Service providers as we know them nowadays are the always-on "static" web service providers, that aim at Five9 availability (99.999%). Formal, or de-facto, standards, such as WSDL and BPEL, have become technology enablers for the easy discovery, use and coordination of such services. However, we envisage tomorrow's services to become increasingly pervasive, being deployed within buildings, transport systems, markets, as well as people portable devices. Such services will be, by their own nature, simple and fine grained, as a consequence, service composition will become crucial to deliver rich functionalities that satisfy end users requests. Composing services in mobile environments opens up significant challenges. In particular, the Five9 availability assumption no longer holds: the higher the dynamic nature of the environment, the higher the chances that services will move out-of-reach before the composition completes, causing the service as a whole to fail. We argue that, in order to enable the successful completion of compound services, the reliability of the composition must be measured and reasoned about. In order to do so, we propose to dynamically deploy a prediction model to estimate the duration of colocation between component services. these estimates are fed in input to a service composition semantics reasoner, which then autonomically selects those providers, within the current environment, that maximise the chances of successful compound service completion. We demonstrate the positive impact that the reliability reasoning has onto the ratio of successfully completed compound services in a typical human movement scenario.

the Web Servers are globally accepted as the backbone of the Internet. the researchers in the area of the enterprise computing have studied, analyzed and implemented several architectures to optimize the performance of the large-scale Web Servers. However, due to the convergence of the IT and the mobile communication domains, the mobile nodes now are also been viewed as the service hosting platforms. the aim of this article is to present an optimized Mobile Web Server architecture for provisioning the Mobile Web Services (MobWS) as lengthy processes. For that reason, the asynchronous interaction strategy is derived, and later used to comprehensively discuss the server architecture, which is based on the Representational State Transfer (REST) design principles. the manuscript presents a detailed performance evaluation of the architecture and compares the results with the server based on the Simple object Access Protocol (SOAP) standard. the results show promising performance improvements due to the reduced payload requirements of the REST server.

We present an object-oriented distributed finite element method (FEM) solver for three-dimensional scattering problems, implemented on a network of workstations. the solution of the resulting sparse linear system is performed using the conjugate orthogonal conjugate gradient method. the entire implementation is based on the Java programming language, and the distributed solution is achieved via the use of mobile agent technology. Since the paper aims mainly to demonstrate the benefits of using Java and mobile agents as the technologies to develop complex FEM applications and implement them in a distributed environment, its main core is devoted to a thorough description of the distributed-object-oriented implementation, focusing on inter-agent communication and synchronization aspects. Numerical results are presented, which prove that our approach is a promising technique for the efficient solution of complex FEM modeling problems.

Replication is a primary means to achieve fault tolerance in distributed systems. While replication techniques are well known and have been widely applied in distributed object and database systems, they have not yet been extensively used in service oriented systems. However if the success of service oriented computing shall continue in critical settings, replication middleware will play a crucial role in service oriented infrastructures. thus, we contribute with a discussion of our experiences in building distributed object and service replication middleware and present the main lessons learned. Our conclusions are drawn from several replication middleware implementations built upon J2EE, NET CORBA, and Axis2.

As the era of IoT (Internet of things) and Edge computing emerges, there is a rising need for real-time applications in the domain of computer vision. the increase in hardware computing capabilities gave rise to applications of neural networks in various fields. Implementing IoT with neural networks in domains like image and video recognition has shown promising performance when deployed in complex environments. there is an emerging demand for applications that require data computation in real-time with low latency. To address these issues, while keeping in mind the computing capabilities of IoT devices, we seek to develop a framework for efficient object detection on a distributed constrained platform system. We employed PYNQ Z1 AP-SoC (All Programmable System-on-Chip) as the IoT edge node platform and integrated state-of-the-art algorithms for object detection. the distributed architecture is robust and exploits the heterogeneous computing capability of the PYNQ platform. the proposed work is on a wireless distributed network with minimal communication latency. We demonstrate the framework for low frame rate applications where the scenery is not changing rapidly. We were able to achieve 19.23 frames per second with three IoT nodes with Binarized Neural Network (BNN) image classification algorithm. the frames per second rate is directly proportional to the number of nodes in the network. the communication latency can be offset by the scalability offered by the distributed framework.

Knowledge workers already face a broad range of tools to support their work, e.g. adaptive case management systems, tailored information systems, groupware, and other (process) support systems. Case data is scattered across many systems, and the overlapping structured, semi-structured, and adhoc processes involved further impede keeping track of related data and activities. Organizations are socio-technical entities, and interactions have significant impact on their success. Today, around 50% of the work in the US is knowledge work, and other countries show a similar tendency. Improving integration of appropriate tools for knowledge work and augmenting support for interactions therefore offers to increase productivity in a very influential part of the workforce. Knowledge workers are well aware of the pragmatic intention of their communicative acts, but currently their systems are not. We suggest to use Speech Act theory to enable useful inferences and to improve integration of the various tools for knowledge work. A focus on interactions raises awareness for the pragmatic intention and commitments in particular. It can help providing line markings for knowledge workers by facilitating compliance monitoring for interactions and artifacts stemming from many participating systems and manual documentation. Interactions already tie many separate systems together, and standardizing as well as partially automating them can therefore further simplify integration. Speechact-based adaptive case management offers to increase process transparency, enable useful inferences, and integrate structured, semi-structured, and ad-hoc processes.

Primus Epic(TM) is an all-new integrated avionics system for business, regional and general aviation. Honeywell international Inc. follows the object Oriented paradigm and the programming language C++ for certain software components on systems developed for the PRIMUS EPIC system. While C++ programming language offers several advantages, it also has several features that can make it undesirable for use in airborne systems. the object Orientation concept has several features that, if not controlled properly, can lead to unknown configurations of object code and unverified code. this is highly undesirable for avionics software that needs certification involving statement and code coverage. this paper highlights the issues with C++ certification for avionics and provides solutions for some of the issues.

Adaptability for distributed object-oriented enterprise frameworks in multimedia technology is a critical mission for system evolution. Today, building adaptive services is a complex task due to lack of adequate framework support in the distributed computing systems. In this paper, we propose a Metalevel Component-Based Framework which uses distributed computing design patterns as components to develop an adaptable pattern-oriented framework for distributed computing applications. We describe our approach of combining a meta-architecture with a pattern-oriented framework, resulting in an adaptable framework which provides a mechanism to facilitate system evolution. this approach resolves the problem of dynamic adaptation in the framework, which is encountered in most distributed multimedia applications. the proposed architecture of the pattern-oriented framework has the abilities to dynamically adapt new design patterns to address issues in the domain of distributed computing and they can be woven together to shape the framework in future. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

the paper describes design and implementation of software infrastructure for building augmented reality applications for ubiquitous computing environments. Augmented reality, is one of the most important techniques to achieve the vision of ubiquitous computing. Traditional toolkits for aligmented reality provide the high level abstraction that makes it easy to but. Id augmented reality, applications. However, the applications programmers need to contemplate distribution and context-awareness that make the development of applications very hard, but they are necessary to build ubiquitous computing environments. Our infrastructure provides the high level abstraction and hides distribution and con text-awareness from programmers. therefore, the cost to develop augmented reality applications will be reduced dramatically by using our middleware infrastructure.

We discuss how to invoke a method on multiple object replicas in a quorum-based way. Suppose each instance of a method t on replicas of an object x invokes another method u on replicas in a quorum of an object y. Here, the method u is redundantly invoked multiple times on some replicas of the object y. If each instance of the method t issues a method to its own quorum, more number of replicas are manipulated than the quorum number this is quorum expansion. We discuss a protocol to invoke methods on replicas in a nested manner without the redundant invocation and quorum expansion. We evaluate the protocol on how many replicas are manipulated and requests are issued.
