparsely represented by the mapped midface landmarks of training normal subjects. those learned sparse coefficients can now be used to combine the jaw landmarks of training normal subjects for estimating the normal jaw landmarks for patient and then building normal jaw shape reference model. Moreover, we also iteratively maximize the correlation between the midface and the jaw shapes in the new coherent space with a multi-layer mapping and refinement (MMR) process. Experimental results on real clinical data show that the proposed method can more accurately reconstruct the normal jaw shape for patient than the competing methods. © Springer international Publi

In recent years, positioning for simple static scenes has been unable to meet the requirements of people’s production and life. People want to achieve accurate positioning in practical scenarios such as airports, exhibition halls and stations. therefore, the research on visual SLAM positioning in complex dynamic scenes is increasing day by day. this article reviews the research results of SLAM positioning methods and visual SLAM positioning methods for complex scenes in recent years. Firstly, the development process of laser SLAM, visual SLAM, semantic SLAM and multi-sensor fusion is introduced, but the focus is on visual SLAM. Secondly, the paper summarizes the methods of moving object detection and visual SLAM localization in complex dynamic scenes. then the paper describes the development of deep learning and multi-sensor fusion in visual SLAM positioning based on complex dynamic scenes. Finally, the shortcomings of visual SLAM positioning methods based on complex scenes are summarized and the research prospects are prospected. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Direct estimation of rotation from two frames via epipolar search 6th

A direct method for estimating the rotational motion between two image frames is developed. the algorithm does not require knowledge of image correspondences, optical flow or scene structure and only assumes approximate knowledge of the translational motion. Spatial and temporal intensity gradients are avoided, resulting in an algorithm that is noise resistant. Moreover, the algorithm does not assume a particular projection model and is valid for both orthographic and perspective models. It is based on a statistical measure of epipolar misalignment. Specifically, that (1) the intensity histograms of corresponding epipolar lines are invariant (ignoring occlusions) and, more importantly, that (2) the histograms of "almost corresponding" epipolar lines are similar. this latter property is a function of the spatial correlation present in the image and it is empirically demonstrated to be well behaved over a large class of scenes. these epipolar properties of histograms, i.e. that the difference between two histograms is a minimum when the two epipolar lines truly correspond and (approximately) increases monotonically with the degree of misalignment between two "epipolar" lines, allows the rotational motion to be estimated in a straightforward manner as a 3-dimensional "epipolar search". Experimental results are presented on the SRI JISCT stereo database to empirically support the epipolar properties of intensity histograms. the calibrated NASA helicopter flight sequence is then analyzed to quantify the accuracy with which the rotations can be estimated. Experimental results indicate that very precise rotational estimates can be achieved. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1995.

In this paper, on two-dimension unstructured meshes, a fully-discrete scheme is presented for the reaction-diffusion systems, which are often used as mathematical models for many biological, physical and chemical applications. By using local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method, the scheme can derive the numerical approximations not only for solutions but also for their gradients at the same time. In addition, the scheme employs the implicit integration factor (IIF) method for temporal discretization, which allows us to take the time-step as delta t = O(h(min)), and can be computed element by element, so that it reduces the computational cost greatly. Numerical simulations for the chlorite-iodide-malonic acid (CIMA) model demonstrate the expected behavior of the solutions, the efficiency and advantages of the proposed scheme.

the problem of diagnosing Pima Indian Diabetes from data obtained from the UCI Repository of Machine Learning Databases[6] is handled with a modified Support Vector Machine strategy. Performance comparison with previous studies is presented in order to demonstrate the proposed algorithm's advantages over various classification methods. the goal of the paper is to provide the grasp of a methodology that can be efficiently used to raise classification success rates obtained by the use of conventional approaches such as Neural Networks, RBF networks and K-nearest neighbors. the suggested algorithm divides the training set into two subsets: one that arises from the joining of coherent data regions and one that comprises of the data portion that is difficult to be clustered. Consequently, the first subset is used to train a Support Vector Machine with a RBF kernel and the second subset is used to train another Support Vector Machine with a polynomial kernel. During classification the algorithm is capable of identifying which of the two Support Vector Machine models to use. the intuition behind the suggested algorithm relies on the expectation that the RBF Support Vector Machine model is more appropriate to use on data sets of different characteristics than the polynomial kernel. In the specific study case the suggested algorithm raised average classification success rate to 82.2% while the best performance obtained by previous studies was 81% given by a fine tuned highly complex ARTMAP-IC model.
