We propose three cache-efficient algorithms, ByRow, ByRowSegment and ByBox, for RNA folding using Nussinov's dynamic programming equations [1]. these algorithms, along with the cache-efficient Transpose algorithm of Li et al [2]. and the Classical algorithm of Nussinov are analyzed using a simple LRU cache model. For this model, Classical has the highest number of cache misses followed by Transpose, ByRow, ByRowSegment, and ByBox (in this order). Extensive experiments conducted on a single core of a Xeon E5 server, using two programming languages-C and Java-show that cache efficiency translates into time and energy efficiency. For example, our benchmarking shows that, when the algorithms are programmed in C, our ByBox algorithm reduces run time by as much as 91∶3% and energy consumption by as much as 90∶8% relative to Classical and by as much as 56∶3% and 57∶9%, respectively, relative to Transpose. In the Java programming language, ByBox takes up to 88∶9% less time than Classical and up to 74∶9% less than Transpose. Also, using the same amount of memory, the algorithms proposed by us can solve problems up to 40% larger than those solvable by Transpose.

Reactive power dispatch is one of the primary tasks in the operation and control of a power system. this paper presents Goal Attainment method to solve the reactive power dispatch (RPD) problem. Reactive power dispatch is carried out to reduce real power losses, to improve the voltage profile and voltage stability in a power system. Goal Attainment method is a reliable optimization technique for obtaining near global optimization. For multi-objective optimization problems the Goal Attainment method is a powerful method to find the best compromising solution. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed Goal attainment based approach, it is implemented for reactive power dispatch in the standard IEEE 30-bus test system. the obtained results have been compared with the reported results using Genetic Algorithm based fuzzy goal programming, Differential Evolutionary technique and optimization Toolbox. On comparison, the Goal attainment based approach is found to be superior in terms of solution quality and speed.

Using state assignment to reduce area and power dissipation is important for the design of sequential circuits. In this paper, a new approach of state assignment using immune algorithm (IA)is proposed. the goal of the proposed IA is to find the optimal state assignment with low area and power dissipation. the proposed IA hybrid the immune operator and local search. Local search is adopt to prevent the premature convergence and remain the diversity of the whole population. the traditional crossover and mutation operator has been modified. Compared with published research, the proposed IA obtains a better state assignment that saves area and power dissipation.

Developments in technology, especially in computer science created the need of storing data in variety of areas. this need created the term database where the data is stored in a useful form. In the database, data is logically integrated in file/files according to relations among them. One of the important issues is to extract knowledge from these databases that hold data in a useful and complete form. this process is called as data mining. the main objective of data mining is to extract implicit and useful knowledge from huge and at first glance meaningless mass of data that is stored in database(s). Multi-Relational databases are the ones in which the data is stored in multiple tables (relations). the relationships between those tables are also stored as tables (relations) in the database. the more effective and commonly known approaches for Multi-Relational Data Mining (MRDM) are based on Inductive Logic programming (ILP). ILP contains concepts from Inductive Learning and Logic programming. From this point, the main purpose of MRDM is extracting implicit and trivial knowledge from relational database(s) using ILP approaches and techniques. In this approach, data is represented in graph structures and graph mining techniques are used for knowledge discovery. Concept discovery in multi-relational data mining aims to find relational rules that best describe a relation, called target relation, in terms of other relations in the database, called background knowledge. In this study, a graph-based concept discovery method for concept discovery is presented. the proposed method, namely G-CDS (Graph-based Concept Discovery System), utilizes methods both from substructure-based and path-finding based approaches, hence it can be considered as a hybrid method. G-CDS generates disconnected graph structures for each target relation and its related background knowledge, which are initially stored in a relational database, and utilizes them to guide generation of a summary graph

With the advent of agile software processing methods and needs to write the programs and software with the best quality in the shortest possible time, unorthodox practices in computer programming are becoming more and more common. One of these practices is pair programming characterized by two programmers sharing the same computer for collaborative programming purposes. Pair programming implies a psychological and social interaction between the participating programmers. the goal of this paper is an evaluation of the pair programming to determine the influence of programmers' personality and problem difficulty on efficiency of pairs. An agent-based system is used to simulate a pair and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is used to measure personality of each member of the pairs. this paper presents, suggests, and evaluates the role of personality in formation and the utility of a pair. © 2015 IEEE.

Examining natural hazards responsible for cultural heritage damages all over Europe, especially over large or remote areas is extremely difficult, expensive and time consuming. there is a need identify and respond to natural hazards before they create irreparable damage to cultural heritage sites. the PROthEGO project uses radar interferometry to monitor surface deformation with mm precision to analyze the impact of geo-hazards in cultural heritage sites in Europe. the project applies novel InSAR techniques to monitor monuments and sites that are potentially unstable due to landslides, sinkholes, settlement, subsidence, active tectonics as well as structural deformation, all of which could be affected of climate change and human interaction. To magnify the impact of the project, the approach will be implemented in more than 400 sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List (WHL) in geographical Europe. After the remote sensing investigation, detailed geological interpretation, hazard analysis, localscale monitoring, advanced modelling and field surveying for the most critical sites will be carried out to discover the cause and extent of the observed motions. PROthEGO (PROTection of European Cultural HEritage from GeO-hazards) is a collaborative research project funded in the framework of the Joint programming Initiative on Cultural Heritage and Global Change (JPICH) – Heritage Plus in 2015–2018. © Springer international Publishing AG 2016.

In this chapter, we report two studies in which 3rd- and 4th-grade students used a distributed computing infrastructure (ViMAP-Tangible) in order to collaboratively invent "mathematical machines" for generating geometric shapes. ViMAP-Tangible combines the ViMAP visual programming language with a distributed computing infrastructure, in which students collaboratively control the behavior of a virtual agent using both mechanical devices and virtual algorithms. the curricular activities integrate engineering practices such as user-centered design;agent-based computer programming;mathematical reasoning about multiplication, rates, and geometry;and physical science concepts central to learning Newtonian mechanics. In Study 1, we investigate the key affordances of such a distributed computing environment for learning Integrated STEM, and identify the relationships between the various elements of students' physical constructions and computational models, and their STEM learning outcomes. Study 2 is a deeper investigation of the effect of iterative user testing on the refinement of children's designs and their STEM learning.
