A modern large-scaled aircraft consists of numerous structural and system components. many of those components are installed and tested in the final assembly stage. To design the aircraft final assembly processes, engineers are required to have a comprehensive understanding of the interdependences and interactions between all the aircraft components, and the following influence to manufacturing operations. this work is difficult and challenging due to final assembly design activities lie in both product design and operations management fields. Final assembly processes link to product and operations constraints, thus a process-oriented method is required. Aircraft as a typical system of systems, systems engineering framework, for instance the V model, is used to understand the product complicities and guide the product design activities. However, there is no such a framework for final assembly line (FAL) process. this research investigates the activities of aircraft integrations at final assembly stage, then introduces a framework following systems Engineering (SE) principles for integrating FAL design activities. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

When the airborne infrared imaging system searches and strikes ground targets, it is mainly used to extract target information from complex background interference images on the ground and transmit it to the driving or automatic guidance system, forming the position and motion information of the missile relative to the target, in order to better track the target and output information to control the missile's flight. the airborne infrared imaging system detects, recognizes, and the tracking performance is closely related to the infrared radiation characteristics of the background. this article focuses on the research of multi band characteristics of military application targets and backgrounds. On the basis of unified standards, a database management system is established to meet the management and query functions of measured infrared characteristics data of typical backgrounds such as deserts, grasslands, mountains, and forests in different seasons and at different times, as well as the development of an infrared imaging detection performance evaluation system, We studied the detection and recognition probabilities of infrared imaging systems for targets at different distances in different background environments, and provided theoretical calculation results for the detection range of a certain type of installed airborne infrared imaging detection system for 2m * 2m sized targets in the 3.7μm-4.8μm band at 9:00, 16:00, and 21:00 in a summer grassland background in a certain area. this provides support for the design and development of infrared imaging weapons and equipment. © 2024 SPIE.

Purpose - this paper aims to present the findings of a systematic literature review on performance measurement systems (PmSs) for power distribution companies. design/methodology/approach - the research design is systematic literature review applying a search string in the Scopus scientific index, analysing the gathered data using bibliometric analysis, and developing a content analysis in a specific set of articles that adhere to the PmS. Findings - the authors’ keywords reveal the research interests moving from Data Envelopment Analysis application to Balanced Scorecard implementation until recently to applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning associated with some aspects of performance. the findings also reveal a lack of seminal authors and a fragmented publication landscape, suggesting the field's nascent maturity. Additionally, the systematic review identifies a gap in frameworks that effectively address the complex demands of stakeholders in the power distribution sector, indicating a significant opportunity for future research to develop tailored PmS frameworks. Research limitations/implications- the main implication is the necessity of developing more investigation on the issue in the field and researchers’ interests moving from company’s performance to specific facets of performance in power distribution companies. Research in the field could benefit from the knowledge of the performance measurement systems domain. Practical implications - Practitioners can identify their interests in the literature quickly. Originality/value - No systematic literature review on performance measurement systems for electricity distribution companies were observed in the literature. © 2024 Universidade do minho. the implementation of expansion projects of water networks supplying growing cities is deemed to be a complex decision-making problem involving both technical aspects and expert knowledge. management and control processes must rely on experts in the field whose knowhow must be coupled with techniques able to deal with the natural subjectivity that affects input evaluations. Given the presence of many decision-making elements, the choice of proper hydraulic technical parameters may be linked to the main aspects of analysis requiring formal expert evaluation. In this contribution, the simulation of hydraulic indicators is integrated with a multi-criteria approach able to eventually determine those areas of a water network through which organising the expansion may be more beneficial. the software EPAnet 2.0 is first used for hydraulic simulations, whereas the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) will eventually rank network's nodes. A case study is solved to demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed approach. Copyright (C) 2021 the Authors.

the growth of data traffic and the demand for new services are two of the main challenges to take into account in the design of next-generation networks. Service Function Chaining (SFC) is a technique that allows the execution of advanced services, routing network traffic through an ordered list of virtual functions. this mechanism is getting great relevance due to the rise of Software-defined Networks (SDNs) and the use of Network Function Virtualization (NFV), as well as the offered possibilities in terms of flexibility and automation. Given the existing need for operators to offer low latency services in 5G networks, the composition of this chain is a critical process that affects the performance of these services. Inside this context, this paper presents the design and implementation of an Ant Colony Optimization algorithm (ACO) for the minimization of the routing cost of service chain composition. ACO is a specially designed metaheuristic to work with weighted graphs, also considering restrictions, as is the case of the addressed problem. To test the value of the implemented algorithm, two different instances have been solved. the first one (with only 6 nodes) is a proof of concept, which easily allows to analyze the obtained solutions. the second one (19 nodes) models a medium-size 5G network, and tries to show the performance of this method in a wider graph. the results show that the proposed algorithm can lead to optimal solutions in many cases, even in a short time (less than 0.5 seconds) in the largest instance, so we consider this method as a very promising solution in this field.

Dependability - a measure of a system's availability, reliability, its maintainability and safety systems, is an integral part of the integrity of engineering design. From a functional perspective, dependability assumes satisfying some of the required functions and implies the correct definition of them. thus, in the case of complex equipment, multi-variable functions can be generated whose variables are dependent on different states and operating modes. In recent years, automated continuous design techniques have been developed through intelligent computational methodologies to determine the dependability of systems. these techniques also introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) in integrity engineering design and offer an overview and modelling in designing for reliability, availability, maintainability and system security. this paper combines quantitative research, mathematical and algorithmic modelling with evolutionary techniques. the combination of the four research techniques is done in a coherent application validated on a mechanical device and applicable to a wide range of technical systems. more specifically, the work proposes a comparative study of mathematical - linear and nonlinear models for correlation and optimization of maintainability and reliability values in relation to production and quality policies. these models will be complemented with specific AI techniques: neural and genetic algorithms that validate and optimize mathematical models. It identifies the metrics for the evaluation of the dependent variables (reliability, maintainability) and an independent variables (production and quality), these variables are observed over a given time horizon, their mathematical, neural and genetic modelling is performed to achieve correlations, optimization functions and model validation. the study proves to be a practical and applicative tool in the analysis of system integrity in general and operational safety, especially with a large generalization capac

EDF and AREVA NP have launched in 2015 the Basic design of a new Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) called EPR Nm, a generation 3 NPP, evolution of EPR, aiming at being a competitive product for the French NPP fleet renewal. Recent developments in science and technology have resulted in many advances in our daily lives and societal conditions. these developments led to increasingly complex engineering systems that tackle a wide range of societal needs. However, these also demand a broader skill-set for each engineer working with these systems and his/her training must span a greater range than that available in conventional engineering curricula. In order to deal with complex engineering systems, an engineer needs to have a good grasp of various technical fields such as computing, electrical, and mechanical engineering as well as competence in soft skills and systems thinking skills. this paper presents our multidisciplinary and project-based approach to impart these skills to our engineering students. the module consists primarily of conceive, design, implement and operate (CDIO) elements and aims to link diverse fields of engineering as well as developing the soft skills and systems thinking skills of our students. It is a year-long component of our Diploma in Engineering systems course and it is offered in the second year of the curriculum in order to invoke these skills earlier in each student's professional life. the design and implementation process in this module integrates various fields and skill-sets, giving students a realistic experience in dealing with engineering systems. Before embarking on this module, students have already gained plenty of hands-on experience and project management skills through other project based modules such as Introduction to Engineering and Engineering Prototyping in their first year. this paper will present details of this module and its implementation together with our preliminary evaluations and observations.
