A lot of work has been done to address shot detection, e.g. pixel-by-pixel comparisons and histogram comparisons. But gray or color histograms ignore the problem caused by lighting condition variations inherent in the video production process especially in TV news reports. So they often can be confused when such incidents occur. Color Ratio Histogram is proposed to address the issue. However it is rather computationally expensive. three methods are proposed in this paper. the first one takes the advantage of the lasting time of the illumination variation and the second one takes into consideration the regulation of the change of gray level of blocks in the consecutive images due to lighting condition variation. the last uses another illumination invariant metric to deal withthe problem. the effectiveness of the methods is validated by experiments on some real-world video sequences.

A much extended graph-based alternative wiring (GBAW) scheme to identify alternative wires in multilevel logic with promising results is presented. By modeling subsets of circuits as minimal graphs and applying purely graph-based local pattern search technique, we have found more than 40 graph patterns which contain alternative wires within 2-edge distance from the target wire. Applying proper grouping technique for the similar patterns, the complexity of our rewiring technique can be reduced. Experimental results on MCNC benchmarks show that our technique is much faster than the ATPG-based technique RAMBO with competitive number of alternative wires found. Withthis augmented pattern family of alternative wires, we are able to find 30% more alternative wires compared to RAMBO with75 times speedup on average. We applied GBAW in logic minimization as a perturbation engine and simplify the target circuit by SIS algebraic operations. Results show a further reduction of 11.1% in literal count compared to applying algebraic operations alone.

this article describes the use of gesture recognition techniques in computervision as a natural interface for video content navigation, and the design of a navigation and browsing system that caters to these natural means of computer-human interaction. For consumer applications, video content navigation presents two challenges: (1) how to parse and summarize multiple video streams in an intuitive and efficient manner, and (2) what type of interface will enhance the ease of use for video browsing and navigation in a living room setting or an interactive environment. In this paper, we address the issues and propose the techniques that combine video content navigation with gestures, seamlessly and intuitively, in an integrated system. the current framework can incorporate speech recognition technology. We present a new type of browser for browsing and navigating video content, as well as a gesture recognition interface for this browser.

An object recognition system has been developed that uses a new class of local image features. the features are invariant to image scaling, translation, and rotation, and partially invariant to illumination changes and affine or 3D projection. these features share similar properties with neurons in inferior temporal cortex that are used for object recognition in primate vision. Features are efficiently detected through a staged filtering approach that identifies stable points in scale space. Image keys are created that allow for local geometric deformations by representing blurred image gradients in multiple orientation planes and at multiple scales. the keys are used as input to a nearest-neighbor indexing method that identifies candidate object matches. Final verification of each match is achieved by finding a low-residual least-squares solution for the unknown model parameters. Experimental results show that robust object recognition can be achieved in cluttered partially-occluded images with a computation time of under 2 seconds.

Measures of scatter are used in statistical patternrecognition to identify and select important features, computed as linear combinations of the given features. Examples include principal components and linear discriminants. the classic computational procedures require eigenvector decomposition of large matrices, and in the case of images they are only practical for identifying a low dimensional feature sub-space. We investigate the case in which the selected features are required to be a subset of the given features. It is shown that the same scatter measures used in the general case can also be used in this discrete selection case, but the computational procedure no longer involves matrix eigenvector decomposition. Instead, the selection of pixels that optimize scatter measures can be accomplished by a very simple and efficient discrete optimization technique that runs in linear time regardless of the subspace size. Applications to clustering and content based indexing are discussed.

this paper presents a method for the automatic evaluation of the appearance of seam puckers (SP) on suits. Presently, evaluations are done by inspectors who compare standard photographs to test samples. We regard the evaluation as patternrecognition, using the fractal dimensions as the features of SP. the first difficult point of automatic evaluation is that the gray levels of SP are often confused withthe gray levels of material's texture. We solved the problem by distinguishing the SP from the texture using the concept of variance. For images containing SP we apply the contrast transform. By these processes, confusion is avoided. the second point is the calculation of fractal dimensions. In order to make it easy to calculate fractal dimensions, we make a curve representing the property of SP. From the curve fractal dimension is calculated. Twenty suits were used as test patterns for the evaluation experiment, and a good result was obtained. We also made an evaluation system using Daubechies' wavelet and compared it withthe present system. the evaluation results obtained by the system using the fractal dimensions showed a better result than that of the wavelet feature.
