One of the key problems in the development of software product lines is the representation and management of variability and commonality. the customary way to define both aspects is by means of feature models that also allow the configuration of each specific application within the product line to be selected. However the control of traceability between the features and the architectural models (generally based on UML) is not simple. the fundamental reasons are the complexity of the traceability relationships, and the fact that the same modeling mechanisms (e.g., the specialization in a class diagram) serve to express the variation points in the models that represent the product line and in each specific application. the aim of this work is to use the package merge mechanism of the UML 2 infrastructure meta-model as the representation (and support for the configuration) of the variability in the product line while reserving the classical mechanisms (the specialization in the structural models, the > relationship in the use case models, etc.) to express the variants in execution time of each specific application. the structure of the feature models is directly reflected in the relationships between packages in the architectural models, so the traceability of the configuration decisions is straightforward. the direct implementation of the package merge mechanism using the facility of partial classes of languages such as C# is an additional advantage that leads to the ideal of "seamless development". Some in the aspect-oriented community view a programming language as aspect-oriented only if it allows programmers to perfectly eliminate scattering and tangling. that is, languages that do not allow programmers to have maximal quantification and perfect obliviousness are not viewed as aspect-oriented. On the other hand, some detractors of aspect-oriented software development view maximal quantification and perfect obliviousness as causing problems, such as difficulties in reasoning or maintenance. Both views ignore good language design and engineering practice, which suggests trying to simultaneously optimize for several goals. that is, designers of aspect-oriented languages that are intended for wide use should be prepared to compromise quantification and obliviousness to some (small) extent, if doing so helps programmers solve other problems. Indeed, balancing competing requirements is an essential part of engineering. Simultaneously optimizing for several language design goals becomes possible when one views these goals, such as minimizing scattering and tangling, not as all-or-nothing predicates, but as measures on a continuous scale. Since most language design goals will only be partially met, it seems best to call them "concerns". Copyright © 2007 ACM.

Decentralized MDPs provide powerful models of interactions in multiagent environments, but are often very difficult or even computationally infeasible to solve optimally. Here we develop a hierarchical approach to solving a restricted set of decentralized MDPs. By forming commitments with other agents and modeling these concisely in their local MDPs, agents effectively, efficiently, and distributively formulate co-ordinated local policies. We introduce a novel construction that captures commitments as constraints on local policies and show how Linear programming can be used to achieve local optimality subject to these constraints. In contrast to other commitment enforcement approaches, we show ours to be more robust in capturing the intended commitment semantics while maximizing local utility. We also describe a commitment-space heuristic search algorithm that can be used to approximate optimal joint policies. A preliminary empirical evaluation suggests that our approach yields faster approximate solutions than the conventional encoding of the problem as a multiagent MDP would allow and, when wrapped in an exhaustive commitment-space search, will find the optimal global solution. © 2007 IFAAMAS.

this paper contributes to solve effectively stochastic resource allocation problems known to be NP-Complete. To address this complex resource management problem, a Q-decomposition approach is proposed when the resources which are already shared among the agents, but the actions made by an agent may influence the reward obtained by at least another agent. the Q-decomposition allows to coordinate these reward separated agents and thus permits to reduce the set of states and actions to consider. On the other hand, when the resources are available to all agents, no Q-decomposition is possible and we use heuristic search. In particular, the bounded Real-time Dynamic programming (bounded RTDP) is used. Bounded RTDP concentrates the planning on significant states only and prunes the action space. the pruning is accomplished by proposing tight upper and lower bounds on the value function. © 2007 IFAAMAS.

Organizational models produced within computer science fields have proved to be effective communication tools in developing shared understandings of the design of organizations and systems. We argue that these models can also be valuable in capturing the actual implementation of organizations. However, this kind of usage requires the development of enterprise representations that (1) acknowledge the complexity of organizations and its agents and (2) are able of capturing the situated and dynamic behavior of organizational agents. this paper describes how engineering, cognitive and social approaches to context are integrated in a conceptual framework to model organizational agents and their contexts of interaction to address these issues. this integration is illustrated with examples from a case study.

Web services are increasingly being applied in solving many universal interoperability problems. Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) is a de facto standard for specifying the behaviour of business process. It contains several interesting features, including scope-based compensation, fault handling and shared label synchronisation. this paper presents a design-based formalism for specifying the behaviour of Web services, and provides new healthiness conditions to capture these new programming features. the new models for handling fault and compensation are built as conservative extension of the standard relational model in the sense that the algebraic laws presented in [14] remain valid. the paper also discusses the links between the new model with the design model, and shows that programs can be transformed to the normal forms within the algebraic framework. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

Aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is a new programming paradigm that improves separation of concerns by decomposing the crosscutting concerns in aspect modules. Bad smells are metaphors to describe software patterns that are generally associated with bad design and bad programming of object-oriented programming (OOP). New notions and different ways of thinking for developing aspect-oriented (AO) software inevitably introduce bad smells which are specific bad design and bad programming in AO software called AO bad smells. Software metrics have been used to measure software artifact for a better understanding of its attributes and to assess its quality. Bad-smell metrics should be used as indicators for determining whether a particular fraction of AO code contains bad smells or not. therefore, this paper proposes definition of metrics corresponding to the characteristic of each AO bad smell as a means to detecting them. the proposed bad-smell metrics are validated and the results show that the proposed bad- smell metrics can preliminarily indicate bad smells hidden in AO software.

Considering the large amounts of data that is nowadays produced in the biochemistry (functional genomics) it is difficult to extract the information from the measurements. there is currently also a great interest in the development of novel analytical technologies for rapid screening of disease symptoms in pharmaceutical and clinical applications. Modeling and simulation can provide a useful help in understanding the relations of the measured substances and to minimize the need for measurements. the BioChem library presented here is the first free Modelica library available for mathematical modeling of biochemical processes. three examples are shown to illustrate the library. First, a simple insulin model is presented. then a simplified model of cholesterol together with simulations are shown. Next, a simple drug model together with parameter estimation in NONMEN are presented. the BioChem library allows for fast and end-user friendly modeling of biomedical systems. the graphical user interface provides graphics similar to that used in the description of metabolic pathways in biochemistry.

the great diversity of presentations in software applications deals with fulfillment of various type of graphic interface constructions related to different programming languages. Moreover, in the Internet era html pages play a main role because of the increasing complexity of Web applications. In Software engineering, the use of design patterns is proven remarkable for the design and reuse of software components. Visual design patterns (ViDP) are useful to define interaction schemas between user and computer. By the some token, visual design patterns are useful to incorporate common interfaces of interaction schemas between user and computer. this paper describes the extensible presentation language (XPL), a presentation language based on visual pattern. XPL framework implementation will be discussed in details and a case study showing the benefits of employing XPL will be presented.

Advances in the Web have eventually arrived at the new concept of 'Web 2.0' and the Blog is a representing service of Web 2.0. Despite the dramatic increase of the Blog users and distinctive characteristics of them, the classical processes of blog creation have difficulties in taking user's preference into account without knowledge about Web programming. thus, we developed an automated blog design generation system through a population-based artificial immune algorithm. In the algorithm, a user's requirements and a blog design correspond to, respectively, an antigen and an antibody of vertebrate immune system. A slicing tree layout and the HSV color space model are used to represent a blog design as a string format of an antibody. Design quality quantification rules of a blog design and a distance measure between two different blog designs are devised to compose an affinity function. the system shows ability to provide new blogs to the user quickly and easily considering user's preferences with good algorithmic performance when it compared with conventional genetic algorithms. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.
