Defining computer based tests which can be analyzed automatically in order to generate feedback for the learner can either be realized by specialized programs, e.g. in CAS systems for mathematical domains, or on the other hand be based on closed questions as in multiple choice or fill-in. this article introduces a framework with abstractions for a sequence of test procedures so that instantiations can easily be adapted for various domains and still be specific concerning the types of tests and feedback generated. Since not all types of tasks can be evaluated automatically, the framework integrates components for human intervention (tutor-in-the-loop concept).

Internet-based assessment has been recently introduced into many courses taught at Silesian University of technology, Gliwice, Poland. We have started with summative assessment (examination) and non-obligatory formative assessment. the next step was the implementation of obligatory formative assessment for some groups of students. In the paper the applied forms of formative assessment are thoroughly described. We present the method, obtained results, and students attitude to different forms of assessment. Students have been surveyed on various aspects of web-based assessment - in particular, on the methods of cheating. We discuss the range of cheating, ways of cheating and precautions to be taken. the authors' experience and findings may be helpful for teachers applying Internet for students' assessment.

Currently the content-centric view on eLearning is extended by didactical and pedagogical aspects. the formalization and modeling of didactical processes gains more and more interest. this development is reflected in the courseware modeling tool eduWEAVER. It supports instructors in the design, the re-use, and the adaptation of new and existing courses independently from existing learning platforms. What makes eduWEAVER unique among courseware tools is its ability to structure didactical learning scenarios in graphical knowledge models. this paper illustrates the benefits, eduWEAVER offers to contents auditors of academic programs as well as to instructors.

this paper presents work assessing the organisational acceptability of a distributed learning resources repository catalogue for computer Based Assessment (CBA) resources as part of the University of Bedfordshire Educational Resource Network (UBERN). We employ semi-structured interviews with institutional members having different management functions and responsibilities for CBA strategy and implementation. these are triangulated with issues regarding quality of use, pedagogical effectiveness and acceptability for endusers from previous work on the East of England Resource Network (EERN) project funded by JISC. this highlights a range of significant issues that need to be addressed both inside and outside an organisation implementing a repository or a catalogue for distributed repositories, with particular reference to CBAs.

this paper describes how to realize effective knowledge construction from the web, focusing on multi-perspective thinking and a copy-and-paste problem in a writing assignment. Our fundamental idea is to provide students with an e-notebook tool. this tool enables a student to construct knowledge by thinking about and externalizing (visualizing) the content of his/her visited web pages and creating his/her e-notebook. In order to prevent noneffective knowledge construction by copy-and-paste, this tool forbids to copy and paste the content and always stores the e-notebook file on not his/her client computer but his/her personal space in the LMS.

computer-based assessment is a critical part of any Webbased as well as many more traditional educational programs. While some research studies have established equivalence between computer-Based Tests (CBTs) and traditional Paper-and-Pencil (PNP) tests, most have not considered language as a variable. It is essential to evaluate computer-Based Tests (CBTs), especially for populations such as those from other countries, cultures, or language groups. Such populations may not have the same exposure to or level of familiarity withcomputers and computer-based training and assessment. the current empirical study seeks to determine whether test modalities are equivalent for nonnative speakers of English taking an English proficiency examination. this study tested 57 university students taking English as a Second Language. Half were given an English proficiency test in a Web-based format in a computer lab and the other half were given the same test in pencil-andpaper format in a standard classroom. the study confirmed equivalence between CBT and traditional PNP versions of the test for the sample.

Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is a computer-based online learning environment, which provides opportunities for geographically distributed student to learn at the time and location of their choosing. Especially the Web3D VLE can bring us more rich learning experience as well as the information overload and low adaptive for the huge of 3D data. In this paper, we propose prototype of adaptive Web3D VLE with interest management supported, named VLE-IM. VLE-IM provides the interest management methodology with correlation analysis, the description of the correlation interest scheme using digraph. System can filter the update message and network traffic using Web3D Level-of-Detail(LOD) control based on Xj3D and Java programming language. JXTA technology based architecture can accommodate prototype system with centralized/decentralized mode and high scalability. Incorporated withthese approach, VLE-IM meets the request of adaptive Web3D VLE. Besides;some development issues are address in this paper.

In this paper, we describe a prototype of an multimedia guide system that use instant infrared communication to get the multimedia contents and play the contents based on the operation of the users. the portable guide device is conposed of an infrared window, an OLED screen, an input cross key and a headphone. Because the user can operate the guide device based on his or her needs, the system can provide a semi-interactive function with a very low cost. Here the guide contents are delivered through an instant infrared communication, which will not be affected by the number of users, can provide different delivering area in a exhibition hall. the radio wave can not provide such service. With an RTOS embedded system, we have developed the prototype of the system, and made a demostration to the visitors in a local science museum in Japan. Based on the annketo, more than 80 persent visitors satisfied withthe service provided by the new device and system.

the paper presents two schemes to identify the best combination of events that maximize (minimize) the probability of a target node in a Bayesian network (BN). One scheme is based on evolutionary algorithms (EA) while the other is a heuristic approach, named Sets of Actions Finder (SAF). the heuristic approach is similar to the hill-climbing search technique and works in polynomial time. Both SAF and EA are applied over hundreds of Bayesian networks and the results are compared withthe ones obtained through exhaustive searches. the results show that both SAF and EA perform quite similarly but the time taken by SAF is smaller compared to EA.

Much research has been performed on how computerbased technologies might facilitate awareness among cooperating actors. However, existing approaches in providing awareness services prove to be inadequate in data-intensive situations. Moreover, they fail to address the needs of dynamic, web-based communities. In this context, this paper presents a list of awareness mechanisms that have been integrated in an innovative web-based collaboration support tool, the ultimate aim being to satisfy the requirements associated to the above remarks. the proposed mechanisms are described and elaborated with respect to various awareness types reported in the literature.
