this paper describes the rationale behind a user interface requirements management notation and a supporting tool suite. the notation is being developed to facilitate the design of interactions based on an account of non-functional requirements (NFRs), thus the acronym NfRn for the technique. NfRn is a graphical notation which is used to specify an interactive system's global execution context (GEC). the resulting depiction is referred to as the Global Execution Context graph (GECg). the GECg is a visual construction, which consists of nodes, representing interaction scenarios, and directed links representing scenario relationships designating alternate execution, concurrency, ordering, and set-oriented relationships between two scenario nodes. the technique is particularly useful for specifying certain NFRs - such as adaptability, adaptivity, scalability and portability - which are especially relevant for anytime, anywhere access. In the paper, we demonstrate the application of the technique in the context of an on-going research project aiming to build an 'electronic village' of local interest in the region of Crete.

Process- and task-driven workflow support has become vital for enterprises as they operate in an increasingly networked business environment. thereby business process specifications represent boundary objects not only between different organizational units, but also between technology and business operations. Process specifications need to be integrated and implemented in a flexible way for actual work-task support. Although several business process techniques and technologies are in place there are still several transformational steps to be performed when implementing business operations based on detailed work descriptions. One effective way to prevent incoherencies is role-specific and task-driven modeling, representation, and processing of business operations. the introduced approach is termed subject-oriented business process management, as it ensures coherence between modeling and execution through focusing on the communication flow among process participants (subjects) in the course of work-task accomplishment.

In this paper we discuss an approach for linking GUI specifications to more abstract dialogue models and supporting an evolutionary design process. these specifications are linked to task models describing behavioural characteristics. First prototypes of interactive systems are interactively generated. the automatically generated XUL specifications are refined using a GUI editor, which allows replacing of user interface elements by other elements or components. Components are predesigned parts of user interfaces, and could optionally be parameterised. this enables us to support GUI design using *** illustration we are going to show a design cycle from task model to abstract user interfaces and finally to a concrete user interface. the design process is supported by ***, a proposal is presented of how to keep connections between concrete user interface (CUI), abstract user interface (AUI) and a task model. these connections can be used to propagate changes in a task model or an AUI only to affected parts of a CUI, instead of recreating the whole CUI after a modification has been *** this paper we primarily focus on deletion, moving and adding tasks to an AUI and the implication of these procedures to a CUI. More complicated problems like splitting or merging of tasks are not addressed in this *** avoiding of unnecessary recreation processes for a CUI can reduce the amount of time and work needed in model-driven software development. Digital tabletops are emerging interactive systems that support group collaborations. To utilize digital tabletops for agile planning meetings, we migrated a desktop based planning tool - AgilePlanner to a digital tabletop. this paper reports on challenges of the migration and illustrates differences between user interactions on a digital tabletop and on a desktop. Moreover, lessons and experiences learnt from our design process are highlighted to facilitate future tabletop application design.

Since mobile devices are expected to become more and more influenced by various kinds of context information in the near future, context needs to be taken into consideration when user interfaces are developed for these systems. When user interfaces are being developed using a model-based approach, developers need to design several models where the aggregate describes the entire user interface. these models tend to be very complex: models for applications where a lot of interaction is required can be huge and are mutually connected. this is in particular the case when external context information can act on the user interface. In this paper we describe a development process for context-aware user interfaces. We focus on the design part of the development process with attention to tool support for constructing, editing and viewing the models. Copyright 2005 ACM.

With the shift of networked software applications away from the desktop computers and into home appliances comes the challenge of finding new ways to model this type of software. the most important home appliance that has new found computing capabilities is the television set. through television people can now be participants instead of viewers, and use interactive software to enter the participative stage. Staged participatory multimedia events are a subset of this kind of interactive software that have a predefined temporal structure that lets television viewers and mobile users become participants in a distributed multimedia event. In this paper, we introduce an interaction model that is part of modelling language for staged participatory multimedia events. We show how the language can be mapped on UML constructs and shortly discuss related work using a common example.

Model-based user interface (UI) development represents a significant evolution in the process of UI design. Most of currently model-based methodologies start the acquisition process of the interaction description (concrete models) from the task, domain and user descriptions (abstract models). this is basically a process of elicitation and mapping of elements of a model in another one. the major drawback concerning this approach is the lack of definitions of appropriate mechanisms that automatically promote the actualization of the abstract models (source) facing modifications of the concrete models (target). Such lack of actualization introduces inconsistencies between the different models and makes it difficult and even impossible to create the final user interface by doing several iterations over the models being used. In this paper we have proposed mechanisms of maintenance of the consistency between interaction and task models within an UI design environment, MEDITE+. A script model that is intermediate between the model of the task and the model of the interaction supports the definition of these mechanisms. the effects in the involved models using these mechanisms are shown in practical examples.
