A bilevel optimization problem formulation based on mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints (MPEC) to coordinate longer-(LthS) and shorter-term hydro-thermal scheduling problems (SthS), as an alternative perspective to classical decomposition strategies is presented. the motivation to use MPEC to formulate the coordination of LthS and SthS models as an equilibrium problem is both educational and methodological. It allows us to learn from a single and consistent framework how the optimal solution is affected by inconsistencies in LthS and SthS modeling assumptions. Secondly, its methodological motivation is that of the one-level equivalent formulation of MPEC enabling the devise of approximate dynamic coordination strategies aiming to minimize these inconsistencies while keeping additional computational burden low. In this paper we explore the first motivation by presenting two small, simple examples in different economic scenarios: a classical monopoly model with central planning, and a competitive market model with a price maker hydroelectric producer.

Site layout planning (SLP) is an essential step for an efficient and safe construction environment. A well-designed construction site helps in increasing the productivity and safety of construction operations and in reducing the project's cost and duration. the main purpose of SLP is to manage available spaces on the construction site and to select appropriate locations for the temporary facilities (TF) by considering all the constraints between TFs and PFs (permanent facilities). Previously developed models vary in their scopes, objectives and approaches by providing enough solutions to the existing problems due to the complexity that is included in the SLP process. this paper proposes a framework to develop a model for site layout planning that integrates Building information modeling (BIM) and Geographic information system (GIS). the proposed model will assist practitioners in planning and designing a safer and conflict-free construction site in an attempt to provide comprehensive, flexible, and practical solutions that are not covered in the existing models. the model consists of five modules: a 3D modeling module that links BIM and GIS tools;a scheduling module that automatically calculates the durations of the TFs based on project's activities;a temporary facility library (TFL) pertaining the physical and functional attributes and constraints in a geodatabase;a 4D modeling module that shows the progress of construction and of placing the TFs;and a time-space conflict (TSC) module that uses detection tool to forecast conflicts and clashes so that the layout of the site is adjusted accordingly until no conflict is detected. the successful development of the model would partially fill the needs of the AEC industry to achieve more accurate and reliable solutions to the SLP issues. © 2017 by Canadian Society for Civil Engineering. Cloud computing has emerged as a new approach to bring computing as a service, in both academia and industry. One of the challenging issues is scientific workflow execution, where the job scheduling problem becomes more complex, especially when communication processes are taken into account. To provide good performance, many algorithms have been designed for distributed environments. However, these algorithms are not adapted to the uncertain and dynamic nature of cloud computing. In this paper, we present a general view on scheduling problems in cloud computing with communication, and compare existed solutions based on three models of cloud applications named CU-DAG, EB-DAG and CA-DAG. We formulate the problem and review several workflow scheduling algorithms. We discuss the main difficulties of using existed application models in the domain of computations on clouds. Finally, we show that our CA-DAG approach, based on separate vertices for computing and communications, and introducing communication awareness, allows us to mitigate uncertainty in a more efficient way.

Any assembly line planning (ALP) problem requires the knowledge of multitude of planners and is therefore the interface between the product-oriented and process-oriented planning process. the assembly line planning process (i.e., assembly task definition, time analysis, product-oriented assembly task sequencing, assembly line balancing and assembly line sequencing and scheduling) can be associated as the gateway between the fuzzy front end and the fuzzy back end of the innovation process. As ALP can be solved using solution search approaches, the formalization of the required information is the key to be able find at least a feasible, preferably a satisfying at most optimal solution. the input to solve the ALP are optimization objective(s), a precedence graph and further restrictions to consider. As decision making problems are widely researched, the collaboration for the precedence graph and the restriction modeling is regarded for the ALP. As the Collaborative Precedence and Constraint Modeling (CPCM) has also to meet the requirements of the solution method. In this case genetic algorithms (GA) is used for finding solution to the problem. the used algorithm for solution search is fast and state of the art, but also requires uniform input data. Hence, only an acyclic precedence and constraint digraph is computable in an adequate way. As soon multiple planners work jointly together within a virtual environment, only locking or conflict resolution approaches are offered to generate a computable precedence and constraint model for the solving an ALP using GA. As locking is a practical way from the technical point of view, it does not meet the requirements of the planners to model relevant precedence and constraint relations of the regarded elements (tasks, stations, resources and line segments). Modelling and simulation assist in decision support or planning activities by allowing efficient exploration of multiple scenarios in a situation where testing in a real setting is impractical. this exploration is often done by varying numerical parameters in the model such as physical dimensions or speed in order to find the optimal configuration. However, for certain problems, in order to find optimal solutions it is beneficial to vary the algorithms that are used to implement the behaviour of the model. For example, when calculating optimised routes for harvesters and other vehicles in a harvest operation, the choice of optimisation algorithms is an important part of the problem. Traditional modelling and simulation techniques do not allow us to vary algorithms across simulations effectively. In this paper, we address this issue by applying the strategy pattern from software engineering to the construction of a formal model that enables different combinations of harvest optimisation algorithms to be analysed effectively. this approach can be generalised to other planning activities where multiple algorithms need to be considered.

the timeline-based approach to planning represents an effective alternative to classical planning in complex domains where different types of reasoning are required in parallel. the iLoC domain-independent planning system takes inspiration from both Constraint Programming (CP) and Logic Programming (LP). By solving both planning and scheduling problems in a uniform schema, iLoC is particularly suitable for complex domains arising from real world dynamic scenarios. Despite the planner captures elements that are very relevant for applications, its theory is quite challenging from a computational point of view and its performance are rather weak compared with those of state-of-the-art classical planners, particularly on those domains where such planners, typically, excel. In previous works, a resolution algorithm for the iLoC system has been proposed and enhanced with some (static and dynamic) heuristics that help the solving process. In this paper we propose a first improvement of the data structures underlying the proposed heuristics, producing a more informed heuristic and studying its effectiveness as a solving strategy. We perform tests on different bench-mark problems from classical planning domains like the Blocks World to more challenging temporally expressive problems like the Temporal Machine Shop and the Cooking Carbonara problems, showing how the iLoC planner compares with respect to other state-of-the-art planners.

Optimization models for railway traffic rescheduling in the last decade tend to develop along two main streams. One the one hand, train scheduling models strives to incorporate any relevant detail of the railway infrastructure having an impact on the feasibility and quality of the solutions from the viewpoint of operations managers. On the other hand, delay management models focus on the impact of rescheduling decisions on the quality of service perceived by the passengers. models in the first stream are mainly microscopic, while models in the second stream are mainly macroscopic. this paper aims at merging these two streams of research by developing microscopic passenger-centric models, solution algorithms and lower bounds. Fast iterative algorithms are proposed, based on a decomposition of the problem and on the exact resolution of the sub-problems. A new lower bound is proposed, consisting of the resolution of a set of min-cost flow problems with activation constraints. Computational experiments, based on a real-world Dutch railway network, show that good quality solutions and lower bounds can be found within a limited computation time.

Timeline-based planning has been successfully applied in several contexts to solve planning and scheduling (P&S) problems. A key enabling feature of the timeline-based approach to planning is its capability of dealing with temporal flexibility. Temporal flexibility is an important feature in real world scenarios. Indeed, it can be exploited by an executive system for robust on-line execution of flexible plans in order to absorb possible delays during the execution. In this regard, it is useful to define quality metrics to evaluate the robustness of flexible timeline-based plans. In this paper, a set of quality metrics for flexible timelinebased plans are defined and discussed when applied to a specific timeline-based framework. In fact, we consider the framework EPSL, developed to support the design of P&S applications, that allows the definition of different planners endowed with specific heuristics. then, an experimental analysis is presented exploiting the planners to solve planning problem instances related to a real-world manufacturing case study. And, finally, an evaluation of planners performance is presented and discussed comparing results also considering robustness of generated plans.

the global growth in urbanisation increases the demand for services including road transport infrastructure, presenting challenges in terms of mobility. these trends are occurring in the context of concerns around environmental issues of poor air quality and transport related carbon dioxide emissions. One out of several ways to help meet these challenges is in the intelligent routing of road traffic through congested urban areas. Our goal is to show the feasibility of using automated planning to perform this routing, taking into account a knowledge of vehicle types, vehicle emissions, route maps, air quality zones, etc. Specifically focusing on air quality concerns, in this paper we investigate the problem where the goals are to minimise overall vehicle delay while utilising network capacity fully, and respecting air quality limits. We introduce an automated planning approach for the routing of traffic to address these areas. the approach has been evaluated on micro-simulation models that use real-world data supplied by our industrial partner. Results show the feasibility of using AI planning technology to deliver efficient routes for vehicles that avoid the breaking of air quality limits, and that balance traffic flow through the network.
