In this paper we consider a mobile platform with two cameras directed towards the floor mounted the same distance from the ground, assuming planar motion and constant internal parameters. Earlier work related to this specific problem geometry has been carried out for monocular systems, and the main contribution of this paper is the generalization to a binocular system and the recovery of the relative translation and orientation between the cameras. the method is based on previous work on monocular systems, using sequences of inter-image homographies. Experiments are conducted using synthetic data, and the results demonstrate a robust method for determining the relative parameters.

Video compression algorithms have been designed aiming at pleasing human viewers, and are driven by video quality metrics that are designed to account for the capabilities of the human visual system. However, thanks to the advances in computer vision systems more and more videos are going to be watched by algorithms, e.g. implementing video surveillance systems or performing automatic video tagging. this paper describes an adaptive video coding approach for computer vision-based systems. We show how to control the quality of video compression so that automatic object detectors can still process the resulting video, improving their detection performance, by preserving the elements of the scene that are more likely to contain meaningful content. Our approach is based on computation of saliency maps exploiting a fast objectness measure. the computational efficiency of this approach makes it usable in a real-time video coding pipeline. Experiments show that our technique outperforms standard H.265 in speed and coding efficiency, and can be applied to different types of video domains, from surveillance to web videos.

Recognizing continuous human action is a fundamental task in many real-world computer vision applications including video surveillance, video retrieval, and human-computer interaction, etc. It requires to recognize each action performed as well as their segmentation boundaries in a continuous sequence. In previous works, great progress has been reported for single action recognition, by using deep convolutional networks. In order to further improve the performance for continuous action recognition, in this paper, we introduce a discriminative approach consisting of three modules. the first feature extraction module uses a two stream Convolutional Neural Network to capture the appearance and the short-term motion information from the raw video input. Based on the obtained features, the second classification module performs spatial and temporal recognition and then fuses the two scores from respective feature stream. In the final segmentation module, a semi-Markov Conditional Field model, capable of handling long-term action interactions, is built to partition the action sequence. As can be seen in the experimental results, our approach obtains state-of-the-art performance on public datasets including 50Salads, Breakfast, and MERL Shopping. We have also visualized the continuous actions segmentation results for more insightful discussion in the paper.

In many artificial intelligence, machine learning and computer vision tasks, the weighted sum model is used to value objects and define an order over them. In this paper, we consider two decision criteria defined as the (Euclidean and more generally Mahalanobis-like) distance to a reference point and investigate how they relate to the weighted sum model. In particular, we show that the distance-based representations can be seen as a relaxation of the representation induced by the weighted sum and we provide a characterization of the latter model with the former models in the case of strict orders. To illustrate our point, we consider the context of relative visual attributes. Nonetheless, our results also apply to other domains. More specifically, we present how these reference-point-based representations can be learned from pairwise comparisons and how they can be exploited for classification. Our experimental results show that those two criteria yield a more precise representation of the relative ordering for some attributes and that combining the best representations for each attribute improves recognition performance.

Visual place recognition is the task of recognizing the query image in a set of dataset images. It is a challenging problem in computer vision due to frequent and unpredictable environmental changes. In this paper, a novel approach is proposed for visual place recognition. We consider the problem of visual place recognition as a probabilistic voting problem on coherent image sequences. According to the co-visibility relationship of images in the dataset, each query can be represented by a categorical variable. therefore, the whole sequence is the distribution of several independent and non-identical categorical variables. Introducing the probabilistic framework not only removes the need for heuristic parameters but also recognizes location efficiently and effectively. Two widely used datasets are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. the probabilistic voting algorithm achieves superior performance compared with state-of-the-art methods and satisfies the real-time requirement.

Radial lens distortion often exists in images taken by commercial cameras, which does not satisfy the assumption of pinhole camera model. Eliminating the radial lens distortion of an image is necessary as a preprocessing step for many vision applications. Some paper has employed Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), to achieve radial distortion correction. they generated images with a large number of images of high variation of radial distortion, which can be well exploited by deep CNN with a high learning capacity, and reach the state-of-the-art results. In this paper, we claim that a weight layer with inverted foveal models can be added to these existing CNNs methods for radial distortion correction. In the widely used very deep Resnet-18 model, our method achieves about 20 percent decrease in the loss function with faster convergence compared to the previous methods.

Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have gained their reputation for the success in various tasks in computer vision, including salient objects detection. However, it remains a challenge that the CNNs have repeated downsample operators and always create low-resolution predictions, which tend to loss details and finer structure of images. To detect and segment the salient objects well, it is also necessary to merge high-level semantic information and low-level fine details simultaneously. thus, we propose a novel network structure with stage-wise refinement sub-structures. In addition, we exploit the essence of salient objects detection by encoding the global image context in a specifically designed module, which is applied to every stage of the refinement structure. So the coarse saliency map generated from the base CNN can be refined with low-level feature and global context information step-by-step. Experimental results have demonstrated that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches on four benchmark datasets.

Human action recognition in video is an active yet challenging research topic due to high variation and complexity of data. In this paper, a novel video based action recognition framework utilizing complementary cues is proposed to handle this complex problem. Inspired by the successful two stream networks for action classification, additional pose features are studied and fused to enhance understanding of human action in a more abstract and semantic way. Towards practices, not only ground truth poses but also noisy estimated poses are incorporated in the framework with our proposed pre-processing module. the whole framework and each cue are evaluated on varied benchmarking datasets as JHMDB, sub-JHMDB and Penn Action. Our results outperform state-of-the-art performance on these datasets and show the strength of complementary cues.

In this paper we introduce a new Connected Components Labeling (CCL) algorithm which exploits a novel approach to model decision problems as Directed Acyclic Graphs with a root, which will be called Directed Rooted Acyclic Graphs (DRAGs). this structure supports the use of sets of equivalent actions, as required by CCL, and optimally leverages these equivalences to reduce the number of nodes (decision points). the advantage of this representation is that a DRAG, differently from decision trees usually exploited by the state-of-the-art algorithms, will contain only the minimum number of nodes required to reach the leaf corresponding to a set of condition values. this combines the benefits of using binary decision trees with a reduction of the machine code size. Experiments show a consistent improvement of the execution time when the model is applied to CCL.

Since the authentic Fritillaria Cirrhosa D. Don resources are scarce due to its high price and valuable medical uses, it is difficult to meet the clinical needs. therefore, the problem of adulteration in the market is more and more serious. At present, the identification of Fritillaria mainly relies on traditional trait identification, microscopic identification, physical and chemical identification and other methods, which is subjective and requires high practical experience for operators, and the pretreatment work is cumbersome. In this paper, the concept of deep learning is introduced into the identification of Fritillaria for the first time. First, we have created the first multi-angle Fritillaria standard datasets, including Fritillaria Cirrhosa D. Don and Fritillary bulb. We then have proposed a novel deep learning framework SE-DPU to classify Fritillaria datasets, from which we can get the highest classification accuracy. the framework is a hybrid of Squeeze-and-Excitation block (SE unit), U-Net and Dual Path Network (DPN). It reuses the features and explores the new features adaptively recalibrates channel-wise feature responses obtains abundance features while training. Experimental results with Fritillaria Cirrhosa D. Don data have indicated that the proposed method have provided competitive performance. © 2019 IEEE.
