internet of things (IoT) technology is increasingly prevalent across various sectors, including the military and healthcare. IoT devices play a pivotal role in collecting and analyzing crucial data while executing assigned tasks. Given the sensitive nature of this data, access control in IoT is crucial for data protection, and regulating the accessibility of data, applications, and resources. Yet, conventional centralized access control mechanisms are not well-suited to the dynamic IoT environment. the decentralized and distributed nature of distributed Ledger technology (DLT) presents a promising solution due to its high degree of transparency. this paper investigates various DLT-based access control models, presenting their distribution levels based on access control functional points and evaluating their capabilities using a predefined set of criteria. Upon defining a set of criteria for assessing DLT-based access control models within the IoT, it was observed that only two publications can be classified as highly distributed based on functional points. Furthermore, the assessment revealed that no model possesses both a highly distributed architecture and a highly distributed functional point distribution level simultaneously. this highlights the need for further development of distributed, scalable, and flexible access control models that align with the characteristics of the internet of things. this may involve integrating additional functional points into the chain and implementing smart contracts. © 2024 IEEE.

the internet of things (IoT) has emerged over the last few years as an intriguing and promising paradigm that is expanding quickly and opening a wide range of applications for humanity. Due to the low power, lossy, and resourcelimited nature of IoT devices, an effective routing protocol is very essential for which the Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Network (RPL) was standardized by the internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) as RFC6550 in 2012. A path-constructingmethod termed as objective function (OF) is used inRPL to optimize the routing paths considering different metrics. the two standard objective functions used in RPL are Minimum Rank with Hysteresis Objective Function (MRHOF) and Objective Function Zero (OF0). To determine if the algorithm is appropriate for a variety of dynamic scenarios in IOT, this work focuses on performance analysis of RPL utilising thetwo-objective function. Network Convergence Time, Power Consumption, Control Overhead, Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR), and Latency are the measures used to evaluate the protocol's performance. According to the findings, MRHOF provides superior network quality performance than OF0.

Blockchain technology is a distributed ledger system designed to securely process and store data. Although it offers several advantages when the number of participants increased, bolckchain will suffer from significant scalability challenges, such as the case of internet of things (IoT) networks. To address the specific needs of IoT, it is necessary to redesign consensus mechanisms and block formation processes. In this paper, we introduce Synopsis, an innovative hierarchical blockchain framework. Synopsis introduces a wireless-optimized Byzantine chain replication protocol and a novel probabilistic data structure. Both are designed to enhance locality and hierarchy, thereby improving system reliability and performance. We implemented Synopsis and evaluated its performance through extensive simulations and real-world testbed experiments. Our findings show that Synopsis effectively reduces the memory usage from Megabytes to just a few Kilobytes, achieving a 1000 time improvement. Synopsis also significantly decreases message complexity by 85% and commitment delay by 99.4%. © 2024 IEEE.

With the rise of IoT and cloud computing, DDoS attacks have become increasingly harmful. this paper presents a survey of techniques for detecting and preventing DDoS attacks, specifically focusing on Shrew DDoS or low-rate DDoS attacks. We explore the use of machine learning for DDoS detection and prevention and introduce a new potential technique that simplifies the process of detecting and preventing DDoS attacks originating from multiple infected machines, typically known as zombie machines. As a future direction, we discuss a new technique to simplify the detection and prevention of shrew DoS attacks originating from multiple infected machines, commonly known as botnets. the insights presented in this paper will be valuable for researchers and practitioners in cybersecurity.

With the widespread application of IoT (internet of things) technology in smart homes, the security protection of systems has received more attention. In response to the problems of incomplete vulnerability detection and outdated defense mechanisms in traditional methods, this article proposed an efficient and comprehensive vulnerability detection and defense framework. By periodically scanning all terminal devices in the smart home system through edge devices, known vulnerabilities in the system were identified. through edge computing technology and AI (Artificial Intelligence) algorithm detection, lightweight distributed defense mechanisms were deployed between intelligent devices to ensure that when an attack occurred, it can quickly respond locally and reduce the system response time. the experimental results showed that all devices in the edge computing-based scheme had a high coverage rate of more than 90%. In terms of the average response time, the edge computing defense framework combined with AI algorithm was 7.2 s, far lower than the traditional defense methods. the experimental results prove that this research is efficient in improving vulnerability detection and defense response. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

With the development of the new generation of information network technology and the massive data integration generated by the internet of Everything, the management planning of data is becoming more and more reasonable. the data management plane is configured and issued to the data service plane, which can meet the data transmission requirements of different application scenarios. Most network configurations need to be performed during network downtime or when the device is offline, which makes it difficult to meet the requirements for application scenarios such as industrial control. Time- sensitive network (TSN) introduces centralized network configuration (CNC) and centralized user configuration (CUC) through IEEE 802.1Qcc to realize the dynamic configuration of the network and flexibly configure new devices and data flows when the network is running. this paper designs a centralized time-sensitive network controller cluster system to configure the resources of the data service plane of time-sensitive network devices, optimize the resource utilization of the network, and realize flexible networking of the network;based on the distributed cluster technology characteristics of the ONOS open source controller, the network controller is designed and deployed with high reliability, and the controller fault tolerance and elasticity mechanism are realized to solve the reliability problem caused by the single point failure of the TSN network controller. © 2024 IEEE.

the internet of things (IoT) has revolutionized data transfer in industries through the MQTT protocol. MQTT is a lightweight messaging protocol designed for efficient communication among IoT devices. It operates on a publish-subscribe model where data producers (publishers) send messages to specific topics. Interested devices (subscribers) subscribe to these topics through an MQTT broker, facilitating communication. MQTT offers Quality of Service (QoS) levels, ensuring reliable message delivery, making it ideal for IoT with intermittent connectivity. It is valued for low overhead, scalability, and real-Time communication. Traditional MQTT brokers are single-node setups, straightforward for small to moderate IoT applications. In contrast, distributed MQTT brokers are interconnected, offering scalability, redundancy, load balancing, and fault tolerance. they suit large-scale IoT deployments where reliability and performance are vital. the proposed Load-Balancer Redis-based architecture for distributed MQTT brokers overcomes the shortcomings of traditional brokers. the Load-Balancer transfers all incoming TCP packets to the brokers for processing, which ensures equal utilization of each broker node. Redis acts as a synchronization layer for the brokers where the state information is stored. © 2024 IEEE.

Federated learning (FL) has been considered a promising artificial intelligence technology that aims to provide distributed machine learning services while protecting the privacy of training data on terminal device nodes. the traditional federated learning method obtains a local model through training on different device nodes and completes the update of the global model through a central server. However, this approach has issues such as slow communication and privacy leakage. We propose an asynchronous method for updating aggregation in federated learning. the server effectively manages the weight of each model parameter based on the varying training speeds of device nodes to minimize the impact of slower device nodes. Adopting this method can not only improve the efficiency of model updating but also reduce the demand for network bandwidth and computing resources, making it more suitable for resource-constrained environments such as Industrial internet of things (IIoT) systems. In addition, to mitigate the impact of poisoned data, we have developed a dynamic mechanism for allocating privacy budget based on the local Renyi Differential Privacy (RDP) mechanism. this mechanism adjusts the size of the privacy budget to achieve a better balance between model efficiency and privacy protection in the context of the Industrial internet of things. © 2023 IEEE.
