One of the main characteristics of renewal energy is that it is available at a specific moment in time, thus we can consider this a renewal energy generation time pattern. Similar, in turn demand for energy, or consumption have a specific time pattern. In the ideal case to minimize energy storage challenges and to efficiently use energy, generation time pattern should match as much as possible with consumption energy pattern. In the current article we improve this pattern match between generation and consumption using artificial neural network.

the increasing integration of Renewable Energy Resources (RER) and the role of Electric Energy Storage (EES) in distribution systems has created interest in using energy management strategies. EES has become a suitable resource to manage energy consumption and generation in smart grid. Optimize scheduling of EES can also maximize retailer's profit by introducing energy time-shift opportunities. this paper proposes a new strategy for scheduling EES in order to reduce the impact of electricity market price and load uncertainty on retailers' profit. the proposed strategy optimizes the cost of purchasing energy with the objective of minimizing surplus energy cost in hedging contract. A case study is provided to demonstrate the impact of the proposed strategy on retailers' financial benefit.

Recent work has shown that machine learning can automate and in some cases outperform hand crafted compiler optimizations. Central to such an approach is that machine learning techniques typically rely upon summaries or features of the program. the quality of these features is critical to the accuracy of the resulting machine learned algorithm;no machine learning method will work well with poorly chosen features. However, due to the size and complexity of programs, theoretically there are an infinite number of potential features to choose from. the compiler writer now has to expend effort in choosing the best features from this space. this paper develops a novel mechanism to automatically find those features which most improve the quality of the machine learned heuristic. the feature space is described by a grammar and is then searched with genetic programming and predictive modeling. We apply this technique to loop unrolling in GCC 4.3.1 and evaluate our approach on a Pentium 6. On a benchmark suite of 57 programs, GCC's hard-coded heuristic achieves only 3% of the maximum performance available, while a state of the art machine learning approach with hand-coded features obtains 59%. Our feature generation technique is able to achieve 76% of the maximum available speedup, outperforming existing approaches.

More and more deep learning methods are applied in unmanned or assisted driving, and have achieved very excellent performance. this paper describes long short-term memory recurrent neural networks used in assisted driving, which can capture the long temporal dependencies of multiple vehicles sensors' data, supporting drivers' behavior analysis on vehicles. Some optimization methods, such as model compression, weight quantization, adaptive window segmentation, are applied to make the deep network faster and less power. therefore, it can be easily deployed on smart-phones and other embedded devices due to its moderate energy consumption and low latency. the architecture was trained in a sequence-to-sequence prediction manner, and it explicitly learns to predict the driving patterns given the temporal context. the experiment is executed on the smart-phone. Experimental results for different parameters are also presented in the paper. At last, we reduce the model size to 77 KB, the processing time to 4.27 ms, and the power overhead is 7.7 mW, the percentage of improved performance by our optimizations is over 60%.

Hydrogen generation by methane steam reforming in a thermally coupled membrane reformer-combustor has been experimentally studied. the concentric three-compartment reactor indirectly couples methane steam reforming with catalytic methane combustion and with a Pd-Ag membrane, to provide extrapure hydrogen. the reactor call be independently operated at steady state with the enthalpy required for the steam reforming and for heat losses provided by methane oxidation. the study focuses oil the experimental demonstration of two approaches for the optimization of hydrogen generation in terms of power Output and process efficiency: increasing the membrane separation ability and recycling reformer products to the combustion section.

Photovoltaic generation system (PGS) has become an attractive option among renewable energy sources because it is clean, maintenance-free and environmental friendly. For large PGS, the probability for partially shaded condition (PSC) to occur is high. Under PSC, when the entire array does not receive uniform insolation, the P-V curves of PGS get more complex, exhibiting multiple peaks. In this paper, a particle swarm optimization (PSO)-based MPPT algorithm for PGS operating under PSC is proposed. the problem formulation and design procedure are described and explained in detail. the proposed method boasts the advantages such as easy to implement, system-independent and high tracking efficiency. To validate the correctness of the proposed method, simulation and experimental results of a 2 kW PGS will also be provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

To solve large-scale constraint satisfaction problems, CSPs, ant colony optimization, ACO, based meta-heuristics has been used. However, the naive ACO based method is sometimes inefficient because the method may require much search time due to ant's reconstructing candidate solutions. We have applied an ant colony optimization based meta-heuristics with cunning ants in which artificial ants construct a candidate solution by partially using building blocks, or useful partial solutions, of the candidate solution constructed at the previous search generation to CSP instances. In this paper, we propose a cunning ant system with several ant colonies each of which has different search strategies, i.e., borrowing partial solutions generated at the previous cycle. We experimentally demonstrated that our method can be more efficient than the ant system.

Resource-constrained devices for embedded systems are becoming increasingly important. In such systems, memory is highly restrictive, making code size in most cases even more important than performance. Compared to more traditional platforms, memory is a larger part of the cost and code occupies much of it. Despite that, compilers make little effort to reduce code size. One key technique attempts to merge the bodies of similar functions. However, production compilers only apply this optimization to identical functions, while research compilers improve on that by merging the few functions with identical control-flow graphs and signatures. Overall, existing solutions are insufficient and we end up having to either increase cost by adding more memory or remove functionality from programs. We introduce a novel technique that can merge arbitrary functions through sequence alignment, a bioinformatics algorithm for identifying regions of similarity between sequences. We combine this technique with an intelligent exploration mechanism to direct the search towards the most promising function pairs. Our approach is more than 2.4x better than the state-of-the-art, reducing code size by up to 25%, with an overall average of 6%, while introducing an average compilation-time overhead of only 15%. When aided by profiling information, this optimization can be deployed without any significant impact on the performance of the generated code.

Visualizing computational processes of optimization passes helps to reason about, and to gain insight into, the inner workings of the optimization passes. In this paper, we visualize the computational processes of two procedural abstraction passes. We modified two procedural abstraction post pass optimizers to visualize for each the difference in machine code before and after optimization by drawing abstracted fragments in the original code. We then explain how the generated visualizations aid in better understanding the optimization passes and eventually improve them.
