In this paper, a local optimization framework is proposed, which is able to include system constraints, i.e., channel availability, receiver availability and tuning overhead, by linear mathematical formulations so that it is sufficient to obtain the optimal performance in terms of message loss rate. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) based optimal scheduling scheme has been proposed. Based on the new solutions, the wavelength assignment and message sequence that guarantee the delivery of the given traffic request, while minimizing the loss rate, can be achieved. Numerical results obtained suggest that the proposed schemes are promising approaches for optimizing the network performance.

Empirically studying the incremental software development process could provide some insights on the cognitive process and the knowledge involved. In this study, we conducted a case study on incremental software development with ten pairs of intermediate programmers. We applied the dialog-based protocol to collect the data, and the self-directed learning as an encoding scheme to analyze the empirical data. the case study demonstrated that during incremental software development, programmers applied the four constructivist activities (absorption, reorganization, denial and expulsion) to design and implement the program. the programmers spent more absorption activities at comprehension and application levels of Bloom's taxonomy, indicating that they need more time in learning the knowledge. there are fewer examples of reorganization, denial and expulsion in general and all of them do not appear at synthesis and evaluation levels, which differ from program debugging in which all the six Bloom's levels appear.

the import coupling of an object constraint language (OCL) expression increases when the expression operates within a large context of a Unified Modelling Language (UML) model. the expression would thus exhibit a decrease in its comprehensibility, and in consequence, the maintainability of the OCL expressions could be affected, due to the fact that modelers need to know all the artifacts upon which the expression relies. In order to explain the cognitive complexity of modelers dealing with OCL expressions with high import- coupling we have carried out a think aloud experiment which is described in detail in this paper. the experiment is part of a project which we are developing with the goal of obtaining valid measures through which to assess the influence of import coupling on OCL expression maintainability. the empirical results show evidence that: (1) reified objects, problem objects and their relationships constitute the main components of the cognitive complexity of modelers; (2) modelers use different cognitive approaches to comprehend an OCL expression within a UML/OCL model.

With the growing acceptance of multi-core architectures by the industry, devising novel techniques to extract thread-level parallelism from sequential programs has become a fundamental need. the role of compiler along with programming model and architectural innovation is of utmost importance to fully realize the potential performance benefits of the multi-core architectures. this paper evaluates the capabilities and limitations of parallelizing compilers to extract parallelism automatically from the loops present in sequential programs. the applications from embedded benchmark suites EEMBC 1.1 and MiBench are analyzed using the Intel C++ 9.1 Compiler for Linux. the contributions of the paper are manifold: Firstly, the paper shows that on average 10% of the loops can be parallelized automatically by the Intel Compiler. Secondly, we have shown that the auto- parallelizable loops cover only about 12.5% of the total program execution-time. thirdly, we have explored the reasons behind the inability of the compiler to auto-parallelize the majority of the loops. We have found that on average 37.5% and 8% of the loops can't be auto-parallelized because of statically unknown loop trip count and probable data dependence, respectively. Finally, this study identifies the set of loops which comprises the most of the execution time of the programs and shows that compiler, on average, can automatically parallelize about 22% of such loops.

Memory system utilization is an important issue for many embedded systems that operate under tight memory limitations. this is a strong motivation for recent research on reducing the number of banks required during execution of a given application. Reducing memory space requirements of an application can bring three potential benefits. First, if we are to design a customized memory system for a given embedded application, reducing its memory requirements can cut the overall cost. Second, if we are to execute our application in a multi-programmed environment, the saved memory space can be used by other applications, thereby increasing the degree of multiprogramming. third, it is also possible to reduce the energy consumption in a banked memory system by reducing the amount of memory space occupied by application data and placing the unused banks into low-power operating modes. this paper proposes a novel memory saving strategy for array-dominated embedded applications. the idea is to exploit the value locality in array data (e.g., those from the multi-media domain) by storing arrays in a compressed form to save memory space. Based on the compressed forms of the input arrays, our compiler-based approach automatically determines the compressed forms of the intermediate and output arrays and also automatically restructures the application code so that we can also reduce execution time (by exploiting value locality). Our experimental results show that this scheme is very effective in practice and reduces the memory space requirements of the applications tested by 19% on average. the experimental results also show that the proposed approach reduces the execution cycles of the original codes by 14% on average

Application systems that utilize recognition technologies, such as speech recognition, provide human-machine interface that could aid people more easily in operating system device or help those who are physically unable to interact with computers through traditional input devices such as mouse or keyboard. As we have seen, speech recognition technology is widely used between the device interfaces and human. the common approached method to increase speech recognition function into devices is through low-level programmed wrappers. For getting that, first we must obtain the source code of system and have programming knowledge in order to perform it. In that, the speech commands are pre-defined for particular application systems, so user could not set or modify the commands to what they want especially. Even if the designer want to add or delete some speech commands, it also is not easy and is time consuming. In this research, we provide a general interfacing framework. Under this, user could set or modify speech commands conveniently and easily without the needs of the detailed system code, system design and programming knowledge. After speech commands are set by end user, interface would store these commands to database. When end user speak a command through interface, the interface would analyze and recognize it, and then interact directly with application systems through calling the API functions, we have done before, to control mouse moving and keyboard pressing. the proposed system could be applied to GUI based commercial software without accessing their internal code. When installing and executing our proposed interfacing framework under windows environment, user can interact with most of the application systems by controlling mouse moving, mouse jumping, mouse clicking, keyboard pressing and compound keyboard pressing through speech commands just like what we have done normally. Finally, we apply some examples to demonstrate the applicability and feasibility of

We describe our experience teaching programming and numerical methods to engineering students using Visual Python to exploit three dimensional real time visualisation. We describe the structure and content of this teaching module and evaluate the module after its delivery. We find that the students enjoy being able to visualise physical processes (even if these have effectively only 1 or 2 spatial degrees of freedom) and this improves the learning experience.

this paper describes the practices created, adopted and evolved in a Distributed Open Source Project (PyPy) project. PyPy is a hybrid project, combining the different aspects of Agile and Distributed Development within the context of an Open Source community. the project is partially funded by the European Commission through the 6th Framework Program. Influences and adoptions of techniques such as "sprinting" has been a core balancing act for the project since its inception. "Sprints" in the Python community differs from the Scrum version of sprints and in this paper we will present how this evolved agile method acts as a primary method of quality assuring the aspects of distributed and dispersed work style of the PyPy project and insures an ongoing interaction with the Open Source aspects of the project.

We present an evolutionary algorithm for the inference of context-free grammars from positive and negative examples. the algorithm is based on genetic programming and uses a local optimization operator that is capable of improving the learning task. Ordinary genetic operators are modified so as to bias the search. the system was evaluated using Tomita 's language examples and results were compared with another similar approach. Results show that the proposed approach is promising and more robust than the other one. © 2006 IEEE.
