Lilith is a general purpose tool to provide highly scalable, easy distribution of user code across a heterogeneous computing platform. Lilith's principal task is to span a heterogeneous tree of machines executing user-defined code in a scalable and secure fashion. Lilith will be used for controlling user processes as well as general system administrative tasks. Lilith is written in Java, taking advantage of Java's platform independence and intent to move code across networks. the design of Lilith provides hooks for experimenting with tree-spanning algorithms and security schemes. We present the Lilith object model, security scheme, and implementation, and present timing results demonstrating Lilith's scalable behavior.

Caching plays a vital role in the performance of any large-scale distributed system and, as the variety and number of Web applications grows, is becoming an increasingly important research topic within the Web community. Existing caching mechanisms are largely transparent to their users and cater for resources which are primarily read-only, offering little support for customisable or complex caching strategies. In this paper we examine the deficiencies in these mechanisms with regard to applications with requirements for shared access to data where clients may require a variety of consistency guarantees. We present ''open'' caching within an object-oriented framework, an approach to solving these problems which, instead of offering caching transparency makes the caching mechanism highly visible allowing great flexibility in caching choices. Our implementation is built upon the W3objects infrastructure and allows clients to make caching decisions for individual resources with minimal impact upon other resources which do not support our mechanisms. the Web frequently suffers from failures which affect the performance and consistency of applications run over it. An important fault-tolerance technique is the use of atomic actions (atomic transactions) for controlling operations on services. Atomic actions guarantee the consistency of applications despite concurrent accesses and failures. Techniques for implementing transactions on distributed objects are well-known: in order to become ''transaction aware'', an object requires facilities for concurrency control, persistence, and the ability to participate in a commit protocol. While it is possible to make server-side applications transactional, browsers typically do not possess such facilities: a situation which is likely to persist for the foreseeable future. therefore, the browser will not normally be able to take part in transactional applications. the paper presents a design and implementation of a scheme that does permit non-transactional browsers to participate in transactional applications, thereby providing much needed end-to-end transactional guarantees. A multidatabase system (MDBS) is a system that provides access to data from a collection of database systems (DBSs), called component DBSs, that are heterogeneous and distributed. the integration of the component DBSs into the MDBS is performed by a complex of functions termed a 'gateway'. this paper describes the design of a gateway based on the distributed object computing (DOC) approach, and compliant to the CORBA (Common object Request Broker Architecture) standard. the approach is shown to introduce savings in design complexity and costs. the details of the approach are described in a gateway case study for the integration of a relational DBS into a MDBS.

HIGHROBOT is an open workstation based robot control which has full access to the Internet and its Web-technologies. Here, the usage of Java-applets offers new applications in telerobotics. Additionally, the HIGHROBOT system offers access to high speed networks. this leads to a vast field of new applications which cannot be found in traditional control systems. In this paper we present a prototype controller implementation for a manipulator controlled via the Internet. the robot arm can be controlled running a Java applet on a remote system. Our object oriented software architecture is based on the design of a general application independent server concept that can be used in distributed object computing.

Intermetrics has created a new MOO server which improves upon previous MOO servers by persistence and concurrency, and by providing a more efficient implementation of the language. Our next version of the server will make it possible to distribute MOO command execution over a large number of machines. In keeping with centralized MOO systems, the system will be exceptionally evolvable. It will allow changes to things such as object inheritance hierarchies, properties and code, and have the changes be visible to every user without them even having to reenter the MUD world. the system will also handle server machines entering and leaving the system at arbitrary times. We briefly describe our new MOO server, and then describe a number of the issues that are involved in creating a distributed MUD server. We describe techniques that have been used by other distributed MUDs and then the approaches that we are using for our own.

As database technology advances rapidly, there are usually heterogeneous databases used by different departments in an enterprise. On the other hand, the object oriented technology is becoming the dominant application development paradigm. thus, there is a data modeling gap between applications and heterogeneous databases. We present some main architecture aspects of the system VHDBS which has been developed by an ongoing research project. this architecture provides a way to support cooperative access to distributed heterogeneous databases and to fill the data modeling gap in a distributed heterogeneous environment. Our work contributes not only to an implementation solution but also to an architecture framework and paradigmatic solution.

the paper introduces the RTM task graph model. RTM is a distributed operating system and scheduler for complex real time tasks developed at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, with a medium grained data flow model of computation. Tasks are linearly segmented (possibly with loops), but have arbitrary interconnectivity. this allows for decomposable tasks while avoiding the complications of a full fledged hierarchical model, simplifying scheduling, resource allocation. Our description of the task graph model in RTM can largely also be viewed as a list of desirable characteristics of any task graph based environment for real time design and implementation.

the use of object-based programming techniques helps to reduce the cost of software development and maintenance, due to the benefits of reuse, information hiding and encapsulation. this is especially helpful in complex, real-time systems that are highly parallel and distributed, due to their magnitude. the paper presents a semi-preemption execution model of object-based real-time systems that simplifies reasoning about the quality of particular process-to-processor assignments. the model is used to define system properties such as inter-process parallelism, processor utilization and inter-processor communication. Additionally, we present an innovative assignment algorithm that incorporates feasibility constraints, and is guided by an objective that balances minimum communication against maximum parallelism. this work is part of a complete assignment and pre-run-time scheduling approach for distributed real-time systems.< >

In object-based design and implementation, application programs are constructed by layering reusable abstract data type (ADT) module instances. An ADT instance is often used to manage more than one data object. there is contention for getting access to the instance if the multiple data objects need to be accessed concurrently. To resolve the contention, the ADT instance is replicated and the copies are placed in different processors so that each of the multiple clients can use the clones to concurrently access different data objects. To exploit the concurrency automatically, program dependence relations are analyzed. In this paper, the program dependence graph (PDG), which was previously used to describe data and control dependence relations among statements, is extended to include instance dependence relations. Several theorems are proved with respect to the instance dependence properties of the new PDG graph. A technique is presented for determining the upper bound on the number of clones of each module instance that can be used concurrently. the technique employs dependence analysis techniques at the statement, method, and instance levels of granularities.< >
