Using functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) we studied how playing a dance video game employs coordinated activation of sensory-motor integration centers of the superior parietal lobe (SPL) and superior temporal gyrus (STG). Subjects played a dance video game, while changes in oxy-hemoglobin (oxy-Hb) levels were measured. the game was modified to compare difficult, simple and stepping conditions. Oxy-Hb levels were greatest with increased task difficulty. the quick-onset, trapezoidal time-course increase in SPL oxy-Hb levels reflected the on-off neuronal response of spatial orienting and rhythmic motor timing that were required during the activity. Slow-onset, bell-shaped increases in oxy-Hb levels observed in STG suggested the gradually increasing load of directing multisensory information to downstream processing centers associated with motor control. Differences in temporal relationships of SPL and STG oxy-Hb levels may reflect the functional roles of these brain structures. NIRS permits insights into temporal relationships of cortical hemodynamics during real motor tasks. © 2012 IEEE.

In this work, an intelligent online argumentation platform that detects whether the learners address the expected discussion issues is proposed. the concept maps related to the learning topics are first outlined by the instructor. After each learner issues an argument on the learning platform, a term weighting method is adopted to derive inputs parameters of a Support Vector Machines (SVMs) classifier. the classifier then determines if the learners' arguments are related to the concept maps outlined by the instructor. Notably, a peer review mechanism is established in this work to improve the quality of term weighting approach. the experimental results revealed that the students in a junior high school participating in argumentation learning activities of natural science were benefited by the proposed argumentation based learning assistance platform.

A sliding mode control has been a great interest in the control engineering community, with many applications particularly in the robot manipulators control. this paper presents investigations into the development of Sliding Mode control approach based neural network, where the model parameters are used in the equivalent control law. A neural model of robot parameters is calculated. the first one, to estimate the inertia matrix while the second, is dedicated to estimate the parameters of the matrix of the Coriolis/centripetal terms. the last one estimates the gravity vector. To demonstrate the applicability of the methods, a simulated two degrees of freedom robot manipulator is considered in order to evaluate the tracking properties and robustness capacities of neural sliding mode control technique.

One of the fundamental mysteries in biology is to grasp how a cell can choose a specific cellular process in coordinating complex multi-molecular interactions through DNA, RNA, proteins and metabolites. We investigated the existence of guiding principles in gene expression dynamics for three distinct processes: i) the innate immune response of macrophages to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation, ii) interleukin 12 (IL-12) and IL-4 stimulated naive CD4+ T cell differentiation into helper T1 and T2 cells, and iii) HL-60 cell differentiation into neutrophil. We found that for all processes, forming groups of genes reduces gene expression fluctuations, revealing the emergent hidden collective genome-wide (global) expression dynamics and their biological roles. this demonstrates an important role of lowly expressed genes, which have been considered insignificant and noisy, as key players for collective global dynamics. Moreover, in neutrophil differentiation, there are specific gene ensembles (collectively named "genome vehicle") responsible for the cell fate, and the collective motion of lowly and moderately variable genes within the genome vehicle guides whole genome expression dynamics to the neutrophil cell state. Elucidation of biophysical origin for the global guiding principle might provide a breakthrough understanding of how a genome can control cellular processes such as cell fate and differentiation. © 2012 IEEE.

A trim distance as a phylogeny-based distance between two positions in nucleotide sequences is formulated as an LCA-preserving distance between the trimmed phylogenetic trees by the positions. In this paper, in order to investigate the positions as packaging signals of nucleotide sequences in influenza A (H3N2) viruses, we compute and compare the trim distances between positions in the nucleotide sequences of influenza A (H3N2) viruses provided from NCBI.

We study a decentralized solar energy network composed of multiple clusters, which correspond to households equipped with PV units, rechargeable batteries, electrical appliances, and an electric power router. Decentralized solar energy network is a new grid systems toward independence from existing power grid, and solar energy is main energy source for the decentralized energy network. Each cluster has a battery storage to use the renewable energy effectively, where battery degradation cannot be overlooked for long-term, persistent operation. this paper proposes an optimal power distribution minimizing the battery degradation on decentralized energy network. Because the battery degradation is unavoidable phenomenon for the battery utilization, we solve the optimal power distribution to keep the degradation minimum. the proposed approach limits the charge/discharge speeds and cycles at mixed integer programming formulation and achieves the optimal utilization of the renewable energy with less charge/discharge cycles. Experimental results using the real measured data of the power generation and consumption show the connection between the parameters for the battery degradation and the system performance.

the economic indicators of the mining process depend on the speed and accuracy of geophysical data interpretation, but the process of logging data interpretation can not be strictly formalized. therefore, computer interpretation methods on the basis of expert estimates are necessary, such as artificial neural networks (ANN) which have already been used for solving a wide range of recognition problems. the paper analyzes the quality of network's data interpretation essentially depending on its configuration parameters, methods of data preprocessing and learning samples. About 2000 calculation experiments have been made, software and templates for pre-processing of data and interpretation findings have been developed. these experiments showed the effectiveness of neural network approach to solving the problem of geological rocks recognition in stratum-infiltration uranium deposits. Further research in this area will raise the recognition process automation and its accuracy.

In this paper, a unique multiple mobile robots system is proposed to enable students or mechanical engineers to efficiently learn a subsumption architecture for swarm intelligence. the subsumption architecture is known as one of the behaviour-based artificial intelligences. Each of multiple mobile robots has three wheels driven by DC motors and six PSD (Position Sensitive Detector) sensors. A network-based subsumption architecture is considered to realize a schooling behaviour by using only information from the PSD sensors. Further, a server supervisory control is introduced for poor hardware platforms with limitations of software development, i.e., the mobile robots that can only behave based on the most simply subdivided reaction behaviours, i.e., reflex actions, generated from agents. Experimental results show interesting behaviour among the multiple mobile robots, such as following, avoidance and schooling.

the paper discusses topology optimization for reduction of fault current level. the problem of excessive fault current level for heavily looped power systems needs to be dealt with in the system long-term planning stage by the change of circuit breakers with higher short-circuit capacity. In the operation planning stage, however, alternative measures should be devised to reduce fault current level for critical locations. In this paper, the countermeasures of interest are bus splitting and line opening which modify power network topology. When the selected measures are applied, the magnitudes of thevenin impedances at the critical locations would be increased and hence the fault current levels might get lower to the acceptable level. In this paper, a Tabu search on the solution space with binary variables was adopted as the solution technique to find adequate topology changing schemes to satisfying the fault level security criteria.
