In humans, motion information is mainly processed by the dorsal visual stream. this stream consists of two functional streams: the ventro-dorsal (v-d) and dorso-dorsal (d-d) streams. Patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) exhibit an impairment in motion perception. By using visual event-related potentials (ERPs), we have previously demonstrated that v-d function related to optic flow (OF) perception is selectively impaired in the dorsal stream in MCI patients. the present study is aimed at examining the difference in the changes in two functional dorsal streams among MCI and AD patients and healthy controls. therefore, we recorded ERPs in response to OF and horizontal (HO) motion stimuli in patients with AD and MCI, and healthy controls. In all groups, motion-related N170 (V5/middle temporal (MT) origin) and OF-specific P200 (v-d origin) were elicited as major components. MCI patients showed a prolonged latency of P200 for OF but not of N170 for both stimuli compared with healthy controls. In contrast, the latencies of N170 for both stimuli and P200 for OF were significantly prolonged in AD patients compared with other groups. these findings indicate that MCI patients exhibit a selective impairment in the v-d stream, whereas AD patients have impairments in distributed dorsal stream function. these ERP results may reflect the progression of pathological changes in the course of the disease. therefore, motion-related ERPs are useful to detect and track changes in the brain function of patients with MCI and AD. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper we present a method of transmitting routing updates in IPv6 networks. Routing protocols that use discrete packets to send/receive routing updates are susceptible to instability in a limited bandwidth or lossy links environment. We study and compare our method with OSPF and EIGRP and show that it stabilizes more rapidly. By design, our method is robust and it is not susceptible to bandwidth limitation and to the degree of lost packets like other routing protocols.

Various optimization problems associated with the optimal control of second order time delay hyperbolic systems have been studied in [5], [6], [7], [8], [9] and [10] respectively. In this paper, we consider an optimal control problem for a linear infinite order hyperbolic system. the initial conditions are given by control functions. Sufficient conditions for the existence of a unique solution of such hyperbolic equations with the Dirichlet boundary conditions are presented. the performance functional has the quadratic form. the time horizon T is fixed. Finally, we impose some constraints on the control. Making use of the Lions scheme ([12]), necessary and sufficient conditions of optimality for the Dirichlet problem with the quadratic performance functional and constrained control are derived.

this paper proposes a similar image retrieval for the Kansei retrieval. the Kansei retrieval system is designed to search for user's clothing articles by considering their Kansei. the system adopts a Kansei retrieval agent. the agent identifies users's choice of clothing by imitating their Kansei. However, the agent's structure can become excessively complicated because considerable information is potentially available. therefore, a Kansei retrieval system needs to utilizes similar image retrieval. Similar image retrieval searches for a clothing image on the basis of clothing images. Clothing design contains less information than clothing image. A design includes features intended to create a general impression of piece of clothing. In addition, the Kansei retrieval agent evaluates the design, and searches for the designs that a user likes on the basis of the evaluation. therefore, the agent's structure does not become complicated. In this study, we created a similar image retrieval application and verified it effectiveness. the application searches for clothing images on the basis of the design that a user chooses. the results show that similar image retrieval can identify clothing images similar to the design. thus, the effectiveness of the proposed similar image retrieval system was confirmed.

this paper discusses implementation aspects related to a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm, a Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) and a hybrid PSO-GSA. these evolutionary optimization algorithms are applied to the optimal tuning of Takagi-Sugeno-Kang PI-fuzzy controllers (T-S-K PI-FCs) for a class of nonlinear second-order processes with an integral component. the parameters of T-S-K PI-FCs are variables in the optimization problems with objective functions which depend on the output sensitivity function with respect to the small time constant of the process, and T-S-K PI-FCs with a reduced sensitivity with respect to the process small time constant are proposed. A comparison of PSO, GSA and PSO-GSA from algorithms' accuracy point of view is presented in the framework of a case study accompanied by digital simulation results.

the stabilization problem for a class of continuous switched fuzzy systems is investigated. Based on the multiple Lyapunov functions method either in switched systems or in fuzzy systems, we present a two layers multiple Lyapunov functions approach and give a stability condition for uncontrolled switched fuzzy systems and a stabilization condition for closed-loop switched fuzzy systems under a switching law. Simultaneously, state feedback controllers with the time derivative information of membership functions are designed. A numerical example along with simulation results demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Obtaining precise geolocation estimates for mobile devices requires knowledge of the local propagation velocity of light. Under common atmospheric conditions, incorrect propagation velocity estimates introduce systemic dilution of precision using time difference of arrival techniques. Modeling local propagation velocity as a function of common local meteorological variables yields corrected velocity estimates directly applicable to existing algorithms. In a simulated wireless network, matching the refractivity assumed in computing estimated positions to the simulated environmental refractivity shows some evidence that gains in accuracy and precision are achievable.

the ability to monitor stress levels in daily life can provide valuable information to patients and their caretakers, help identify potential stressors, determine appropriate interventions, and monitor their effectiveness. Wearable sensor technology makes it now possible to measure non-invasively a number of physiological correlates of stress, from skin conductance to heart rate variability. these measures, however, show large individual differences and are also correlated with the physical activity of the subject. In this paper, we propose two multivariate signal processing techniques to reduce the effect of both forms of interference. the first method is an unsupervised technique that removes any systematic variation that is orthogonal to the dependent variable, in this case physiological stress. In contrast, the second method is a supervised technique that first projects the data into a subspace that emphasizes these systematic variations, and then removes them from the data. the two methods were validated on an experimental dataset containing physiological recordings from multiple subjects performing physical and/or mental activities. When compared to z-score normalization, the standard method for removing individual differences, our methods can reduce stress prediction errors by as much as 50%.
