Multiple single-units recorded from chronically-implanted microelectrode arrays frequently exhibit variability in their spike waveform features and firing characteristics, making it challenging to ascertain the identity of recorded neurons across days. In this study, we present a fast and efficient algorithm that tracks multiple single-units, recorded in a nonhuman primate performing brain control of a robotic arm, across days based on features extracted from units' average waveforms. Furthermore, the algorithm does not require long recording duration to perform the analysis and can be applied at the start of each recording session without requiring the subject to be engaged in a behavioral task. the algorithm achieves a classification accuracy of up to 92% compared to experts' manual tracking.

this study introduces a novel data-driven approach for constructing large-scale functional brain networks. these networks are constructed by converting raw functional magnetic resonance imaging data into graphs using independent components analysis (ICA). Empirical evaluations were performed using data collected from three sites, which are part of a pediatric epilepsy consortium. the test data contained 30 control subjects and 29 pediatric epilepsy patients all of which were performing an auditory decision descriptive task, a language task paradigm. this approach is augmented by a unique graph thresholding technique based on the graph density function. the constructed networks were then analyzed using graph theoretical measures. the proposed network construction approach is weighed in merit to the traditional correlation approach and a modified version of it. the obtained results show that the ICA-based approaches improve considerably the delineation process of the patients' population from the controls' population, whereas the traditional methods show considerable overlap between the two populations. Furthermore, an investigation on the topology of the networks constructed show that all methods lead to a small-world topology conforming to previous brain functional studies.

Closed-loop decoder adaptation (CLDA) improves brain-machine interface performance by estimating the decoder parameters in closed-loop operation. By allowing the subject to use an initialized decoder, CLDA techniques infer the intended movement in closed loop, and refine the decoder parameters based on this inference and the recorded neural activity. In some cases, an initialized decoder may be far from optimal. this may cause the initial decoded trajectories to be biased towards a specific region of space, hence affecting the speed of parameter convergence by not allowing the decoder to explore the space. Moreover, this can lower the subject's motivation level due to low initial performance. Here we propose a new combined assisted training and CLDA algorithm based on an infinite-horizon optimal feedback control design for the BMI. We derive an adaptive optimal feedback-controlled point process decoder (FC-PPF) that estimates the subject's intended movement based on the visual feedback of the decoded kinematics and the target position. Using closed-loop BMI simulations that explicitly model the visual feedback delay, we show that decoder parameter values in the adaptive FC-PPF converge to the true values even when initialized arbitrarily. We also show that adaptive FC-PPF can be used as both a combined assisted training and CLDA technique or as a CLDA technique without assistance, hence providing a possible unified framework for closed-loop decoder adaptation.

the goal of Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA) is to enable easy cooperation of a large number of computers and orchestration of services that are connected via a network. However, SOA for wireless sensor networks (WSN) and cyber-physical systems (CPS) is still a challenging task. Consequently, for design and development of large CPS like WSNs connected to clouds, SOA has not yet evolved as an integral technology. One of the limiting issues is service registration and discovery. In large CPS discovery of services is tedious, mostly due to the fact that services are often semantically bound to a region or an application function while SOA forces service endpoints to be based on addresses of nodes. Also, today, SOA technologies are not used for service composition within sensor nodes and between sensor nodes, and even worse, different methods exist for service access in a WSN and in the backend. therefore, service development differs largely in WSN and cloud. To overcome this limitation, we suggest a name-centric service architecture for cyber-physical systems. Our architecture is based on (a) using URNs instead of URLs to provide a service-centric architecture instead of service-or location-centric networking, (b) using the well-known CCNx protocol as a basis for our architecture which supports location and access transparency, and (c) employing CCN-WSN as the resource-efficient lightweight implementation for WSNs to build a name-based service bus for CPS. We evaluate the architecture by implementing an example application for facility management.

In this paper, we summarize a novel approach to robotic rehabilitation that capitalizes on the benefits of patient intent and real-time assessment of impairment. Specifically, an upper-limb, physical human-robot interface (the MAHI EXO-II robotic exoskeleton) is augmented with a non-invasive brain-machine interface (BMI) to include the patient in the control loop, thereby making the therapy 'active' and engaging patients across a broad spectrum of impairment severity in the rehabilitation tasks. Robotic measures of motor impairment are derived from real-time sensor data from the MAHI EXO-II and the BMI. these measures can be validated through correlation with widely used clinical measures and used to drive patient-specific therapy sessions adapted to the capabilities of the individual, with the MAHI EXO-II providing assistance or challenging the participant as appropriate to maximize rehabilitation outcomes. this approach to robotic rehabilitation takes a step towards the seamless integration of BMIs and intelligent exoskeletons to create systems that can monitor and interface with brain activity and movement. Such systems will enable more focused study of various issues in development of devices and rehabilitation strategies, including interpretation of measurement data from a variety of sources, exploration of hypotheses regarding large scale brain function during robotic rehabilitation, and optimization of device design and training programs for restoring upper limb function after stroke.

One of the key elements in the design of neuro-motor Brain-Machine Interfaces (BMIs) is the neural decoder design. In a biomimetic approach, the decoder is typically trained from concurrent recordings of neural and kinematic or motor imagery data. the non-availability of the latter data imposes a practical problem for patients with lost motor functions. An alternative approach is a biofeedback approach in which subjects are encouraged to 'learn' an arbitrary mapping between neural activity and the external end effector. In this work, we propose an unsupervised decoder initialization scheme to be used in the biofeedback approach that alleviates the need for synchronized kinematic or motor imagery data for decoder training. the approach is totally unsupervised in that the recorded neural activity is directly used as training data for a decoder designed to provide 'desirable' features in the decoded control signal. the decoder is trained from 'spontaneous' neural data when the BMI subject is not engaged in any behavioral task, and we demonstrate its ability to generalize to neural data collected when the subject is in a different behavioral state.

We recently demonstrated the use of a novel sEMG based brain-machine-body interface in which subjects learned to continuously navigate a cursor to targets by modulating a surface electromyography signal (sEMG) at a single muscle site. Subjects visually observed the cursor position as it moved on the screen. Two-dimensional control was achieved by simultaneously manipulating the power in two separate frequency bands contained within the one single sEMG measurement. Here, we preliminarily investigate the efficiency of audio feedback on a cursor-to-target task, where subjects cannot observe the cursor position. Two pilot subjects had to infer the cursor position from two-dimensional audio feedback presented in forms of tones through a stereo head set. Testing took place over five separate one-hour long sessions. In the last session, audio feedback was removed half-way through testing. Our preliminary findings show that these two subjects could achieve accuracies of up to 70% despite not seeing the cursor moving on the screen. When the audio feedback was removed, performance accuracies dropped significantly and times-to-target increased.

this paper analyzes the communication between Allen-Bradley (AB) series PLC logix5550 and the upper computer through calls by RS Linx C SDK in DELPHI. Based on I/0 address distribution and differentiation, we put forward a mapping address method. the method can be used to solve problems in communication between PC and PLC. the method overcomes the limitation that PLC can only match the set kind of touch screen. It greatly increases the flexibility of hardware and significantly reduces the costs. © 2012 IEEE.

An excitation control system based on the extended state observer technique was proposed to improve the performance of the generator system used in aviation. the feasibility to improve the system control ability by using the excitation control strategy based on the extended control technique was analyzed. In order to verify the validity of this excitation control strategy, the generator system's exciting closed-loop control mode was built on the simulation platform. the simulation results show that this exciting control strategy can make a good solution to the problems and this method is validity. © 2012 IEEE.

the mechanical design, electronics and the control program developed in order to perform, automatically, the deposition of crystalline layers on substrates using the liquid phase epitaxy technique is described. the implementation of the system includes the hardware and control software of the substrate movements, the gas flow system, the temperature program and the monitoring of the main physical variables such as temperature, humidity, flow, pressure etc. the movement the substrate is done by means of a solenoid whose core is coupled to the slider of the graphite boat. this system was proposed in order to maintain the hermeticity of the system which is vital to achieve the epitaxial growth and to decrease the power of the electric motor that drives the solenoid.
