Knowledge is the foremost asset to succeed in the area of green sustainable software engineering. Effective knowledge sharing is a crucial objective of companies. However, individuals are not motivated to share knowledge. this study explores knowledge sharing in the context of Modern Code Review (MCR) where engineers assess source code composed by other developers to improve the product quality through knowledge exchange among developers (Author and reviewer). the procedure is profoundly subject to individual associations among developers regarding contribute to the outcomes of MCR such as identifying alternative solutions, code improvement, and knowledge sharing. Knowledge sharing is supposed as an important outcome of MCR; however, developers involved in MCR activities are confronted with a lack of knowledge sharing challenge due to a dearth of knowledge sharing motivation. there are different individual factors that might encourage or hinder developers to engage in knowledge sharing. Studies have been performed dependent on information investigation gathered from surveys, interviews and review tools concerning elements affecting MCR, still the literature lacks research regarding factors impacting knowledge sharing aspect in MCR. Hence, this examination performs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) that distinguish individual factors impacting knowledge sharing in MCR. the examination discoveries 34 individual factors such as biasness, cognitive load, time pressure, expertise, etc. the factors are grouped into 7 broad categories utilizing grounded theory. Study discoveries have suggestions for programming specialists involved in MCR activities and researchers interested to perform research in this area to broaden the examination and perform MCR exercises adequately by considering and beating the negative effect of recognized variables.

In Container Terminals, managing the external truck arrivals is one of the essential managerial activities that, typically, the terminal operators conduct continuously on the short term using a Truck Appointment System (TAS). However, the trucking companies are influenced by the developed appointments and schedules which affect their operations and resources. this paper introduces a collaborative TAS to enable the trucking companies and container terminals to share making the decisions on scheduling the external truck appointments. this paper proposes a Dynamic Collaborative Truck Appointment System (DCTAS) which adopts a simulation optimization approach which integrates a discrete event simulation model with a mixed integer programming model. the DCTAS considers some realistic parameters that enhance the development of reliable appointments that fit the dynamic and stochastic circumstances of container terminals environment. the performance of the developed DCTAS is investigated by solving a numerical instance. the results show that both the container terminals and trucking companies can gain benefits from using the DCTAS. Yard efficiency performance indicators such as the maximum queue lengths, average waiting times, maximum waiting times and average truck turn times are improved using the developed appointment system. © Springer international Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

Scheduling multiproduct pipelines is a complex managerial task with a remarkable impact on the total revenues of the pipeline industry. It consists of sequencing, sizing and timing of injections and removals, to meet product demands on time at minimum cost. Generating the detailed scheduling of pipeline networks can be very challenging, requiring efficient optimization tools to find good feasible solutions. this paper develops a hierarchical decomposition approach for tree-like pipeline systems with two-level branching. Decisions related to the sequence of product injections and the destination for each batch, are made at the higher planning layer, while the lower layer then finds the sequence and timing of product deliveries. Each layer is tackled by a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) formulation, which neither discretizes the time horizon nor divides a pipeline segment into packs of equal size. Solutions to three case studies present significant reductions in both the operating cost and the computational burden. © Springer international Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

Upholding quality of service (QoS) parameters while ranking cloud-based Virtual Machines (VMs) that deliver the same service is a challenging task which has been addressed by prior approaches like VM resource deep analytics (RDA). But these approaches fail to consider the heterogeneous aspect of the VMs where higher resource-centric VMs tend to offer sublime performance and lower resource-centric VMs offer nominal throughput. this can also influence the VM RDA ranking algorithms where the former tends to be at the top of the ranks while the latter at margins. To counter this effect and to create an equal footing to most VMs and optimize the rankings despite the VMs varying resource centricity, we propose a VM packaging algorithm that addresses the heterogeneous aspect. We considered a maximization problem of Virtual Machine where each machine is assigned P pages of memory, a set of m servers, a group of V virtual machines, such that a version of the problem consists of one server which is developed by using the dynamic programming solution to deploy all VM instances simultaneously and consider their ranking despite their heterogeneous aspect. Aided with this new algorithm, we intend to reduce the delays and overheads experienced with the usage of heterogeneous complexity of VMs and tend to deliver an efficient ranking solution. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2018.

the fast-evolving theory and technology development in electronic and information have been reshaping the telecommunication engineering curriculum due to the fundamental problem between the increasingly volume of knowledge and the limited study hours. It is challenging to enhance students' engineering capability in a systematic approach. We have been designing and developing a telecommunication engineering pipeline and carefully design different courses of the curriculum for telecommunication engineering. the "signals and systems" is one of the fundamental theoretical courses in telecommunication engineering. In this paper, we designed and implemented a virtual laboratory system to improve students' hands-on experiences in effectively learning rather abstract concepts, models and methods in signals and systems. this learning system was developed using the LabVIEW and Matlab hybrid programming to reduce the requirement of the programming background for the students. this tool consists of 8 lab modules for the discrete signal processing and the continuous signal processing. We conducted various system testing experiments to evaluate its usability. Using this system, the students are able to design and implement the lab sessions integrated with a visual computing process and a virtual instrument interactive interface. Our pedagogy practice has shown that this system effectively improves the students learning performance, and more importantly inspires the enthusiasm and motivation of the students for the electronic information discipline.

Containers are increasingly adopted, because they simplify the deployment and management of applications. Moreover, the ever increasing presence of IoT devices and Fog computing resources calls for the development of new approaches for decentralizing the application execution, so to improve the application performance. Although several solutions for orchestrating containers exist, the most of them does not efficiently exploit the characteristics of the emerging computing environment. In this paper, we propose Adaptive Container Deployment (ACD), a general model of the deployment and adaptation of containerized applications, expressed as an Integer Linear programming problem. Besides acquiring and releasing geo-distributed computing resources, ACD can optimize multiple run-time deployment goals, by exploiting horizontal and vertical elasticity of containers. We show the flexibility of the ACD model and, using it as benchmark, we evaluate the behavior of several greedy heuristics for determining the container deployment.

One of the main purposes of the Internet of things (IoT) systems is to provide information on the observed physical system and to notify when a certain observed complex event occurs in the system. the biggest challenge of the IoT systems is that the systems collect a massive amount of uncertain data from diverse IoT devices, where the devices are connected through the internet. In addition to that, some events are inferred from other events and uncertainty is propagated from parent events to the inferred events, which additionally contributes to overall system uncertainty. the observed complex events are a complex relationship of primitive events that are produced by IoT devices and collected in IoT system. there were a couple of attempts to quantify the system uncertainty by estimating the likelihood of the occurrence of events of interest while taking into account the uncertain data and uncertain parameters of the model of the physical system with rule-based complex event processing and/or Bayesian network. these methods were implemented as stand-alone software solutions that are unable to scale under heavy loads of incoming events. this paper proposes a micro-service based notification methodology that uses complex event recognition to handle the IoT system uncertainty.

this paper presented researches in serious games for learning. the old issue of using digital games simply because it is the latest technology which led to the 'chocolate-covered broccoli' phenomenon is addressed by designing an adaptive component of the game as a representation of learning materials and learning experience to provide challenge. Implementing game design motivational model is another approach to developing effective serious game. Game modding and visual approach on the other hand help students to learn difficult subjects such as programming. © 2017 IEEE.

the present study utilizes VirtualBox virtual environment technology to develop the personal and compact size of multi-node big data VM platform with Spark and Hadoop cluster that can effectively replicate and provides an environment for developers to easily design and implement Spark and Hadoop Map/Reduce programming. By using the multi-node Hadoop VM system, developers can conduct Map/Reduce programing completely the same as that in the real multi-node Hadoop cluster. To demonstrate its capability and applicability, this study performs the benchmark by using the big data VM platform and a physical Multi-Node Hadoop Cluster. Based on the standard WordCount benchmarking, the computing time of the physical multi-node Hadoop cluster is 3.7 times faster than that of VM Hadoop cluster. the benchmark results show that the big data VM platform is an ideal platform for the portal and Map/Reduce programming, Spark programming and testing purposes, and the physical Hadoop cluster is the most appropriate for production runs. In addition, the big data VM platform contains a web portal development module designed to support applications that implement big data computing services for the engineering and science users. Such applications are inherently complex, potentially accessing data from a variety of sources and distributing applications to a variety of clients. this portal development module can act as multiple roles in many projects such as personal portals, small business portals, enterprise portals, educational portal, infrastructure portal, and other types of portals. Finally, the big data VM platform, in term of a big data development platform, is ready for users to download. the first author of this paper would like to give a demonstration for the proposed multi-node big data VM platform. © 2017 IEEE.

the so-called modality refers to the use of symbol resources for communication. With the rapid development of network information technology, the human discourse environment gradually changes from single mode to the current multimodality. In the network multi-modal environment, the construction and improvement of the language independent learning mechanism has ushered in a good opportunity. With the modal diversity brought about by network information technology, teachers have more choices in teaching methods and students' learning horizons are broader. All these provide the necessary conditions for the construction and improvement of independent learning mechanism. therefore, this paper starts with the theoretical analysis of multimodal and autonomous learning, and studies the influence of network multimodal environment on English autonomous learning. Finally, it puts forward the strategy of further improving English autonomous learning mechanism.
