the UNICORE Grid system provides a seamless, secure and intuitive access to distributed Grid resources. In recent years, UNICORE 5 is used as a well-tested Grid middleware system in production Grids (e.g. DEISA, D-Grid) and at man), supercomputer centers world-wide. Beyond this production usage, UNICORE serves as a solid basis in many European and international research projects and business scenarios from T-Systems, Philips Research, Intel, Fujitsu and others. To foster ongoing developments in multiple projects, UNICORE is open source under BSD license at SourceForge. More recently, the new Web services-based UNICORE 6 has become available that is based on open standards such as the Web Services Addressing (WS-A) and the Web Services Resource Framework (WS-RF) and thus conforms to the Open Grid Services Architecture (OGSA) of the Open Grid Forum (OGF). In this paper we present the evolution from production UNICORE 5 to the open standards-based UNICORE 6 and its various Web services-based interfaces. It describes the interface integration of emerging open standards such as OGSA-BES and OGSA-RUS and thus provides an overview of UNICORE 6.

Structuring real-time concurrent programs in the form of groups of fixed-priority processes is an old art which is appropriate for only a small fraction of modem real-time distributedcomputing application systems. However, it is still practiced on the basis of an insufficient technical foundation. One of the basic issues in using the fixed-priority process structuring approach is to avoid the priority inversion phenomenon. It is argued that priority inversions are essentially due to the inappropriate approach used for structuring programs including the specification of the policy for allocating resources. Several basic program structuring techniques which are effective means of avoiding priority inversions are presented.

the object-based storage system stripes data across large numbers of object-based storage devices (OSDs) to enable parallel data access. Subsequently, the workload presented to the individual OSD will be quite different from that of general purpose file systems. However, many distributed file systems employ general-purpose file systems as their underlying file system. this paper presents a Versatile object-based File System (referred to as V-OBFS), an extent and B+tree based file system designed for use in OSDs. the V-OBES implements flexible disk layout with multiple block size and differentiated free space management for both small objects and large objects. In addition, proposed V-OBFS enables fast object search and mapping between object ID and physical location with an efficient object namespace management. Our experiments show that our user-level implementation of V-OBFS can efficiently prevent file system fragmentation and outperforms Linux Ext2 and Ext3 by a factor of two or three.

Lilith is a general purpose tool to provide highly scalable, easy distribution of user code across a heterogeneous computing platform. Lilith's principal task is to span a heterogeneous tree of machines executing user-defined code in a scalable and secure fashion. Lilith will be used for controlling user processes as well as general system administrative tasks. Lilith is written in Java, taking advantage of Java's platform independence and intent to move code across networks. the design of Lilith provides hooks for experimenting with tree-spanning algorithms and security schemes. We present the Lilithobject model, security scheme, and implementation, and present timing results demonstrating Lilith's scalable behavior.
