the ability to reengineer object-oriented legacy systems has become a vital matter in today's software industry. Early adopters of the object-oriented programming paradigm are now facing the problem of transforming their object-oriented "legacy" systems into full-fledged frameworks. To address this problem, a series of workshops has been organised to set up a forum for exchanging experiences, discussing solutions, and exploring new ideas. Typically, these workshops were organised as satellite events of major software engineering conferences, such as ecoop [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11] and ESEC/FSE [12,13,14] . During the past 10 years, participants of this workshop series have been actively contributing to the state-of-the-art on reengineering of object-oriented systems. this special 10 th anniversary edition was no exception and this report summarises the key discussions and outcome of that workshop. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

this paper describes the development of a class hierarchy to support distributed transaction processing. Inheritance and polymorphism, key features of the object oriented programming model, have been used to develop a hierarchy of classes which convey to their subclasses the behaviours of persistence, concurrency-control, recoverability and identity necessary for distributed transaction processing. the development is traced from the requirements of distributed transaction processing to the definition of classes supporting these key properties. the system is interesting in both its development and its results. the development, not based on any rigourous design methodology, illustrates some of the design decisions unique to object-oriented systems. the resulting class hierarchy provides a flexible, object-oriented interface for reliable distributed programming. the paper includes a step-by-step description of the design of the classes and the class hierarchy. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1992.

We have developed language support for the expression of multi-object coordination. In our language, coordination patterns can be specified abstractly, independent of the protocols needed to implement them. Coordination patterns are expressed in the form of constraints that restrict invocation of a group of objects. Constraints are defined in terms of the interface of the objects being invoked rather than their internal representation. Invocation constraints enforce properties, such as temporal ordering and atomicity, that hold when invoking objects in a group. A constraint can permanently control access to a group of objects, thereby expressing an inherent access restriction associated with the group. Furthermore, a constraint can temporarily enforce access restrictions during the activity of individual clients. In that way, constraints can express specialized access schemes required by a group of clients. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1993.

the interplay of multiple objects in object-oriented programming often follows specific protocols, for example certain orders of method calls and/or control structure constraints among them that are parts of the intended object usages. Unfortunately, the information is not always documented. that creates long learning curve, and importantly, leads to subtle problems due to the misuse of objects. In this paper, we propose GrouMiner, a novel graph-based approach for mining the usage patterns of one or multiple objects. GrouMiner appraoch includes a graph-based representation for multiple object usages, a pattern mining algorithm, and resilient to software changes. Our experiments on several real-world programs show that our prototype is able to find useful usage patterns with multiple objects and control structures, and to translate them into user-friendly code skeletons to assist developers in programming. It could also detect the usage anomalies that caused yet undiscovered defects and code smells in those programmes.

the depot model, developed at Carnegie Mellon University, provides a method for managing third-party and locally developed software. depot uses an object-oriented approach to managing software;each software package is managed as one or more logical objects. Yet, from the perspective of a user, the multiple "software objects" appear as a single, integrated, software environment. Local disk depot (ldd) is an extension to the depot framework. ldd facilitates the management of environments that "inherit" software from the "master" software environments. the inherited software environment is formed by taking software and configuration information from the master software environments, and integrating that with local software and configuration information. the most common use of ldd is to have an inherited environment on the local disk of a workstation. this allows the workstation administrator to locally cache software in order to improve performance and availability of critical software in the event of server or network failure. the inherited environments, however, can be used for more than saving local copies of remote software. Workstation administrators can introduce customizations to the software environment, as well as add additional software, even from other software environments. Developers can easily test new or updated applications on their own machines in an environment that is otherwise identical to the released environment. © Proceedings of the 7th conference on Systems Administration, LISA 1993. this paper presents a study aiming to analyse the design strategies of experts in object-oriented programming. We report an experiment conducted with four experts. Each subject solved three problems. Our results show that three strategies may be used in program design according to the solution structure. An object-centred strategy and a function-centred strategy are used when the solution has a hierarchical structure with vertical communication between objects. In this case, the plan which guides the design activity is declarative. A procedure-centred strategy is used when the solution has a flat structure with horizontal communication between objects. in this case, the plan which guides the design activity is procedural. these results are discussed in relation with results on design strategies in procedural design. Furthermore, our results provide insight into the knowledge structures of experts in object-oriented design. To conclude, we point out limitations of this study and discuss implications of our results for Human-Computer Interaction systems, in particular for systems assisting experts in their design activity.

As software evolves, data types have to be extended, possibly with new data variants or new operations. object-oriented design is well-known to support data extensions well. In fact, most popular books showcase data extensions to illustrate how objects adequately support software evolution. Conversely, operation extensions are typically better supported by a functional design. A large body of programming language research has been devoted to the challenge of properly supporting both kinds of extensions. While this challenge is well-known from a language design standpoint, it has not been studied empirically. We perform such a study on a large sample of Smalltalk projects (over half a billion lines of code) and their evolution over more than 100,000 committed changes. Our study of extensions during software evolution finds that extensions are indeed prevalent evolution tasks, and that both kinds of extensions are equally common in object-oriented software. We also discuss findings about the evolution of the kinds of extensions over time, and about the viability of the Visitor pattern as an object-oriented solution to operation extensions. this study suggests that object-oriented design alone is not sufficient, and that practical support for both kinds of program decomposition approaches are in fact needed, either by the programming language or by the development environment. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Automatic prefetching by traversal profiling in object persistence architectures

object persistence architectures support transparent access to persistent objects. For efficiency, many of these architectures support queries that can prefetch associated objects as part of the query result. While specifying prefetch manually in a query can significantly improve performance, correct prefetch specifications are difficult to determine and maintain, especially in modular programs. Incorrect prefetching is difficult to detect, because prefetch is only an optimization hint. this paper presents AUTOFETCH, a technique for automatically generating prefetch specifications using traversal profiling in object persistence architectures. AUTOFETCH generates prefetch specifications based on previous executions of similar queries. In contrast to previous work, AUTOFETCH can fetch arbitrary traversal patterns and can execute the optimal number of queries. AUTOFETCH has been implemented as an extension of Hibernate. We demonstrate that AUTOFETCH improves performance of traversais in the OO7 benchmark and can automatically predict prefetches that are equivalent to hand-coded queries, while supporting more modular program designs. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Architectural modeling using the Unified Modeling Language (UML) can support the development of concurrent applications, but the problem of mapping the model to a concurrent implementation remains. this paper defines a scheme to map concurrent UML designs to a concurrent object-oriented program. Using the COMET method for the architectural design of concurrent object-oriented systems, each component and connector is annotated with a stereotype indicating its behavioral design pattern. For each of these patterns, a reference implementation is provided using SCOOP, a concurrent object-oriented programming model. Given the strong execution guarantees of the SCOOP model, which is free of data races by construction, this development method eliminates a source of intricate concurrent programming errors. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.
