While past research presents objects as essential entities in task modeling, they are in fact rarely used. In the first tool that truly considered objects. K-MADe, two main reasons may explain this limited use: an incomplete module of object description (in the tool, the expression coverage of the object concept is not wide enough) and the usability problems of K-MADe's specific interface. this paper presents a study on the object expression coverage. From case studies, we identify limitations and we infer modification on the K-MADe object entity definitions. these modifications aim to increase the expressive power of objects.

In this paper we discuss techniques on how task models can enhance visualization of the usability test log. Evaluation of the usability tests is a traditional method in user centered design. It is a part of the methodology for design of usable products. We developed a tool for visualization of usability logs that uses the hierarchical structure of the task models to group and visualize observers' annotations. this way of visualization is very natural and allows investigation of the test dynamics and comparison of participant's behavior in various parts of the test. We also describe methods of visualization of multiple logs that allow for comparison of the test results between participants. For that purpose we present a new visualization method based on alignment of the visual representations of tasks, where binding between the task model and the log visualization is used. Finally, we present an evaluation of our tool on two usability tests, which were conducted in our laboratory and we discuss observed findings.

Model-based approaches describe the process of creating UI models and transforming them to build a concrete UI. Developers specify interactive systems on a more abstract and conceptual level instead of dealing with low level implementation. However, specifying the various models is a complex and time consuming task. Pattern-based approaches encapsulate frequently used solutions in form of building blocks that developers may combine to create a user interface model. thus they enforce reuse and readability and reduce complexity. In this paper we present a comprehensive framework that unites model-based and pattern-driven approaches. We introduce the "Patterns In Modelling" (PIM) tool, that implements this framework. We will demonstrate the functioning of the tool by using an illustrative example. We primarily focus on the creation of the task model and give a brief outlook how patterns will be applied to the other levels within the framework.

designers and developers of virtual environments have to consider that providing adaptation in virtual environments is important to comply with users' different characteristics. Due to the many possibilities of adaptation that a designer can think of, it is necessary to support the integration of adaptation in the application in a rapid and practical way. We propose to achieve this by adopting the VR-DeMo model-based user interface design (MBUID) process which supports context. In this paper, we strive to integrate adaptation in virtual environments using a context-aware design process and present a validation of this approach with two case studies, namely supporting the adaptation of switching between interaction techniques and adapting the interaction technique itself. these case studies learned us that adaptation can be easily realized using our context-aware model-based design process.

Emerging ubiquitous environments raise the need to support multiple interaction modalities in diverse types of devices. designing multimodal interfaces for ubiquitous environments using development tools creates challenges since target platforms support different resources and interfaces. Model-based approaches have been recognized as useful for managing the increasing complexity consequent to the many available interaction platforms. However, they have usually focused on graphical and/or vocal modalities. this paper presents a solution for enabling the development of tilt-based hand gesture and graphical modalities for mobile devices in a multimodal user interface development tool. the challenges related to developing gesture-based applications for various types of devices involving mobile devices are discussed in detail. the possible solution presented is based. on a logical description language for hand-gesture user interfaces. Such language allows us to obtain a user interface implementation on the target mobile platform. the solution is illustrated with an example application that can be accessed from both the desktop and mobile device supporting tilt-based gesture interaction.

this paper presents an approach of generating the user interface from the task model. Our work is situated in the course of approaches based on models. this approach called TOOD (task Object Oriented design) is based on a formal notation, which gives quantitative results that may be checked by designers and provide the possibility of performing mathematical verifications on the models. the modelling formalism is based on the joint use of the object approach and high level Petri nets. the TOOD method integrates different models (task model, user model, local model of the interface, abstract model of the interface, and model of the implementation) and their relations. An example, extracted from the air traffic control, is presented to illustrate TOOD methodology. Copyright 2005 ACM.

Zoomable user interfaces are more attractive because they offer the possibility to present information and to support actions according to a "focus+context" method: while a context of use is preserved or presented in a more compact way, the focus can be achieved on some part of the information and actions, enabling the end user to focus on one part at a time. While this interaction technique can be straightforwardly applied for manipulating objects of the same type (e.g., cells in a spreadsheet or appointments in a calendar), it is less obvious how to present interactive tasks of an information system where tasks may involve very different amount and types of information and actions. For this purpose, this paper introduces a metric based on a task model in order to decide what portion of a task model should lead to a particular user interface container, group, or fragment, while preserving the task structure. Each branch of the task model is assigned to a weight that will lead to such a container, group, or fragment depending on parameters computed on variables belonging to the context of use. In this way, not only the task structure is preserved, but also the decomposition of the user interface into elements depends on the context of use, particularly the constraints imposed by the computing platform.

the context of this work is usability engineering for mutimodal interaction. In contrast to other work that concentrates on prototyping toolkits or abstract guidelines, this research focuses on user interface patterns for multimodal interaction. designing multimodal applications requires several skills ranging from design and implementation. thus, different kinds of patterns (from architecture patterns to user interface patterns) can be applied to this field. this work focuses on user-task near user interface patterns. At first, a traditional approach of modality selection based on task- and context-based rules is presented. Next, a twofold process of pattern mining is presented. In the first phase, pattern candidates are derived top-down from proven knowledge about how multimodality enhances usability. In the second phase, literature is mined for real solutions to underpin these pattern candidates and find new ones. Along with this, relationships between patterns are depicted.

the design of interactive systems for an ambient intelligent environment poses many challenges because of the great diversity in devices the user has control of and the user's situation imposed by the environment. Although task-centered interface design is an established approach for traditional form-based and even for multi-device user interfaces, this design approach is, in its current form, not ready for the design of user interfaces for ambient intelligent environments. In this paper we propose a task-centered approach to design interaction mechanisms for ambient intelligent environments by means of visualization and simulation. We focus on three different concepts that are important to support this approach: situated task allocations, user interface distributions and visualization of context influences. Because the execution of a task depends strongly on the situation or context of use, the consequences of a context change on the execution of a task specification should be communicated with the task designer during the design process. the designer should be able to define the possibilities to execute a task while taking into account constraints imposed by the environment of the user. A tool to support this approach using visualization of the environment and simulation of the interface configurations is introduced. Copyright 2005 ACM.
