the main objective of this study is to create a method that can affect flavor perception, without changing the food itself, by applying thermal sensations to the skin around the nose to simulate skin temperature changes associated with pleasant and unpleasant feelings. Recent physiological research has demonstrated that skin temperature changes affect flavor perception. Based on the James-Lange theory, which claims that changes in bodily responses unconsciously evoke emotions and change our perception related to an emotional state, we hypothesized that flavor perception can be modified by affecting the skin temperature properly. To test this theory, we developed an "Affecting Tumbler," which presents thermal sensations to the skin around the nose for simulating the skin's temperature response during drinking. Our user study suggested that flavor richness and aftertaste strength were significantly improved by heating up the skin in the nasal region. these results indicate that flavor perception can be controlled with the proposed method. In this paper the heuristic algorithm for the selection lightpaths in flexible transparent optical networks has been presented. the considered problem of routing and spectrum assignment (RSA) takes into consideration minimizing the length of the transmission distance under spectrum continuity constraints and relationship between the traffic bitrates and the spectrum bandwidth. the proposed algorithm constitutes modification the well-known Dijkstra’s algorithm. the obtained results show that a significant reduction in the number of rejected requests can be achieved by an appropriate selection of the scheme spectrum segments in the aggregated spectrum of the path. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2014.

We propose a Bayesian probabilistic modeling of the semantic structures of HTML documents. We assume that HTML documents have logically hierarchical structures and model them as links between blocks. these links or dependency structures are estimated by sampling methods. We use hierarchical Bayesian modeling where each block is given labels such as "heading" or "contents", and words and layout features (i.e., symbols and HTML tags) are generated simultaneously, based on these labels. © 2014 Springer international Publishing.

this paper describes work on a framework for multi-agent research using low cost Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAV's). In the past this type of research has required significant investment for both the vehicles themselves and the infrastructure necessary to safely conduct experiments. We present an alternative solution using a robust, low cost, off the shelf platform. We demonstrate the capabilities of our system via two typical multi-robot tasks: obstacle avoidance and exploration. Developing multi-agent applications safely and quickly can be difficult using hardware alone, to address this we also present a multi-quadcopter simulation based around the Gazebo 3D simulator. © 2014 Springer international Publishing.

With the aim to simplify the electrical component structure of the present variable rate fertilizer applicator system, a kind of variable rate fertilizer applicator control system was developed. It is based on low voltage DC motor. the working voltage of this system is not higher than 12V DC, which can be supplied by the tractor’s storage battery directly. With the encoder measuring the motor speed, it could response the running state of the motor in real time. A kind of control model based on PID algorithm was built. With this model, the influence of load variation on the motor speed could reduce. As a result, the control accuracy of this system could be improved. Field experiment has been conducted using this system. Experiment showed that when the travel speed was 3.60km/h, the maximum fertilizer rate could be 850 kg/hm2. When the fertilizer rate was 200 ~ 600 kg/ hm2, the mean error of this system was 1.71% while the maximum error was 2.56%. © IFIP international Federation for Information Processing 2014.

Use a very important tool called ICEM CFD integrated in ANSYS Workbench to mesh the model of toss device and then apply the software FLUENT to simulate numerically and analyze the velocity distribution and pressure distribution, based on the RNG k-epsilon model. Numerical simulation results showed that air flow field and pressure distribution of toss device were asymmetry. Maximum wind speed of fan exit was 42.8 m/s, which met the actual needs. In a word, the design of toss device was reasonable. But there was the existence of the secondary flow in toss cylinder, making some gas couldn't flow smoothly, thus affecting delivery efficiency. through analysis of the stress field in the blower, the results showed that static pressure of windward side blade increased from roots to ends and flow channels between fan blades in different positions showed different static pressure characteristics. the maximum static pressure of windward side blade was 878 pa, the minimum static pressure of lee side blade just passing the export of fan was -950 pa, the negative pressure meaning suction. the conclusions provided a reference for structural optimization and performance improvement of the toss device of Yellow Corn Forage Harvester. © IFIP international Federation for Information Processing 2014.

In current e-learning studies, one of the main challenges is to keep learners motivated in performing desirable learning behaviours and achieving learning goals. Towards tackling this challenge, social e-learning contributes favourably, but it requires solutions that can reduce side effects, such as abusing social interaction tools for 'chitchat', and further enhance learner motivation. In this paper, we propose a set of contextual gamification strategies, which apply flow and self-determination theory for increasing intrinsic motivation in social e-learning environments. this paper also presents a social e-learning environment that applies these strategies, followed by a user case study, which indicates increased learners' perceived intrinsic motivation. © 2014 Springer international Publishing.

As for ASIFT, ASIFT has been proven to be invariant to image scaling and rotation. Specially, ASIFT enables matching of images with severe viewpoint change and outperforms significantly the state-of-the-art methods. It accomplished this by simulating several views of the original images. However, we found that the simulated parameters are continuous, namely, transformations acquired by ASIFT cant express the real relationship between reference and input images. therefore, a particle swarm optimization based sample strategy is presented in this paper. the basic idea is to search the best transform in continuous parameter space. Experimental results show that the proposed PSO-ASIFT algorithm could get more matches compared with the original ASIFT and SIFT. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

Serious games are gaining in popularity within a wide range of educational and training applications given their ability to engage and motivate learners in the educational process. Recent hardware and computational advancements are providing developers the opportunity to develop applications that employ a high level of fidelity (realism) and novel interaction techniques. However, despite these great advances in hardware and computational power, real-time high fidelity rendering of complex virtual environments (found in many serious games) across all modalities is still not feasible. Perceptual-based rendering exploits various aspects of the multi-modal perceptual system to reduce computational requirements without any resulting perceptual effects on the resulting scene. A series of human-based experiments demonstrated a potentially strong effect of sound on visual fidelity perception, and task performance. However, the resulting effects were subjective whereby the influence of sound was dependent on various individual factors including musical listening preferences. this suggests the importance of customizing (individualizing) a serious game's virtual environment with respect to audio-visual fidelity, background sounds, etc. In this paper details regarding this series of audio-visual experiments will be provided followed by a description of current work that is examining the customization of a serious game's virtual environment by each user through the use of a game-based calibration method. © 2014 Springer international Publishing.

With advances in medical technology, people's life have been extended, and there are more and more older adults isolated. If they do not maintain social life with others, they may feel loneliness and anxiety. For their mental health, it is reported effective to keep their social relationship with others, for example, the conversation with their caregivers or other elderly people. Active listening is a communication technique that the volunteer listener listens to the speaker (the elderly) carefully and attentively by confirming or asking for more details about what they heard. this helps to make the elderly feel cared and to relieve their anxiety and loneliness. this paper presents our in-progress project aiming to develop a framework of a virtual companion agent who is always with the user and can engage active listening to maintain a long-term relationship with elderly users. In order to achieve the agent's companionship with the user for a longer period, we believe that it is essential to make the agent to understand the user as best as it can. this kind of user-fitted conversation is not addressed in previous companion agent work. the proposed approach is the acquisition of the "memory" of the user's daily life in two situations, at-home and outside-home. In the former one, multiple Microsoft Kinect depth sensors were adopted. the depth information is integrated to detect the user's position and posture and then to estimate the user's daily activity. In the outside-home configuration, the prototype application is an Android smartphone application that recognizes the user's moving status with the information from the on-board three-axis accelerometer as well as the location of the user from GPS information. these data are then used to estimate the user's outside-home activity.
