Signalized intersection can interrupt the traffic flow, potentially increasing vehicle energy consumption levels and extending travel time. this paper presents an eco-approach and departure strategy (EAD) using a double-layer control scheme, to achieve the optimization of energy economy and traffic throughput for connected electric vehicle (EV) at the route with multiple intersections and varying road slopes. In the first layer, for improving traffic throughput, we design a traffic light green window planning method with consideration of the spatio-temporal coupling of intersections. then, in the second layer, a distance-domain optimal control problem (OCP) is formulated considering the intersection segment, green window intervals, and speed limitations. this OCP is solved by dynamic programming algorithm, to derive the energy-optimal speed. Finally, a simulation is conducted using the route from a real-world scenario in Nanjing, China, to evaluate the performance of the proposed strategy. the results indicate the proposed EAD strategy can improve EV energy efficiency and traffic throughput dramatically compared with the regular constant speed strategy.

A resource allocation scheme based on chaotic ant colony algorithm in self-organizing wireless sensor network is proposed, and corresponding chaotic sequence generator is designed in this paper. Simulations are conducted to compare the proposed method with conventional genetic algorithm and dynamic programming algorithm under self-organizing wireless sensor network environment. Results show that compared with the scheme based on dynamic allocation algorithm and conventional genetic algorithm, the scheme based on chaotic ant colony algorithm has higher target detection rate and lower power consumption, which also extends the networks lifetime. © 2020 Institute of Physics Publishing. Big Data has significantly increased the dependence of data analytics community on High Performance Computing (HPC) systems. However, efficiently programming an HPC system is still a tedious task requiring specialized skills in parallelization and the use of platform-specific languages as well as mechanisms. We present a framework for quickly prototyping new/existing density-based clustering algorithms while obtaining low running times and high speedups via automatic parallelization. the user is required only to specify the sequential algorithm in a Domain Specific Language (DSL) for clustering at a very high level of abstraction. the parallelizing compiler for the DSL does the rest to leverage distributed systems in particular, typical scale-out clusters made of commodity hardware. Our approach is based on recurring, parallelizable programming patterns known as Kernels, which are identified and parallelized by the compiler. We demonstrate the ease of programming and scalable performance for DBSCAN, SNN, and RECOME algorithms. We also establish that the proposed approach can achieve performance comparable to state-of-the-art manually parallelized implementations while requiring minimal programming effort that is several orders of magnitude smaller than those required on other parallel platforms like MPI/Spark.

When an officer on watch (OOW) faces the complex multi-ship encounter situations, choosing the appropriate decision could improve maritime safety and reduce navigation burden. However, the operation conflict under multi-ship encounter situation would make the decision much more complex. In this paper, based on COLREGs, the cooperative collision avoidance decision model is established to make the optimal decision in multi-ship encounter in iterative mode, so as to solve the problem of decision conflict among the ships. Firstly, the collision risk between own ship and target ships is determined by Distance at Closest Point of Approach and Time to Closest Point of Approach. Secondly, an objective function is established considering the COLREGs, ship drift and collision risk. Finally, the optimal decision is selected through the prediction mechanism. the results show that the collision avoidance model can ensure safety with lower steering frequency and shorter anti-collision time. the proposed model can provide reference and improve the efficiency in multi-ship encounter situations.

A problem of video streaming of scalable video coding (SVC) is studied in vehicular networks. To improve the performance of the video streaming services and alleviate the pressure on backhaul links, the small cell base stations (SBS) is proposed with caching ability to assist the content delivery. In this paper, it introduced the problem of joint optimization of caching strategy and transmission path in SBS cache cluster. An integer programming problem was formulated to maximize the average quality of experience. In order to obtain the globally optimal solution, the primal problem was first relaxed, then an adaptive algorithm was used based on the joint KKT condition, and the branch definition algorithm was applied. Extensive simulations were performed to demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed caching strategy. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Currently smartphones are used extensively by students. thus, their proper use within teaching/learning activities is a reality which needs to be addressed. How teachers and students without advanced programming skills can develop their own mobile devices applications? An attempt to answer this question is presented in control engineering teaching and learning activities. It will be shown that the MIT App Inventor 2 provides an excellent tool to develop simple applications for Android based mobile devices. Examples of applications designed both by lecturers and students using the MIT App Inventor 2 are described, outlining different uses and features. A case study of using applications to support teaching/learning of PLC programming is presented.

We present a novel theoretical result concerning the applicability of coordinate-wise minimization on the dual problem of linear programming (LP) relaxation of weighted partial Max-SAT that shows that every fixed point of this procedure defines a feasible primal solution. In addition, this primal solution corresponds to the result of a certain propagation rule applicable to weighted Max-SAT. Moreover, we analyze the particular case of LP relaxation of SAT and observe that coordinate-wise minimization on the dual problem resembles unit propagation and also has the same time complexity as a naive unit propagation algorithm. We compare our theoretical results with max-sum diffusion which is a coordinate-wise minimization algorithm that is used to optimize the dual of the LP relaxation of the Max-Sum problem and can in fact perform a different kind of constraint propagation, namely deciding whether a given constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) has non-empty arc consistency closure. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Differential Evolution (DE), the evolution algorithm (EA) in the repository of evolutionary computing (EC), is known for its simplicity and adaptability to high performance computing paradigms. the distributed algorithmic frameworks of DE are the natural extension of DE, as DE is highly suitable for parallel and distributed computing. this paper proposes a study on implementing an enhanced distributed differential algorithm framework (named as mtdDE - multithreaded distributed DE) with multi-threaded islands in a distributed framework, to attain maximum level of data parallelism. the main objective of mtdDE is to reduce the computation time and to improve the solution quality for the targeted optimization problems. this paper presents this study in two phases. the Phase I implements the traditional distributed DE (dDE) framework and compares its performance with a state-of-the-art distributed DE, on a set of 8 benchmarking functions. In Phase II, the proposed mtdDE was implemented and its performance was compared with the dDE on a set of 4 benchmarking problems. the performance metrics considered were - the objective function values (ofv), the mean objective function values (mov), the execution time (et) and the average execution time (aet). the results acquired for the performance metrics of the dDE and mtdDE were studied, and the study revealed that the mtdDE outperforms the dDE in terms of both the solution accuracy and the computation time. the detailed discussion about the algorithmic structure, the experimental setup, the results obtained and the comparative study were presented in this paper.

the focus of this study is to explore the CS 4204 Software engineering dedicated lab period accompanying traditional lectures. iPhone mobile app development took place using the industry standard Apple Xcode IDE and the Swift programming language in a Mac lab. Tutorials that built upon each other were assigned to students, leading to a culminating project. the labs were designed with the intent of helping students put software engineering theory into practice during mobile app development. Student perceptions and lab maintenance issues were discussed. Overall, faculty concluded that the added lab periods were beneficial for students.

A bank should provide reliable financial services to its customers. Banking services are evolving along with information technology advancement. It is a common practice for every organization to adopt the latest technology to gain or sustain their competitive advantage against competitors. Nevertheless, not every technology implemented in banks is a state of the art technology. they come from a different extent, and these older generation technologies are called the legacy system. the mainframe is usually a part of a legacy system because it exists since the organization was established. the mainframe managed a humongous financial transaction at a time. Its reliable performance makes it indispensable. therefore, banks are facing the interoperability challenges between the legacy system and new technologies. this study will analyze the approach used by a bank in Indonesia in embracing agile development principles in implementing new technologies above their rigid legacy infrastructure.
